Hitting 32F on March 18 was adding insult to injury. My own sensor low reading was 29.7F in December.

Because I'm not pushing the limits I had almost no damage. Roystonea borinquena (1 gallon) bit the dust, and that's about it. Dypsis pembana and Hyophorbe indica look fine.

Terry, I decided to post my lows for the same days you were in the 30's to show the range of climates here in SoCal. I even converted my temperatures to F... The number on the left is you low and the number on the right is my low in El Sereno.

The average difference in our lows was 11.6F, more than one USDA zone. The smallest difference was 3F on Jan 31 and the biggest difference was 22F on Feb 9.

After 2 weeks of mild weather in March, my lows have slid down to 40F min, for this week. At the end of March, it's 41F this morning. I expect the danger of frost is past, but our N. Calif. springs can be chilly and it seems like it takes forever for warm weather to arrive.

My low last year was 23.5F and I suffered some frond damage. This year the low was 25.5F but with many mornings in the upper 20's, and no detectable frond damage on any of my palms. Dec through March has been below average.

Most of my Trachycarpus, Chamaerops, and Livistonas (decora and australis) are blooming or pushing out bloom spathes and the cannas are beginning to grow. Roses are in full bud and should start blooming next week. Most of my other palms are still asleep and won't start growing until the night temps. remain above 50F.

QUOTE
Very few truly Tropical specimens photosynthesize below 50 degreesF.This leads ultimately to the death of the specimen.Simply stated, it remains dormant too long and expires because of what amounts to starvation. This is the case even if the temperature does not drop below freezing.

bubba,

this makes great sense and is likely a big factor in the deaths of many W bifircata foxtails in Northern Ca.

They look ok after massive freezes but are dead by April.
