canariensis Pineapples in planters
by Palm Sundae- 5 replies
I'm getting ready to transplant a couple P. canariensis from 11"d x 12"h nursery pots into standard size planters. Either 17"d x 15"h with 11"d base or 20"d x 17.5"h with 12"d base. Could use some input on a couple of things. One, the drain hole(s) are pretty small compared to nursery pots. Should this concern me? Change my watering habits? Drill more holes? I'm worried that a couple of small holes will just get plugged up over time. Two, is there any reason not to go directly to the larger size planter? My only real concern here is the diameter and what that will do to the drainage since the soil will hold a lot more water than I am used to. The general …

I heard the palm fiend mentioned he had some soil mixes with silica sand. Which is pool filter sand. Any one else have any luck with it. Or use it solely for any palms?

I have a few Chamaedorea tepejilote and Chamaedorea radicalis seedlings and I’m concerned about the leaf colors (yellow rad, very deep green tep). The first picture shows what I think are one rad and two tep. The second picture I think are all rad. The top seedlings are sitting against a north wall and should get basically no direct sun; the bottom palms may get some filtered sun in the afternoon (based on this photo, more than I intended!), and some direct sun in the evening. Does this look like a light issue or a nutrient issue? They’re in pure coco coir and I have not been fertilizing until very recently... but I know the Texas sun is a lot for these palms…

Nursery pot sizes
by miamicuse- 7 replies

I have an exceedingly stupid question but it's a bit embarrassing to be asking. I buy 1 gallon water bottles and clearly a one gallon bottle is bigger than a 1 gallon nursery pot. I buy 5 gallon paint that comes in a bucket that is clearly bigger than a 5 gallon nursery pot. Why is that? Is there a reason? May be there are different gallons kind of like imperial tons and metric tons?

Overwatered?
by Pashgon- 1 follower

I have had this lady palm for over a year now and then all of a sudden it started looking terrible. I was suspicious it was overwatered so I repotted it, the bottom dirt was extremely soggy which seems to confirm my suspicions. I repotted with a cactus mix and added vermiculite and perlite, and trimmed most of the dead/really poor looking fronds. But now it’s so sad looking! I left some of the rougher stuff on just because I couldn’t bare to cut it down that much. Have I done the right things? Does it just need time? This palm is very special to me and I want it looking happy again!

Kentia palms (Howea forsteriana) in Orlando Fl airport

Delighted to see the airport using potted kentia palms in their interior decor. I’ve noticed that so many places resort to the easy to find and less expensive indoor palms (which seem even less adapted to indoor environments). Sophisticated and beautiful Howeas; they elevate the atmosphere in any location.

tomentum
by SALOttawa- 12 replies

Has anyone in this group heard of tomentum? I am getting a white sticky substance on some of my palms. I have had this issue in the past as well. I had always assumed it was a fungus. However, I cam across a post on Facebook where someone had an issue with a similar substance. Someone else commented and claimed it was tomentum. They claim it is normal and not harmful. I tried to do a bit of research. I did not find a great deal of information about it, but I have always treated it as a fungus by cleaning it off and then spraying with copper fungicide. It usually occurs on my TFs but I have also had problems with it on some dracaneas. When it is present, the plant always a…

How frequently do you fertilize your palms?
by Palmistry- 3 replies

I had a palm that was showing signs of potassium deficiency so I got sulpomag and mixed a teaspoon of it in and then watered it the next day. It worked great and my palm is looking happier!!!! How often should I fertilize my palm? I am thinking of every 6 weeks or so, but wanted to get a sense of everyone’s pace.

I feel like buying a couple/few more palms. After a talk with Phil, I think I should relegate my C. Benezeii to Office Squad after repotting. It's trunking and perpetually flowering, but it's basically a turnstile into my apartment and any other spot on my patio will cook it. I'd like to replace it with something shade loving that'll go more vertical and less horizontal. Also looking for anything that will grow in super low light, and please don't say Kentia because I've killed tons of them. I'm guessing some kind of chamaedorea, and my YouTube channel shows what I've already got growing. Looking to add something that will grow outdoors in mostly shade, …

Hedyscepe Canterburyana as a Houseplant!
by ZPalms- 1 follower

Back in September, I was looking for a palm that would work best as a houseplant, and on September 25, 2023, @Darold Petty messaged me asking if I would like to experiment with a Hedyscepe as a houseplant. And of course, I said yes because that would make such a unique and fun experiment, and I'm really grateful to have a chance to try one of these. Not too long after, it arrived, and I was able to pop it into a clear plastic cup so I could see the roots develop, which Darold already had sprouted when he sent it to me with a tiny sprout on it. I didn't change anything for this palm, and I didn't give it any special lighting other than what it gets from the window. Th…

Dumb Lighting Question/Palm Recommendations

So, I have a largeish south facing window in my office. I'm sure the glass has at least some degree of UV protection since the building was built in 2018. There is no shade. Would this be considered full sun? Also open to suggestions on seedlings I could stick in the window. I've got some year or so old A. Tuckerii seedlings that have been on my patio I could bring to work, but I'd like to fill the windowsill. I cooked some d. Lutescens and an Aloe Vera just to give y'all an idea of how much sun this window gets. Currently battling sugar ants and their accompanying aphids too, based on all the little tiny sticky specks I see on everything other than the snake…

Maybe they aren't even visitors, perhaps they live there! So I found this little gray tree frog hanging out in one of our sagos (Yes it's not a palm) I thought he was cool and snapped a pic. So if you have cool visitors to your pots lizards, birds, spiders etc. Let's see em!

Seedling setback
by Frond-friend42- 3 replies

My Chrysalidocarpus (dypsis) leucomalla was doing so well. I learned early on it doesn't like any extra water but I think I still hurt it by watering it to soon and it's having a tough time recovering. I moved it to a spot where I think it gets more indirect light but less from the south. Before injury (I think from watering early) and after:

Lady palm leaves stiff and not opening

Hello! I got a new lady palm about a month ago, and it seems the leaves have progressively grown very stiff and not opening. It is in a very well lit room without any direct sun rays and i test it’s soil for moisture regularly and watering every 10 days or so as it’s still not too hot or cold here in Victoria Australia. What is going on with my palm mate!? See photos

So I am germinating some S. Mexicana, and I don't know why but I pulled the seed out to see how much the root grew, (I have multiple others, I just wanted to see) and the very tippy top of the root snapped. Can It grow back? I really hope so. I have never had a root snap.

Phoenix roebellini in a sump bath

Hey everyone here is my two pots of Pygmy dates. One pot has 4 one has 3. Anyways just to show what I do for my indoor winter setup up here in 43 degrees north southern Ontario I put my potted palms over my sump pit and water the heck out of them and not worried about making a mess in a bathroom or clean up. The pump sucks up everything just about. One thing to note and I’ve said it before Pygmys are bulletproof up here. They don’t mind moist roots they survive just fine and grow like weeds for me indoors with no issues

Just an FYI for people who use bark in their mixes, I just got 24qt bags of Repti Bark for $7.69 per bag at Petco. I think it's a mistake on the website but the store honored it even though they were still ringing up $28.99 in store.
