Site not banned!
by Geoff- 13 replies
- 2.1k views
Interestingly, I work for a corporation that has internet at work, but most of the interesting sites are blocked from our viewing (eg, Facebook, You Tube etc.). Until you (Dean) updated this site this last 24 hours, it was banned from my work and I could never get onto the forum page. Now it's not. Not sure what you did, but either in its new form it is under the radar, or our company finds it more palatable now. Thanks!!

Site problems

Just a heads up, I've noticed the site has been down intermittently over the past couple days. I didn't grab a screenshot, but it is saying there's a "500 error". The text below that suggests the mysql isn't able to locate the db... If there's an error log you might want to check it out to see what's going on.

Is it just me or has the forum skin disappeared. I've still got the nice buttons for search/member/?? Help Faq at the top but the forum and thread header/footer are just a plain band of blue and it has changed to a monotype font.

Size of photo attachments

Hi Dean, I have recently been experimenting with compressing photos to fit the 112640 byte limit. I feel that uploading photos directly to the forum server may be better than using iffy photo hosting services that may go out of business at any time resulting in a 1000's of broken links to photos making most of my posts less than useful. I think this forum should be able to stand the test of time and not be subject to such failures. However, I have found the 112640 byte limit to be very restrictive to posting at the quality that I am accostomed to by using photo hosting services. Is there any way that this limit can be raised using this current forum software ??? Incide…

I am unable to edit my posts. I receive the following message. "Sorry, you do not have permission to edit that message You are currently logged in as Dypsisdean" which is the name under which I posted. Am I missing something? I have edited before without problems. Well, I just checked and was able to edit this post. Apparently it only happens in the Palm Discussion.

Spell check not working on Firefox + Mac OSX
by Mauna Kea Cloudforest- 1 follower

Dean, I don't know how much control you have over what goes on with ip.board, and if you can do some HTML/JavaScript tweaking, but the CK editor used by the board is improperly implemented for Firefox on OSX. The CK Editor plugin that ip.board uses requires a declaration "config.disableNativeSpellChecker = false" otherwise the native editor in Mac OSX that firefox leverages won't work. That needs to be in the config file for the editor. See http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13336998/how-to-make-spell-checker-work-for-ckeditor-wysiwyg-editor, it spells out how to fix the problem.

This post is simply a suggestion for the site. I am an amateur (home grower) that monitors the for sale/trade category, and one of the things I find annoying is that someone selling a palm will specify local pickup only. Of course, that's quite reasonable from their perspective, but not really an option for me unless that person is located in northern california (unfortunately for me, 99.8% of these posts are in any one of a number of southern california communities, any one of a number of florida communities or texas) - as a practical matter, these communities are not accessible to each other as well - the problem then gets exacerbated when a grower (typically commerci…

Suggestion

With all of the discussion, photos, etc. regarding the Darian event, it maight be a good idea to consolidate them into its own subforum...at least for a while. This looks as big or bigger than reporint on a biennial...... just an idea....it will also prevent off thread commentary in the Discussing Palms subforum, of which I am already guilty......

First let me apologize for posting this thread here. For some unknown reason, I cannot post in the Administrative section. Perhaps the MODS could assist in the moving of this thread. Suggestion: Could we possibly get a feature, say adjacent to the IPS logo that could convert Celsius to Fahrenheit and vice-versa. Often when I am reading a post and Celsius is used, I am kinda in the dark as to the accurate temperture. What do the members think of the suggestion?

Suggestion on images
by RedRabbit- 19 replies
- 1.5k views
I suggest removing images from quotes. When you reply to someone the images really aren’t needed and just provide redundant content. The problem is they can significantly lengthen the page and slow down the load time. Instead of removing images outright, another good option would be giving them some sort of text placeholder. That should be sufficient to avoid any confusion and improve the user’s experience.

This is the worst in living memory and I hope you havnt been hit too bad. Esp if you are in the nursery trade or farming (Nigel scores twice here (ouch!) I was badly flooded once but not quite all the garden and I tried to take away something positive which is I now know for certain my gardens levels. I Also got our Council engineers to clear our drainage ditch of detritus and th deepen and widen it. So this time no flooding. Anway things could be worse ; apart from 2 million plus pounds of damage and some minor damage only two guys have lost their lives. It could have been worse and more is forecast soon. Apparently this weather "should" have gone to Iceland but we …

Tagging feature for photos?
by Kim- 9 replies
- 1.6k views
On certain popular websites, you can "tag" a photo by clicking on a point, and a bar will pop up where a name can be inserted. After tagging is complete, you can mouse over the photo, and the names will appear; remove the mouse and they disappear again. Wouldn't that be a superb tool for "tagging" the various palms in garden photos? Is that a possible add-on to this site, Mr. Palm Mod?

Guys I will try to borrow another system in the next week or two. My main phone line still works but thats about it. Main cable at the local exchange is being repaired and the guys have already repaired my personal phone line so in an emergency such as ("my palm is growing toooo fast; what do I do?")* members can find my number in the IPS Directory. Regardez Juan * send it to me!
