Dypsis plumosa -- sprouting seeds 1 2

Howdyall, spring is coming soon hip hip hooray! And, my thoughts turn to lust - palm lust. Some of you may have received some free Dypsis plumosa seed I sent a while back. I kept a few, threw them in a pot and they germinated. Here's one of the babies in my hairy, average size man's mitt. Note the long root, that dives straight down, then jogs a bit where it hit the bottom of the pot. Handle them with care, don't break that root and don't knock the seed off the plant. They don't always die when that happens, but it sets them back. So, I hope some of you have gotten some of yours to sprout! Konstantin, how are yours over there in Greece? I know I sent o…

Is this a Chamaedorea Elegans "Bella"? 1 2

Hello everyone! Today while at a local department store I was browsing around the Garden section and I spotted a couple tiny little palms. I instantly thought "Could this be a Chamaedorea Elegans "Bella")? But, I wasn't sure and I'm still not entirely sure of what it is. Right then and there in the store I got on my phone and undertook a bit of "research" and looked up pictures of C. Elegans and compared them, I visited the growers website, scanned the UPC code, and etc. The specimens for sale don't provide any information on their sales tags as to what they are. The grower doesn't provide any real information on them either and only refers to them as "Foilage", which doe…

Older Chamaedorea Elegans needs help (air layering?)

Hello everyone. It's been a while since I have been here. Glad to be back. I have an older C. Elegans that is in. Ed of some help. I'm not sure if it's age but I'm guessing at least 10-12 years old if not older? I've had it since 2009. I can't remember where I got it but I suspect it may have been through someone selling here. Anyway it is about 2&1/2 to 3 feet tall. It's been though, ans survived a lot including a few moves, very low light condition at one point, and having all of its leaves burnt off by being left outdoors in direct sun. It's recently had a severe newly bug infestation which took months to get rid of but now after applying a systemi…

Grow lights - picture/discussion thread

Hey guys! I thought it would be cool to start a thread of grow light setups as well as just people's cool/creative indoor palm arrangements. I've installed a number of different grow lights in my place and wanted to share with you guys as well as just get a thread of pictures and discussion about what has/hasn't worked for us. I always love seeing what people do with their indoor space! Here's a list of the grow lights I've used: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1UAJP4JW5RVS8?ref_=wl_share The 75W Bozily ones are the most effective as far as par value, those are the main ones that I use everywhere. The other ones are less powerful but add a really nice ambi…

Majesty palm issues

Hello all!! I acquired this majesty palm (not 100% sure of name) from my mother in law about a year ago. At her house, it only ever had 4 fronds. I brought it back to my house and started taking care of it. It started drying out pretty quick. We have forced air heat and my MIL did not. About four months ago, I started doing some research into how to make it more healthy. I went on some of my fb groups and a person helped me with what I could fertilize it with. He recommended chelated iron 6-0-0. I have used it twice bit very little as I was afraid of burning the plant. I purchased a humidifier about a week ago and placed it near the palm tree. I spray it with water twice …

Who Grows Larger Sabal minor In Pots?
by PalmTreeDude- 15 replies

Who here grows larger (as in older) Sabal minor in pots? How is their growth rate? I might put a bunch in pots because I may end up moving (locally) and it would suck if I planted a bunch in the ground just to leave them in the next year.

Majesty Palm Outdoors in Zone 8b Questions

I recently purchased a Majesty Palm from Lowe's and am planning to have it outside only during the spring and summer months here in Myrtle Beach. First off, I am not sure really where to put it. Some sources I see are saying that they like a lot of sunlight and others are saying that they like more shade, so I'm not really sure. I've got one area that I think could be a pretty good contender, I've attached pictures of this area. It is a south facing area with a very good bit of protection from wind. I'd say it gets no sun from sunrise to about 1 or 1:30 in the afternoon, but then it gets full sun from then on until sunset (it isn't on the south side of the house, but it i…

Palm Tree in a Terrarium
by RobustaEnvirons- 7 replies

Recently, I read of a man in England that has been growing a spiderworts (Tradescantia) in a sealed glass container since 1960. That is 56 years its been growing inside there without any water (he did actually water it once in 1972, but only that one time). Its a sealed ecosystem where the plant has created its own water cycle and CO2 cycle as well. During the day the plant takes in CO2 using the sunlight it receives from a nearby window, and during the night it makes CO2. Due to the sealed system, it continually reuses the water that it was given so long ago (about a .5 - 1 pint of water). That got me thinking of whether this would work with a palm tree. I've be…

Hi everyone, I just potted up my first germinated Pelagodoxa Henryana seed; this one has been germinating since Dec 19, 2016. I have 7 more to germinate and will hopefully start a family of them. I used the potting mix suggested by @Pal Meir with slight modifications (1/2 Small Pine Bark with 1/4 Perlite and 1/4 Vermiculite) Wish me luck.

Sabal Causiarum shriving for water?

I went out and saw that my Sabal Causiarum was closing up. Is this a water issue, or is it ready to be repotted or planted in the ground? I'm worried because every time I've had a palm start to close up like this, it meant death. Will they reopen? I've dunked them into a bowl of water to hydrate because it has been a while since I last watered them, but they've never done this before. I suppose with the weather warming up, they may be needing more water?

Washingtonia Robusta

Hi, Please help, I have three Washingtonia Robusta, I have researched online as much as I can but am seeing so much conflicting information. I brought 2 Washingtonia Robusta or mexican fan palms, and one pot had two growing in one, so I hosed down the root ball and untangled the roots and re potted, the two I split are in smaller 36 cm pots, and one I put into a large 60 cm barrel pot. They came 100cm in height, and looked nice and healthy. as soon as I re-potted them they immediately flopped over and the fronds all closed up. the soil mix I looked up and mixed john innes no.3 and half all purpose compost, which was what recommended on a video I watched. I got …

A Coconut in London 1 2

I've finally succumbed and bought myself a Malayan Red Dwarf variety, very reasonably priced on eBay at $36 inc. shipping! It appears the seller shaved both sides of the nut to fit it in the shipping box, although I imagine that making the sides more porous by doing so, expedites the emergence of roots? I can see roots starting to poke through on both sides already. My mix as follows (roughly in equal parts): Seramis / 2 - 7 mm pine propagating mulch / Coir I'm using rainwater in my mix. This is in keeping with my 'grow box' seedling cultivation, whereby I've been using only steam evaporated distilled water; too expensive for a coconut, so rainwater se…

Hydriastele beguinii as a houseplant?

Hello, I’ve been growing these seedlings for 6 months now. Am not sure if they make good houseplants and am curious if anyone has any experience with them. In September, I had them very close to plant lights and I think it burned/bronzed the foliage; I moved them shortly afterwards. Do they prefer lower light? Are they best treated as shade loving understory-type palms as juveniles? I read that high nitrogen fertilizer should be avoided with them. Perhaps that caused the burning? I fertilize weakly, every other watering as I do with the nearby indoor palms: J. Magnificas, verschaffeltia splendida. They are in well draining soil and am careful not to overwater…

Separating Caryota mitis cluster

Went on a plant buying binge today. Found this ~2 or 3 gal for $70. I'd like to pull a few out and use as glorified annuals in ground. What do you think the odds of survival are? I don't know how root sensitive they are. Can't find anything from a quick Google search. I figure I'll soak the rootball and just try to coax a few out.

I've got some big ones and a random gusty wind can take them right down.. Due to where I have to keep them for optimal sunlight, they are not placed around anything that I can anchor them to. I've tried tree stakes but they look kind of ridiculous and I'm concerned it will girdle their trunks. Any Ideas? Thanks.

Verschafeltia splendida and/or Hydriastele (Siphokentia) beguine as a houseplant? 1 2

Has anyone been successful growing Verschafeltia splendida and/or Hydriastele (Siphokentia) beguine as a houseplant? I was visiting a Florida nursery this week to see about purchasing Pelagodoxa henryana seedlings…until I was completely distracted by potted palms I’ve never seen before: Verschafeltia and Hydriastele (Siphokentia). Stunning foliage on these two. I decided to research these prior to buying. Additionally, as I am flying back to frigid New England soon, the logistics were not in my favor. The smallest Verschafeltia measured over 36” (too tall for carry-on dimensions). I thought about Fed-Exing them home, but then saw that temps in Rhode Island would be …

Hello, I have lurked on this forum for a while while learning how to take care of a majesty palm (my first palm of any kind) which I acquired around a year and a half ago. I subsequently became aware of all of the warnings about keeping them as an indoor houseplant, but I thought that I was doing pretty well with mine until it started encountering a new problem which I am trying to understand. It was sold as a Home Depot plant with several palms in the pot, and over the past few months the smaller palms have been dying off. I am beginning to suspect that I will need to repot the main large palm (and also one remaining smaller palm which I think is still alive) if the…

Dark spots on Lipstick Palm petioles

My Lipstick Palm has beautifully red petioles since over a year (after a long wait) and when I saw big clusters of dark brown spots on these, I first thought it was nothing (just some pigmentation): But when I checked it with a loupe it turned out a bit more suspicious. My plant book suggests it could be either scale insects or what I think you in English call just "edema" or "oedema", because small wounds have formed which when healing cause corky stuff (in my country it is called "cork disease"), and that the edema can be caused either by bugs (e g different kinds of mites or thrips) or physiologically. I've been trying to identify what it is and I wonder if anyone w…

Help with an unhappy pygmy date palm

Hi everybody, I’m new to the forum but was hoping with your expertise you might be able to shed some light on what’s going on with an unhappy pygmy date palm. For the last several weeks, the lower fronds have been progressively yellowing starting at the tips of the leaflets and moving inwards, and then progressing to brown, again starting at the tips and progressing inward until the whole frond dies. You can see what I mean in the photos below. Is this pattern a tell-tale sign of anything? My usual assumption is that I’m either overwatering or underwatering, though in my experience it usually seems to be much easier to overwater. I typically water every week…

Seeds from the beach, lots. 1 2 3

Hey Guys, I went down to Panama city beach and stayed at a resort for an extended weekend and while there came across quite a lot of palm seeds at the resort. The place was covered in palms, mostly sago, sabal, and butias, some others as well. Anyway, While down there, a storm washed probably thousands of what appear to be germinated sabal seedlings on shore. I collected a handful of them, wrapped them in a wet napkin, placed them in a zip lock bag, and brought them home. Here the sabal seedlings are from the beach: What are the chances of these guys making it if I plant them again? I also picked up 10 sabal seeds that …

cocos nucifera Stalled potted coconut palm growth?

Hi everyone, I have owned this coconut palm since mid July and it has not grown a single centimetre. I bought it directly from a nursery here in Toronto, it is of the Malaysian dwarf subtype by the nursery/brand loco coco. Do you guys think it's healthy? Any gross potassium or magnesium deficiency? It did have a fungus gnat infestation 2 weeks ago, after which I didn't water it and let the soil dry out while keeping it outdoors to prevent spread of the critters, they have thankfully not returned. The soil is 50% perlite and 50% regularpotting soil. Thanks in advance.
