washingtonia Mexican Fan Palm stuck
by ChicagoDee- 3 replies

Can someone please help? Bought this washie as a rehab from Lowes clearance section. She hung out in the backyard all summer. Didn’t grow a ton but got a little healthier and a couple new fronds. I decided to clean her and bring her inside. (I live in Chicago) Medium is very chunky: premium potting mix with perlite, added bark, pumice, charcoal and cactus mix. Since October, I have only watered twice. It immediately lost all fronds (didn’t cut them until they were totally brown) except the unopened one. All these months that frond has still not opened! It’s in suspended animation. Do I need to water more? Is this just transplant shock??? It’s in a north facing window with…

Green & Golden Mayan Dwarf Palms. Have discovered a new passion for palms. I take care of them so much almost OCD. Worm castings, black kow composted manure, homemade cold pressed neem sprays, ant traps - I discovered getting rid of the ants gets rid of coconut scale protection. Have also introduced ladybugs each coconut palm has a colony of around a dozen black lady beetles!

Mini greenhouse multi-tasking

My elderly kitty, Great Great Grandma, is semi-retired, and she has come to really appreciate some extra heat. Here she is atop some greenhouses in my bathroom which are heated to 80 F 27 C 24/7.I gave her a little towel, but she seems to like it better right on the plastic. Do your cats/dogs/other critters like your heated germination devices?

Hi growers of rainforest palms! What is your experience with the minimal relative humidity of the air for growing understory palms such as Kerriodoxa, Joey palm and tropical chamaedoreas? I read that they need high humidity. But how high is enough? 60%? 70% Are more adult palms more tolerante to dryer air than seedlings? Thanks

Minimum Pot Depth for Caryota mitis?

I received some seed from @DoomsDave last year and even after moving and cats and everything else, I still have two seedlings left. They're a deep green, and seem very healthy. However! In giving them a deep soak today I noticed that there are new tiny little spears coming up from the edge of the stem, not the center... Then I did some research to find that C. mitis is a Tillering palm! So, now I'm a bit worried. They're in a rather small pot right now, and they only have 3 or 4 leaves each. How big of a pot do I need for these? Or, more importantly, how deep to accommodate the tillering of this species? (while we're at it, what soil composition do th…

It lives in our guest bedroom which my in laws temperately live... it has a oil electrical heater and the temp never goes below 18 c... As my in laws are leaving and also myself might go overseas for few weeks...my question is " what is the minimum temperate that this seedling can stay alive?" any input or your own experience and I will be grateful

I guess it's time for an update. I lost my job in January, lost my car, lost my apartment. Depression hit me really hard. Really hard. Not going into details, but if a friend of mine didn't happen to catch a layover in Texas, I wouldn't be here. He rented me a U-Haul to help me get back to my family's house in Mississippi. I wasn't in the greatest mindset, and I left most of my palms and plants in the apartment. I brought my spindle, C. Plumosa, my L. Weddellaniums, a couple snake plants, a Mangave, and my BxLyto. Everything else was left in the apartment and donated to the staff. They must be happy, because they didn't charge me for breaking the lease or not …

Mixing/Splitting Liquid Fertilizer
by knell- 17 replies

I was wondering if anyone has experience with or knows if it is possible to mix your own liquid fertilizers? There are brands at the hydro store that sell liquid N, P and K by themselves (e.g. 1-0-0)... is it possible to get all three and do blends with other micronutrients? Or do the ratios not transfer like that? Im guessing it is a lot more work than ordering custom fertilizer but I like the idea of having more control over the mixes. Im sure there are organic versions of this as well? Thanks in advance.

More "Prep" suggestions before Pelagodoxa "Surgery"

Hi, Palm Lovers, palms fanatics, and palm friends: I have really been getting some wonderful advice prior to my uprooting of a Pelagodoxa palm, temporarily containerising it, then having it over its transplant shock (hopefully!) by the time it is ready to have a way more pleasing home in my yet-to-be-constructed Central Alabama greenhouse in April, 2021. (Alas, this is my last storm season and winter in South Florida after 40 years here, so the change will be very significant!) At any rate, several members have given me: "gold standard" advice about HOW to extricate this 7 ft. tall Pelagodoxa, now growing quite well in our rocky SE Florida soil. It seems doubtfu…

So, I've got a lot of palms that stay indoors year round. Should I feed them despite the fact that winter is here? Among my year round indoor palms are a C. Cataractarum, L. Weddellanium, Kentia, lady palm, and a. Tuckerii. Non palms include a monstera and various draecaena. Fwiw I have Jobes organic palm food, Carl Pool slow release, Jobes palm spikes, and super stinky Alaska fish palm food that I can add to water

Moving in with a container ranch
by Funkthulhu- 7 replies

Just wanted to share a happy moment. I'm moving into a Mid-Century Ranch with my awesome lady and she's cool with my container ranch. Decided to make sure she understood what she was getting into by putting all my bigger palms (save for a few still on the porch) in our new Library. Gotta love moving from a north-facing apartment into a house with floor-to-ceiling East windows! (now complete with red cat-bench from which to watch the bird & squirrel channel) Now to find space for all the big stuff still on the patio and all the seedlings!

hello, I would be very grateful for some help with my Kentia (Howea Forsteriana). Some leaves have turned black, as you can see in the pics. The frond that is most affected also has some visible problem on the stalk (also in pics). The plant gets good indirect sunlight (but was in a darker spot for a few weeks after I bought it) and no very cold temperatures or drafts. I don't think it has been seriously overwatered but maybe slightly overwatered on occasion in the past. I bought it about two months ago and repotted it at that time. I realised later (partly from reading on palmtalk) that the soil I used was probably a bit too heavy for it, and also I'm not sur…

Mushrooms starting to grow...

I just received some dwarf palmettos (Sabal minor) in the mail, which arrived in cones. I planted them immediately in pots and am storing them in my sun room to avoid some heavy rains at the moment. Just this morning, I noticed some small mushrooms growing in the pots -- is this a problem for the palms? Should I just pluck them out of the ground or do nothing at all? Or, do I need to re-pot immediately? I did not have time to take pictures as I had to leave for work, but I can certainly add those later. Thanks, Tony

Figured I'd throw up some pics of everything I have growing in the apartment. First pic is 2 Dracaenas, a Ti plant, a Rhapsis Excelsea and a Howea Forsteriana. 2nd is a little Monstera that just put out a new leaf. 3rd is 2 clumps of C. Elegans, 4th is a bigger clump of C. Elegans and 2 Lytocaryum Weddellanium(growing like tiny rockets). 5th is a shot of my patio, 6th is my Chambeyronia Macrocarpa and the C. Cataractum I was ready to chuck into the dumpster (it's pushing new growth now). 7th is a Calthea that isn't happy but keeps living. 8th is what I hope is my Queen palm finally going pinnate, 9th is my Washy pushing another leaf (still wearing the …
