Drowning in a Giant Pot
by Frond-friend42- 1 follower

I noticed in another stream that juvenile palms and other plants get dead from too big of a pot, for some reason. How does this happen. Why does too much pot lead to death. I would think you could still give enough water and....oh....thats it. I think the roots aren't clearing the well watered pot quick enough, and so it has a tendency to not dry out quick enough, and literally "drown" in too big a pot with to high water content. Any other thoughts or theories are welcome of course, as to the negative impact of a too-big pot.

Exposed roots

I've been wondering...say you germinate a seed in a pot, and its root growth lifts the seed up out of the media. Should you replant the thing deeper? I worry about disturbing the roots, but also worry about leaving them exposed. This is currently the case with a couple of my licualas and also coccothrinax fragrans. Thanks for any input you can provide.

Imperial palm potted care tips

I bought an imperial palm plant 3 months ago with 5 open fronds and 2 closed. One frond initially turned yellow and died within the first month but I wasn't concerned as I thought the rest of the plan was doing fine. However since past 1 week I see that 2 fronds are yellowing together. It has only 2 other fronds. And 2 unopened which have not opened since 3 months. I water it once a week. We got some plant food spray 3 days ago and we changed the soil and added some fresh potting mix as intially we had used garden soil mix. Can you give some tips on how to save it?

Grow lights?

I just moved into a new townhome, and while it has PLENTY of room outside for my potted pots and they are thriving, the downstairs indoors has minimal lighting and it's killing me not having any palms (or other plants for that matter) in the home. It's seriously lacking in greenery. We are in need for some floor lamps anyway, so does anyone have any recommendations on a 4-5 foot tall grow light that isn't hideous and similar looking to a typical floor lamp? How bright is it and how much of a sun-loving palm (or other plant for that matter) can I get away with? Is there the risk of burning anything that doesn't want a lot of light? I also have a bookshelf that…

Where to find affordable pots?

I've never really had an issue finding cheap little plastic pots, but recently it's been a nightmare. Big Box stores have nothing larger than 1.5 gal or so unless it's one of those over-price "ornate" pastic pots that they want $25+ for. Usually there are larger black plastic pots of all sizes, but everything seems to be picked clean or having covid-related supply issues. I have six palms sitting in 3 gal containers that I purchased this summer, and they need to be potted up to 5 or so gals; I see some roots peaking through the bottom. I've also got an L. P. Sumawongii in a 7 gal nursery pot right now that needs to be potted up to a 10 or so gal. The nursery's soil also s…

New Palms

Hi all, I have enjoyed learning from this community and am excited to receive my first palms shortly. I live in 8a zone and have recently purchased two Sabal sp Tamaulipas and one Sabal brazoriensis, which will arrive in 3.5" (24 fl. oz/0.7 L) pots. We will moving in about 3 years (after grad school) to either a 8b or 9a zone, when we will then plant these in the ground. I wanted to ask for a good re-potting strategy for the next 3 years until. What size pot, sun amount, watering, etc. Thanks.

Hi everyone, Glad to be accepted into the forum :-). My recent adoption of a dwarf date palm tree has led me here, to reach out for your help. Originally the tree was planted on the ground before I received it, which now lives in an outdoor pot in my small backyard. The guy who supplied the tree surprised me that he could drop it off quickly on the day and was caught half-prepared. He had dropped it off without a soil bag and unfortunately had to stay like that overnight as my backyard is just concrete (with fake grass). I did as much as I could to quickly pot it on the next day with a mixture of peat, good quality soil & sand along with a 15cm/6" base of sc…

Hello! I have 3 washingtonia robustas growing from seeds in 1.5 gallon pots. This spring I'm going to repot them into bigger ones. So my question is. How important to them is root damage, because some of roots are sticking out from drain holes and there is no way rather that clip them off? My 6 moths old palms and me on the picture.

I'm curious if keeping soil warmer using a heat mat under the pot can help/trick your palm when they're indoors? Or would the fronds need an equal ambient temperature to make a difference?

Scippia Blues

Schippia looks sad. Lots of dried leaves. I had him in about 3 hours of direct sun (east-facing) and now he's in about 6 hours, closer to the window. Seems to be a bit wet maybe. Area is hot and humid, trying to make it like Belize, where he's from. Even the lead leaf opening up seems to have brown, dried areas. Any ideas how I can help perk this guy up?

Watering with ice cubes?

Subject came up on a Google news feed for indoor plants, not specifically indoor palms but got me to thinking about this since over watering is the #1 killer of indoor palms. I have done it with Orchids and occasionally with potted palms but not as my mainstay watering program. Anyone here that has done this long term? and how did your palms do?

Some kind of fungus in my pots, please advise.
by Reynevan- 8 replies

Hi there, I have couple pots filled with Lytocaryum seedlings. Today I wanted to check how are they doing and uncovered some top soil to check on moisture level. I've noticed tiny dots of fungus? I think. Do you think it's a threat? Have a look. The soil is wet cause I just watered it. I am underwatering them for majority of time so this is not causes by being waterlogged all the time. Soil mix is Pine Bark - Seramis-Lava rock-Coco coir in mixed ratio. It's almost only Pine bark that has these white things growing on it. I had to dig in with a knife to solid 4-5 cm to get to this affected parts of soil.

Mushrooms starting to grow...

I just received some dwarf palmettos (Sabal minor) in the mail, which arrived in cones. I planted them immediately in pots and am storing them in my sun room to avoid some heavy rains at the moment. Just this morning, I noticed some small mushrooms growing in the pots -- is this a problem for the palms? Should I just pluck them out of the ground or do nothing at all? Or, do I need to re-pot immediately? I did not have time to take pictures as I had to leave for work, but I can certainly add those later. Thanks, Tony

Nitrozyme/ gibberellins
by Frond-friend42- 3 replies

Do any of you use nitrozyme or other similar products to aid germination? I understand it can backfire and cause an elongated seedling more prone to wither and die. Are there situations where it is a good idea and works well?

Seeds and Light
by Frond-friend42- 1 follower

I understand most seeds benefit from darkness or germination can be inhibited by wither direct sunlight or any light. Do some seed light to germinate or strongly be fit from it for germination. I read somewhere that hyophorbe seeds benefit from light for germination, for example and have seen pots of some seeds left out for germination in the sun. Its hard to keep t rack for me to figure out which seeds need which conditions. Coccothrinax and copernicia for example. Seems like they might be under high heat snd high light, but Riffle's encyclopedia compares them to corypha and says avoid direct sunlight . Which replicated being in some tall grass or some swamp when t…

Cat Palm Stressing me Out...

Hi yall This is my first post and I was really excited to see there's a whole forum for this- I'm mostly on Swedespeed- a Volvo forum. Im based here in NE Ohio where for about 5 months it's lovely and green outside, yellow/red for a month in the fall, then 6 months of grey dark winter where it looks like a nuke went off. I honestly get really depressed in the winters here not being able to see any green so I wanted to make a change and get in a big ol palm. I got this big Cat Palm from Lowes (not the best place I know) and I mounted a LED grow flood light to the wall. The bulb also lights up the livingroom once it's dark (it's on a timer for 13 hours a day)…
