Kentia palms. Are they really good indoor palms? 1 2

Ok, have done searches both here in forums and online. Kentia palms (both species) are usually mentioned as one of the top 5 indoor palms to have. I have a "3 try rule" with palms and will throw in the towel after that but that generally is on species that have little known about them as indoor palms. Kentia palms are gorgeous but crazy expensive to buy here in Nebraska. I'm lucky in that even mail order or when I make road trips to California they are a dime a dozen and pretty cheap to buy. I have tried at least 10? times of various sizes. Some single, others 3/4 in a pot. When left outside in dappled light here in the summer they get very ample rain and…

Beccariophoenix alfredii
by Kai- 31 replies

Hi all, Just felt like showing my newest aquisition; a Beccariophoenix alfredii. I have never seen one this size for sale in the Netherlands and just couldn't resist! I was participating in a locally organized exotic plant fair and decided to take a stroll along all the stands before the opening of the fair. I immediately noticed the coconutty appearance and went straight for it. Very quickly I secured this palm for 45 euro's which is a bargain in these parts of Europe. The palm came from a grower in southern Europe somewhere and as I have seen before with palms from those regions, it's in some kind of dense clayish (very heavy) soil. I plan on r…

SAGO fronds curling

Hi. I realize that a Sago is not a true palm, but I'm hoping someone has experienced this. Several (not all) of the fronds are curling at the ends.....its not throughout the plant and only on one side. I would appreciate any advice. I've attached some pics to give some clarity to the curling. FYI, I'm growing 8 palm varieties grow beds (not pots), in an all season greenhouse; in a soil mix of 50% topsoil, 20% peat, 20% compost, 10% perlite; with drip irrigation. Many thanks dave

Help with an unhappy pygmy date palm
by AdamT- 2 followers

Hi everybody, I’m new to the forum but was hoping with your expertise you might be able to shed some light on what’s going on with an unhappy pygmy date palm. For the last several weeks, the lower fronds have been progressively yellowing starting at the tips of the leaflets and moving inwards, and then progressing to brown, again starting at the tips and progressing inward until the whole frond dies. You can see what I mean in the photos below. Is this pattern a tell-tale sign of anything? My usual assumption is that I’m either overwatering or underwatering, though in my experience it usually seems to be much easier to overwater. I typically water every week…

I tried twice to grow from seed Cyrtostachys Renda and Areca Vestiaria Maroon. They germinated very well. They grew very well for about 5 months. Then, they started to get burned tips (especially C. Renda) and spots on leaf (especially A. Vestiaria) and little by little, all of them died. Each try, same result. I suspect that I did something wrong with the soil. Everybody told me to increase humidity, I did it and they died faster. I repeat, died faster. Areca is definitely a faster grower than C. Renda and in my opinion, it looks better. I would like to try again to grow them from seed. What soil would you use for these species? Thanks. Cyrtostachys Renda …

Pygmy Date Palm Soil and Care
by Dartolution- 28 replies
- 4.1k views
Hey guys, I had several pygmy date palms for years, until one year I forgot to take them in and it dropped down to 12F and frozen them all to the core. (Zone 7b) I lost 5-6 yr old palms. It sucked as you can imagine. I had 2 large pots in particular that had 3 trees per pot. Each tree had 1-2 ft of trunk on it. So this year Ive re-landscaped my entire property, and planted mediterranean fan palms in my back yard (zone 8a). I also have 2 sago cycads on my patio I plant to overwinter in the house. I wanted to get a 3 trunk pygmy date palm from lowes or HD and pot it up on the patio as well. Does anyone have any advice with t…

Howea belmoreana indoors/potted
by sashaeffer- 25 replies

Love these palms but have the worst luck with them as well as it's cousin the Kentia palm Curious if anyone here has kept a Belmoreana indoors with success and what care as far as watering culture yours had. One of the fronds of this one has slowly started to turn brown starting from the tip and working it's way back. Frond doesn't feel "dry" Palm hasn't been misted and it's in the pot and soil it grew up in, I only painted it. When inside for the winter, it's been sitting in front or close to a east facing window with little direct light, but some. As you can see the newest frond is nice and green and it's pushing a main new spear with another one…

tall pots for seedlings

I have seen some members here grow their palm seedlings in a tall pot, I am guessing 4"X4" square pots? These pots fit nicely together in a compact arrangement may be 4 to 6 in a row that fit snug in a rectangular tray. Do those come in a set? Like 24 pots + 1 tray? I tried googling for them but couldn't find them, I probably didn't use the proper keywords. Anyone care to steer me in the right direction or a place to get these at good prices?

Majesty Palm Outdoors in Zone 8b Questions
by Pee Dee Palms- 1 follower

I recently purchased a Majesty Palm from Lowe's and am planning to have it outside only during the spring and summer months here in Myrtle Beach. First off, I am not sure really where to put it. Some sources I see are saying that they like a lot of sunlight and others are saying that they like more shade, so I'm not really sure. I've got one area that I think could be a pretty good contender, I've attached pictures of this area. It is a south facing area with a very good bit of protection from wind. I'd say it gets no sun from sunrise to about 1 or 1:30 in the afternoon, but then it gets full sun from then on until sunset (it isn't on the south side of the house, but it i…

Joey Palm (Johannesteijsmannia altifrons) as a houseplant

I am pleasantly surprised with the progress of my potted Joey palm (Johannesteijsmannia altifrons). The first picture is when I first purchased in April 2017. The second picture is 18 months later - October 2018. It really enjoys the summers outdoors in New England; it is a surprisingly low maintenance houseplant during the cold months. My infatuation with internet photos of the Joey palm lead me to discover the Palm Talk forum in 2017. Forum threads on the cultural needs and member photos of successful container culture etc encouraged me to attempt growing a Joey in my cold winter climate. I have been growing Kentias indoors for over 20 years and I treat the Joe…

Width or Depth?
by GMann- 1 follower

What is more important for palms? The pot width or pot depth? For palms that sucker, does planting them in a wider pot encourage more suckering? I noticed that most containers for sale have slightly more width than depth (i.e. 20x17 or 13x10). Are those good dimensions for palms? There are a few though that are the opposite, i.e. tall pots that have more depth than width, how would a palm do in a pot like that? If you want to encourage palm height and trunking, do you need more depth or width?

Chamaerops as Bonsai
by Pal Meir- 1 follower

I think Chamaerops are the palms that are most suited to bonsai because they don’t mind root pruning, can survive longer draughts and become over 100 years old. I can present two examples which have suffered longer draughts, one has also survived the last German winter 2015/16 all time outdoors. The older palm was grown up in 1986 from a seed of a Sicilian palm (Palermo). The first pic was taken in 2003 when the palm was 17 years old, the second pic is taken today, now 30 years old. The yellowing of the fronds was caused by longer frosts during last winter. The younger palm (var. argentea = cerifera), grown up from RPS seed in 2003 and till 2015 in a small …

Big Chamaedorea Elegans
by David_Sweden- 7 replies

How come these two specimens look so different? Both are around 100cm incl pot: The left one I think is attractive because of how it's lushfully gushing out of the pot, creating its own little jungle. The right one is more elegant and equally pretty I think. Can't decide which one I like most. My best guess is that the left one has had light from all directions and the right one only from the ceiling, perhaps crowded by 100 other ones like it at the sides. But that's just me guessing. And sometimes when I compare bought palms with home grown ones I get the feeling the growers might have some tricks to make them stretch. I mean look at them, most people wouldn…

Licuala Peltata indoors in New York help needed
by Strangeinternet- 1 follower

Hey all, I got my first Peltata two weeks ago from a Florida nursery..about 36" tall and 4 fans/spears. I'm in New York City and trying to figure out to the best indoor care strategy especially re: light. I'm not letting the soil dry out and misting 2x a day which seems straightforward but as for light I've seen a lot of conflicting notes. It's an understory palm that needs shade outdoors but it seemed dangerous to treat it like a low-light indoors plant. Looking for some experienced advice on lighting. Right now, I have it about 3" ft from a southern facing window that gets about 5 hours of full sun this time of year but I can raise or lower a solar shade on. I…

Grow palms in pot outdoor!

I have few palms in pot but I keep outdoor... anyone has any experience doing that? differences compare to the one in pots indoor? I have few which I put in yard under shade cloth and I have few I grow on mu deck . My main question about that is that the rood of the deck has a plastic so it is not 100% shade nor 100% direct sun!! what should I consider this situation? if palms that not keep up with full sun can be put on my deck? or not that is direct sun anyway ?

Geonoma macrostachys 1 2

I recently purchased 30 Geonoma macrostachys seeds from RPS that were pre-germinated and ended up receiving 35. To me, this one of the prettiest Geonomas so i thought i’d give it a try. As most of them had already pushed a first leaf, i decided to pot them up in 0,25l containers with a 70/30 mixture of fine pine bark (2-8mm) and Seramis. Perhaps it might have been better to wait, as a couple of them seem to think about dampening off already. In retrospect i would have preferred germinating them in individual pots and thus avoiding transplanting them at this size. I use Saprol as a fungicide at the moment as i it’s available locally, but am interested in other options. …

Repotting Johannesteijsmannia altifrons
by maxum2610- 1 follower

I bought this Joey palm in Spain this summer (the one next to it with one leaf is a J. Magnifica). The brown tipping was there when I bought it, probably due to too much water. They were standing in water at the nursery. It's been growing slowly but steadily, and is just starting to push up a new leaf. The problem as you can see from the pics, is that the roots are growing really fast and have now started to shoot through the bottom. So the question is, does anyone have experience or pointers on how to repot a Joey and what soil mix is best suited. Right now the soil mix seems to be red Spanish clay with some peat and compost added. This mix drains like nothing I've seen …

I have tortured this seed for years now. 1 2

I grew this Lyto Weddell with a couple of others from Sydney grown seed, a few years ago. The others died after one or two leaves emerged, of rot. They were too wet, the potting mix was cheap and did not drain well enough. So, over a year ago I repotted this one into a very fast draining premium potting mix. (No, not fine bark 2, seramis 1) and it has not changed. So apart from insufficient drainage, what else would cause this? I have looked really hard for insect type pests, and have not found any. And the roots look good too. I was just going to give it away when it looked good, we have three other big ones in the ground doing well, …

Potting Mix

Has anyone had success growing palms in a chunky aroid mix or super chunky epiphyte soil such as used for hoya? I am wondering if sandy loam is absolutely necessary. I am looking to get a Kentia Palm. I have not had luck repotting palms in regular houseplant soil even with sufficient perlite so I think the extra oxygen chunky barky mix could possibly work. We don't have many supplies for palm trees such as sand in my local plant shop and I don't want to buy something like MiracleGro.
