Beccariophoenix alfredii

Hi all, Just felt like showing my newest aquisition; a Beccariophoenix alfredii. I have never seen one this size for sale in the Netherlands and just couldn't resist! I was participating in a locally organized exotic plant fair and decided to take a stroll along all the stands before the opening of the fair. I immediately noticed the coconutty appearance and went straight for it. Very quickly I secured this palm for 45 euro's which is a bargain in these parts of Europe. The palm came from a grower in southern Europe somewhere and as I have seen before with palms from those regions, it's in some kind of dense clayish (very heavy) soil. I plan on r…

Hi Guys. I bought 10 seeds of beccariophoenix alfredii. I have read all the topics on this palmtalk forum, but they are about the palm tree in the garden. And I would like to advise you, what is the best substrate mixture for b.alfredii at home, in a pot, for germinated seeds? Some write, that she likes a lot of water, others that he prefers dry subsoil. I am asking for advice.

Beccariophoenix fenestralis

Not yet in pots, here is 5 month's growth in a temperature-controlled humidity chamber (85 F - 90 F). With temperatures improving here in London, UK, I'm hoping it won't be long before I can pot these up and let them see some sunlight. One of our UK EPS members has a stunning conservatory example in his home in the North of England, so there's hope that I can grow this as an indoor palm too.

Hello, I am very new to growing palms. So far I have 4 parlor palms and I am waiting on some princess, kentia, and foxtail seeds. I live in a cooler climate so the plants will be inside Nov-Feb. I do have a laundry room at home where a ballast already exists and could be re-purposed, but if I were to look at any ballast-free lighting, what would my options be. Ideally, bulbs that I could add to a lamp or a plugin strip would be ideal. Also, what bulb wattage would be sufficient? Thanks in advance.

Hello, I am very new to growing palms. I have 4 small parlor palms so far and am looking to provide some fertilizer. I checked my local dollar store and bought these: https://www.amazon.ca/Jobes-Houseplant-Indoor-Fertilizer-Spikes/dp/B000279304/ref=pd_cp_86_3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=7PEKWC42Z91P52MDSVZK Would they be ok, or would something like these from Amazon be better? https://www.amazon.ca/Jobes-Indoor-Fertilizer-30-Pack-5101/dp/B000GD3KD0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1493138672&sr=8-1&keywords=jobe%27s+palm+spikes Thanks in advance.

I came across a great article by Geoff Stein on indoor palms and I thought it was great enough to share. Most importantly, he names specific palms that can thrive indoors along with common pitfalls and marginal/poor indoor palms. Enjoy: http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/303#b

I live in zone 7a (Olney MD) and have 2 6 foot cat palms that are outgrowing their 3 gallon pots. (They are about 6 feet tall and falling over with each gust of wind) I want to move them to a bigger pots where they will live outdoors about 1/2 the year and spend colder months in my basement, under grow lights (unless there is a chance they will do well in a 40 degree F garage all winter) What is a good size pot to move them into and what is the best medium in which to plant them? Potting mix? a mixture of sand and potting soil? something else? Thanks

Best potting mix for livistona chinensis?

Ok so I had a community pot with around twenty seedlings, but the soil was too saturated and they started declining, plus an ant infestation took hold and it was a mess, so I made a new mix 30% perlite 10% peat moss 20% miracle grow cactus and palm, and 40% top soil. Only 7 survived the ordeal but they were doing great, I ferilitzed them and they were all putting out their third or fourth strap leaf. The soil drained perfect, but now it has ants again and some fuzzy mold or fungus, probably from the undissolved fertilizer, Nelson palm fertizer btw if anyone was wondering, what do i do now?

Best potting soil mixes

Hi, There are not that many potting soils to choose from in this city, even store bought very well draining soil for succulents and cactus seems to cause some problems. The soil I buy contains pine bark chips, some coco fiber and peat moss. I add perlite to that mix. It seems the water drains quite fast but the main concern is that the mix absorbs a lot of water which is squeezable. I've just recently repotted Arch. Alexandrea I had bought 2weeks ago and 2 of its leaves lost the green, withered with pale green. Could it be due to the soil or something else? What would be your best well draining potting soil mix? Stuff I could get here: vermiculite, per…

I've tried builders sand, play sand, aquarium sand and I do not like them at all except the aquarium sand but it is too expensive. Would pool filter sand be any good? I need a larger coarse grain size that drains well, not sugar grain sized.

Best small crownshaft palm for a pot that is coldhardy

Ok so wordy title but that pretty much covers it. I have a container ranch since I am in Missouri. Usual suspects like sago's, pygmy dates etc. We have a pool in full sun we like to tropic up in the summer. Would like something similar to a Christmas palm but able to take a freeze or 2 to whack the bugs before they come in for the winter. So full sun, cold tolerant and limited humidity and light for 4 months. Is this a unicorn or are there afew candidates. Don't get me wrong I love trachies, sabal and the like, but nothing says tropics like crownshafts swaying in the breeze. Thanks in advance Nate

Big Chamaedorea Elegans
by David_Sweden- 7 replies

How come these two specimens look so different? Both are around 100cm incl pot: The left one I think is attractive because of how it's lushfully gushing out of the pot, creating its own little jungle. The right one is more elegant and equally pretty I think. Can't decide which one I like most. My best guess is that the left one has had light from all directions and the right one only from the ceiling, perhaps crowded by 100 other ones like it at the sides. But that's just me guessing. And sometimes when I compare bought palms with home grown ones I get the feeling the growers might have some tricks to make them stretch. I mean look at them, most people wouldn…
