A few more palms to be planted when ready
by happypalms- 0 replies
As with any collection of plants they need to be grown to a plantable size before planting into an established garden the problem for new plants is the competition from the advanced plants competing for light and moisture also the danger for the new plants is falling branches and dropping palm leaves flattening them on the spot they also need to marked with some sort of bright tape for future watering and maintenance making it easier to see them in the established jungle garden hopefully one day the new garden plants will look as beautiful as the established one

I received the seeds from rps last October and have been putting them in the moss to promote germination. Only three had sprouted as of yesterday. Yesterday I accidentally noticed that the seemingly hard seed coat of this plant was very thin, so I broke the outer shell of three seeds to expose their bud points, and today I found that their bud points are all bulging.

A new soil mix question
by JT in Japan- 9 replies
- 1.3k views
All, I've been re-reading all the excellent advice in other threads re: soil mix. Especially the epic "your soil mix" (http://www.palmtalk.org/forum/index.php?/topic/48442-your-soil-mix-tell-us/&page=3) But I have a situation that isn't addressed, and that I'm worrying about. I'm about to purchase a truck load of soil from a professional hibiscus grower, and he tells me that it's about 30% peat, and he worries it's maybe too water-retentive for my palms. I want to buy the mix because it's the right price, and I also want to use it for all my repotting, across 4 different palms. I'm going to pot up about 600 seedlings, of 4 genera: Arch. cunninghamiana,…

A tale of 2 C. Cataractarum
by JohnAndSancho- 4 replies
I'm starting to wonder if my little Cataractarum is a goner. I had another post where i mentioned that I used a fine "top dressing" sand thinking it'd help with soil drainage and it just plugged all the drainage in the pot. It lost a sucker, and I keep trimming the dried black ends and yellow/black leaves off of it, and every day there's more black. I did repot it and got all the sand out a week ago, didn't notice any root rot. It's big brother has been in this corner since I've had it, and all it does is grow. I've had to cut a few stalks off of the big one too, but it hasn't missed a beat. Do y'all think the little guy is salvageable? How long …

A. alex repot or not?
by cisco- 4 replies

What do you think report or not? A. alex 'Beatrice' already has a lot of hair roots on its surface. It must be in the water at all the times. The current pot is 12 liters. The next size would be 25 liters. I'll wait until that new leaf is opened. I'm gonna repot after that if it is good for the palm. Is it?

Absolute noob with a kentia palm
by Aspiringplantmom- 1 follower

Just moved into my boyfriends apartment, and I have no experience whatsoever with plants. But I’ve made it my mission to revive a beautiful plant that came with his apartment. He has what appears to be a kentia palm in ill health. I’m trying to revive it but I have very limited knowledge. I think it was under watered, so I cut off brown leaf tips. It gets plenty of indirect natural light. I began dusting and misting it. I am wondering what you guys think: Do I need to repot it? If so, are there any recommended resources for how to properly repot it and exactly what supplies/planters to purchase. I have access to an outside porch area. Does the size of t…

Acephate
by Darold Petty- 8 replies
- 1.3k views
I'm having problems inside my greenhouse with mealybug, scale, and spider mites. I am considering the use of acephate, an 'old-school' systemic insecticide. (It is labeled for use against mites, also). In the past I have used a liquid form containing 9.4% acephate, costing $20 for one pint, (16 fluid ounces). I see that this chemical is also offered as a dry, soluble powder containing 97.4% acephate, costing $18 for 0.773 pounds. This form is usually labeled for use against fire ants. Are these two forms equivalent for use by foliar spraying, and wouldn't the dry powder be much more economical ? Thanks for any advice !

Adding marine sand to a potting mix
by SoulofthePlace- 1 follower

What do you think marine sand will do to palm seedlings or small plants if marine sand is added to the potting mix while transplanting little palms? We don't have normal yellow construction sand available on the island and therefore everyone uses the grey marine sand (occasionally with some small shells) for construction purposes and after a few years salt crystals are coming out of the walls damaging painted surface etc. Now if I add say 30% of marine sand into the potting mix for better drainage along with perlite, do you think it can potentially damage the potted plants? The marine sand is piled up in the county enterprise and is for sale and it's there for an unknown …

Hello all. First time posting in this pots thread. I keep my outdoor palms in pots, and like adding additional plants to fill out the pot. Is this a good practice, or not due to competing of nutrients in the pot? I have 2 be majesty’s that I put in pots outside and don’t want to strain them. Below is a pic of my triangle with additional plants in the same pot. Doesn’t seem to complain...

There are 3 palms in this pot one of the latest new fronds which has been green and healthy I just noticed looks burned. Any ideas. Not enough water? The room it’s in is around 80f all the time humidity 40. It was a shade grown palm and outside it got cooked so I brought it in a month ago to recover and it had been doing awesome. It also gets misted many times a day and sometime I turn a humidifier on.

For some time now I have been thinking about planting the seeds of one of these palm trees in a pot. I am interested in how fast these palm trees grow and how long it took for your palm trees to reach a height for example of 1 meter. I hope that there are so many people on this forum who have such palms since these ones were sprouts that I will get at least one answer per species.

hello, Hope all are doing well. I re potted a coconut palm from a 15" pot to 20". Per some posts I read here, I have used Micro life. I was wondering if I need to use salt, HastaGro and Bonide (BND7458) - Grass Beater Concentrate at this time? I bought it in Florida last November. it was infested with scale but had shiny leaves. I did baby it last winter, this winter I would like to see if I can leave it out a bit longer in a bit lower temps. it was under a patio during the summer, does receive east sun.
