Chamaerops fungus or tomentum?
by Keys6505- 6 replies

Howdy, can anyone tell me if this is fungus or tomentum? I first saw the spots on the leaves a few weeks ago but found a thread on here saying it wasn't unusual for Chamaerops to have white residue. It seems like it is much more abundant on the new leaves and the neighboring potted Trachy now has some white spots on the closest petiole as well(first pic Trachy, second and third pics Chamaerops).

Aloe Hercules

Hello! New to this..I just recently bought a beautiful 5 gallon aloe hercules. I would love for it to thrive and not kill it lol. What brand soil do you suggest I use for it? I plan to keep it in a pot for now. I've heard mixed reviews about the cactus and palm mix from Kellogs which I have. I've also heard it's best to add pumice or perlite to the mix. Also can anyone give me advice on which size pot to get? how often to water and best place to let it hang out outside? Thanks!

Fronds eaten in the 1st 18 hrs of owning?!

Hello there! I just purchased this adorable Majesty Palm from Lowe’s, last evening. I inspected it what I thought was thoroughly, all of the fronds seem to be in perfect condition and I honestly didn’t notice any spotting whatsoever. That is why I chose this particular plant. However this morning, I come into my office to discover that some fronds are almost completely eaten and there are large holes in others as well as these yellow/black spots and tiny light green spotting... I can find absolutely no bugs, no residue, no webs, please help me! I’ve searched everywhere for advice!

Crazy Grow Bulb Plan with Coconut Palm

I've been growing a Coconut Palm for about a year that I bought locally. It has been doing really well but I've had to move it to a larger pot, which now has self-watering. I have this crazy idea to put an LED grow-bulb above it to help it grow. My plan was to put an LED grow-bulb in the canned light above it. I have some concerns though: Is this dangerous to humans having one of these lights above the plant? Would this even be worth it? There is a south facing window near the plant and generally a decent amount of natural light but not a lot of strong sunlight getting to it. I'm looking at something like this: https://www.amazon.com/GE-Lighting-9…

Kentia seedlings in leca
by PsyPalm- 9 replies

I recently picked up a cluster (20-25) of howea seedlings and separated them into numerous small pots and decided to take a shot at growing them in leca. I wanted to try out a few different semi-hydro pot/container styles since it's my first time growing these in leca and I wanted to see if some things work better than others. In the picture from left to right we have: -Lechuza deltini mini filled with lechuza pon and topped with leca -White ceramic 4" pot with leca in plastic liner -White ceramic 3" pot with leca in plastic liner -4" terra cotta pot with leca submerged in marble water reservoir -Clear 500ml beaker with pure leca, no plastic…

Ive noticed this mainly since ive started keeping it in a small greenhouse. On most days i open up one side of the "door" for air circulation, especially on breezy days. Most of the crispy tips is from me not acclimating it to the sun. Pics below.

Seed stratification

Hi y'all, I bought some seeds today. It's livistona chinesis, trachycarpus fortunei and archontophoenix alexandrae. I especially can't wait for the last one, its beautiful palm tree and I didn't even see it in my country at all. So it's very exciting, and I heard that it can germinate very fast. I wanted to stratificate my seeds a little and I did, but I'm afraid I went too far. Look at these seeds of livistona Omg tell me I didn't kill those seeds

Identifying the Container Ranch 2021

Playing around with some lists. Made this one of all my pots in house. Aside from some randos I picked up in Florida and got to sprout, I have identified most all of them! Granted, I had to go back through a bunch of old message and figure out what the heck @DoomsDave and others have mailed to me over the years. But even the store-boughts are not guarantees until you see how they look when they get older. Not a long list, but pretty good for this hobbyist and his little shared ranch. Adonidia merrillii Agave americana Aloe rubroviolacea(?) Aloe noideaensis Alpinia galanga Ananas comosus Archontophoenix tuckerii (2) Caryota mitis (fishtail) Chamaed…

I'm looking for some unusual ideas for an inside Palm. There won't be a huge amount of natural light but enough to make do. I already have the following indoors: Majesty Coconut Kentia Cat Areca Any other ideas on what I could plant indoors? I might add some UV lights to make it possible. I'm looking for something you wouldn't normally see grown indoors. Thoughts?

Is it really washingtonia robusta
by Lady Gaga- 2 replies

Hi, I have two Washingtonia robusta, I germinated them year ago. And they're from good source I believe, but now they have those little white threads on their leaves. I don't know, maybe it's too soon to say this, or maybe robusta has little threads too? I hope that on the first photo it is the first real leaf.

Hi everyone

Hi everyone, I'm new here. Just wanted to share with you the effects of my seeding. So two years ago in October, I germinated phoenix canariensis seeds. I also have two washingtonia robusta that germinated after two days (!) in warm water last fall. Currently, for over a week I have been waiting for kentia (howea forsteriana) to sprout, I have two seeds. I soaked them for a week in water at about 25-30 degrees, then I put them in a bag with wet soil and keep them next to a radiator where the temperature of the ground is about 30 degrees. Also I have a question, how long it usually takes howea forsteriana to germinate? I heard that it …

Palm Pot Depth Growth Rate Experiment
by floridaPalmMan- 14 replies
So I've read in multiple places (and heard from a few youtube videos for what that's worth) that pot depth is the secret to accelerated growth of palm seedlings rather than pot width. Not sure if this is well known or has already been proven/disproven. Any input would be appreciated. Anyway... This is an experiment to see the difference in growth rate and health of 3 palms purchased as seedlings at the same time and exposed to the same conditions. The three plant selected are a few silver queens I purchased off of etsy. All three are around the same height and were all germinated/planted/harvested/shipped and repotted at the same time. All came from th…

Grown from seed received from @PalmatierMeg several years ago, this and another nearly identical (same stone pot, same size) adorn either side of my garage front during the summer months but spend the winters in the conservatory. I move them in/out with a heavy-duty hand truck and tie-down strap, but they'll soon be too heavy for even that. Thanks, @PalmatierMeg. Six-inch rule for scale.

A tale of 2 C. Cataractarum
by JohnAndSancho- 4 replies

I'm starting to wonder if my little Cataractarum is a goner. I had another post where i mentioned that I used a fine "top dressing" sand thinking it'd help with soil drainage and it just plugged all the drainage in the pot. It lost a sucker, and I keep trimming the dried black ends and yellow/black leaves off of it, and every day there's more black. I did repot it and got all the sand out a week ago, didn't notice any root rot. It's big brother has been in this corner since I've had it, and all it does is grow. I've had to cut a few stalks off of the big one too, but it hasn't missed a beat. Do y'all think the little guy is salvageable? How long …

When to split up c. elegans clusters?

When should I split these guys up? I've seen this question asked before with replies like "survival of the fittest" and things like that, and I've def pulled a few dead little strugglers out - but the survivors in here are all growing like weeds and I can't help but think they'd do even better if they had more room to spread out. Would these also benefit from the @Pal Meir soil mix of bark and clay like my baby Wedds are in?

Hi everyone! I have two beautiful potted Archontophoenix since 1 year. During the summer the growth was modest, but I didn’t notice any problem. since I moved the plants indoor during the fall, the growth proceed at a faster pace but some fronds are turning quickly brown and dry. I tried to do a shower to the plants but I didn’t notice any improvement. Any tips? The soil is always moist and there’s a discrete light . Much appreciated your help

Finally got around to splitting up my 3 surviving Howeas. The one in the little white pot is going on my desk at work. I hope I'm not overpotting them too much (all 3 are in 2gallon pots), but I did mix a good amount of turface and fir bark into 2 of them. I also topcoated all of them with turface as well to hopefully prevent fungus gnats from popping up and make things a little more aesthetic. Thanks to everyone for all the tips, and please don't judge me for my messy countertop

Hi everyone, This is my first time attempting to grow a Chamaerops humilis indoors. I am battling a scale problem but aside from that I have noticed the fronds getting darker and darker green. I keep this indoors for roughly 5 months of the year. I am posting wondering how others treat this species indoors. Any tips; watering, lighting, fert would be greatly appreciated!
