Hey guys! I'm toying with the idea of splitting up my cluster of four kentias into four individual pots. During this process my idea is to convert them from soil to a semi-hydro setup using Leca. I was inspired by the following thread concerning palms in Leca, specifically the impressive success story by user wimmie of two very large howeas growing semi hydro in pure Leca. My questions/concerns about the process are the following: -I've heard a lot about how sensitive kentias roots are and I'd want to go about separating my cluster in the best possible way, so any advice on how to do that without shocking/killing the plants would be much appreciated. …

Howea Fosterena issues/bugs

Hi, A couple months ago I ordered a Kentia palm from an Etsy shop. I got 4 plants in a 1g pot. The smallest of the 4 had some serious browning, and one of the suckers eventually went fully brown and I cut it off. A day or so later, I saw a tiny ball of white fuzz on an opening leaf (mealybugs?) so I squished the bug, gave it a long shower, and treated it with insecticidal soap. Today, the tree that had the brown sucker on it felt really squishy and pretty much fell over, so I cut it off at the soil level. Do I need to dig up the roots and repot the remaining 3 Kentias, or will it be ok? Knock on wood I haven't seen any more bugs on this or any other of my…

Bismarckia nobilis spike stunt

I bought a young 3 Gal Bismarckia nobilis with 2 spikes 1 month ago. When it arrived it had a little nick in growth meaning it was not growing straight upwards, but making a little curve to the left. It seemed healthy apart from the oldest 2 leaves. To adjust to a straight growth I decided to repot without touching the root system and is now in a 7 gal, ever since those beautiful 2 spikes are not moving neither opening. Not sure if it takes time or the shipping was stressful (came from FL) stunt the growth or its boron deficiency? Or it takes time for them to open? My C.Fallaensis opened 2 spikes in no time

Thanks to PalmatierMeg and NatureGirl, this is an update of my palm purchased this year. 1. Single Schippia concolour, leftmost, has really struggled but might be coming back or just slowly dying. Suffered a spear-pull and was reported and treated with h202. 2. Numerous veitchias winin. Tough monkeys seem bullet proof. I've kept them from heavy sun but they seem to do great wherever. 3. Single Cryosophila guagara. 2nd from left.Very slowly growing. Was worried about this one but seems to have turned a corner. The spear has been frozen but just started to move. 4. Single Euterpe edulis. In rear. Just spotted the second tiny new spear.. 5. Rightmo…

I have had the potted palms in the linked pictures for more than 20 years. About a month ago, I repotted them for the first time in several years. At that time, the roots and stems looked healthy (no evidence of what I would recognize as root rot). However, since then the two plants have started dropping leaves from the bottom up. The stalks at first wilt, then dry up, and then turn brown/yellow. The discoloration occurs throughout the entirety of the stalk and leaves and not just at the ends of the leaves. In the pictures, the one palm may look elongated, but I think this is this is just reflective of the volume of leaf loss. I am at a loss for what may be…

Hi, First time posting, been reading the forum for almost a year and loving the community. Found this palm on the side of the road - it was used to stage a house and discarded- it’s now inside, humidifier running as I have other tropical plants, and is raised up out of cat reach next to a North facing window due to space Apartment has 12’ high ceilings, I’ve also got large windows facing West and potentially a South facing window (if I move my tropics and succulents). The fronds are browning quite severely and I’m slowly increasing my watering as I don’t want to shock it. It has a new frond coming up and it’s still growing well despite the ic…

Reed palm with one rotted stalk

I have had a lovely reed palm for eight months now and she has been doing quite well... until recently. My kitten had started using her as her litter box, so I took out the root ball, shook off the extra soil, dumped the urine-soaked soil, and the repotted into a new pot of the same size with new soil. She was okay for about a week and then I noticed the leaves of two of the stems coming from the same stalk were dying quickly. I cut them away a few days ago, leaving one stem on the stalk. Last night I examined the stalk again and saw at its base it was black. I barely touched it there and the whole stalk broke off with white and black mush inside the base of the stalk. …

Repotted my Jubaea seedling in Florida

I moved this 3-4 month old baby up from a cup today to a 3 gal (?), with large holes at the bottom with tons of perlite. It looks small but the root system was already busting the seams. I’m keeping the seed and the growing point above the soil as that keeps it safer from rot (in my experience). A lot of people think it’s crazy to grow Jubaea in a humid climate, but it’s the nematodes that’s do them in. A very freely draining pot out of the soil is a safe bet. I won’t be fertilizing yet. Let’s see where we go from here!

Why does my Parlor Palm have pale leaves?

Having trouble figuring out the problem; there are also some brown spots, and not just on the tips- some of them are in the middle of the leaves. Really worried about mites, though it could also be because of a vent (which I moved it away from recently), or because our tap water has lots of lime. I mist it daily. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Overwatered?

I have had this lady palm for over a year now and then all of a sudden it started looking terrible. I was suspicious it was overwatered so I repotted it, the bottom dirt was extremely soggy which seems to confirm my suspicions. I repotted with a cactus mix and added vermiculite and perlite, and trimmed most of the dead/really poor looking fronds. But now it’s so sad looking! I left some of the rougher stuff on just because I couldn’t bare to cut it down that much. Have I done the right things? Does it just need time? This palm is very special to me and I want it looking happy again!

What type of Archonto are these?

I swung by Uncle Jutty’s today and they had an Archonto triplet for sale that I’d noticed a few months ago. I’m pretty sure they’re stunted just by looking at them, but also because they had seriously outgrown their pot to the point their upper roots weren’t even covered anymore and there was a huge mass of roots under the pot. I’ve since hosed off a good bit of the old soil they had on the roots, pruned off some less-than-stellar-looking fronds, and planted in a 2:1:1 mix of pine bark, MG palm soil, and perlite in a 25 G pot. I actually cut off the smallest of the triplet too because it was SERIOUSLY stunted and I figured the two remaining would do much better without a …

Good palms to winter indoors in Southeast US
by SunnySoCal- 0 replies

Hey guys, newbie here! Fairly new to plant care in general, but love vines, hardy plants, and tropicals. Looking for some medium-sized palms for the deck in the summer which I can winter indoors. In my area it’s quite easy to find smaller, shrublike ones as houseplants, but the only bigger ones readily available are Ladies and Dwarf Cavendish Bananas. I am interested in these species but would also really like a Christmas palm, a double or triple Baby Queen, and maybe a Montgomery or Solitarie palm. (Had a local nursery check into ordering these for me, but they could only find the Christmas palm). So I guess my question is a bit of a double-barrele…

“Winged it” with a grow bulb + C. Cataractarum

So after a ton of research, I decided to “wing it” with a c. cataractarum and a grow bulb. My living room has next to no natural light and it was killing me not having a plant in the room. I used a plug-in pendant light hung from the ceiling and a GE grow bulb with a (cheap, $20, wasn’t willing to risk this failing on an expensive palm, haha) C. cataractarum. I am seeing solid results so far! It’s been about 2 months and this thing has fought off spider mites all while throwing out and opening 3 new fronds, with two large spears about to open now. I was worried about the fronds that don’t get a ton of light, but they just keep growing and I haven’t had a singl…

Hi everybody! I have a serious problem with germination of the coconuts. Many coconuts start to rot during the germination (some seedlings survive only). The surface of the coconuts and the embryo are covered with the white fuzzy / powder mold. I realize that the germination of the coconuts from the supermarkets is often associated with a high risk of failure, but if it is possible, I would at least want to minimize the formation of the molds on the coconuts. Since I grow the coconut palms indoor (I have a large south window where I grow my coconut palms for several years), I would like to use some natural (not chemical) fungicides. So far, I've only tried potassium …

Washingtonia trouble

Hi everyone, I think my palm is not very happy but honestly I don't know why. Only two green leaves remain and no new one has emerged since I acquired it about a month ago. We had a crazy month with lots of rain and cloudy skies here in Yucatan and I couldn't always protect her. What could be the problem? Perhaps the bag doesn't drain well? Too much water? Too little sun? Should I move it to a pot? Thank you for your help.

C. renda leaves browning.

My Cyrtostachys renda has some browning on a few of it's larger leaves and I'm wondering if this is a sign of a larger problem. The soil is kept constantly moist and it's at a consistent temp of 65-78F and RH of 60%. It has an led grow light above it on a low setting to help with light as well as warmth through the winter. Thanks in advance!

Licuala peltata ‘Sumawongii’ - puckered leaves how long?
by piping plovers- 1 follower

Anyone know long it takes for this palm to advance from what I would consider the juvenile puckered & cupped leaf phase? Curious to know how long it will take until the new leaves take on the circular flat appearance that makes this variety so attractive. This is probably 5 yrs old; I have owned it for 3 years. I’ve seen enough photos online of the immature phases and most seem to have the puckered, cupped distorted fan look, so I don’t think I have a mutant Sumawongii. Any thoughts on how many years to go? Photo below; my cattleya orchid was lonely and thinks it’s a palm now.

I have all of my palms in plastic self-watering pots. I noticed my big cataractarum has grown some huge roots in the water tray at the bottom. Is this going to cause root rot or any other issues? It's grown a ton in the roughly 6 months I've had it.

Bamboo Palm | First Plant

Hey folks. I am new here. I am new to plant care. I received this pretty, tall "Bamboo Palm." I have had issues identifying specifically what it is, so that I can find care tips for it. All I could really do was get a general sense looking at similar palms (cat?). I thought I was doing terribly because the car ride home stressed it out quite a bit, but its actually held up pretty well the last few months. I noticed some new leaves developing. I live in the pacific northwest. A lot of tutorials I've seen mention that one should remove dust from the plant? That seems a bit meticulous, as I don't have a traditional feather duster. The seller told me to water it once a …
