Hey everyone, I need some advice about my En. Lehmannii. Have it in a good mix of soil and a tall 5 gallon plastic black pot with 60% or more of perlite and 30% cactus and palm potting mix and garden mix from Lowes. I just want to know if my New plant will Thrive! It is in a spot where the morning sun continues until 3pm with some afternoon sun here and there. My back yard has dogs but they do not eat plants. So my dog and plant are safe. Could any one tell me if I'm doing right by the plant and if it will turn green. I will bring in the plant in heavy storms if possible. I just want my plant to grow and be happy for years. Plus I have a dioon spinulosum pup with ro…

Help. Palm not growing

Hi all, I am not only new to this forum, but also to gardening activities. (I don't even know whether the palm I am writing about is Pindo, Seafortia or Imperial) I live in Buenos Aires Argentina (subtropical climate) and planted in Jan/Feb 2020 (summer) a palm into a rather big pot. I understand that palm trees in pots do not grow indefinitely. But before that, the palm was in a much smaller pot. So I expected it to grow for a certain time before it reaches its limits. What happened over the last 14 months or so: basically nothing. The spear in the middle is still in the same place, i.e. not one new leaf grew. I believe that the trunk is getting bigger, …

Dumb newbie question. I have a couple palms in soilless potting media, the turface/bark/leca. Can I add slow release palm food IE Carl Pool or regular fertilizer to this, or am I limited to just liquid? I kinda did the whole crazy newbie thing last year and bought one of everything.

Hello all. First time posting in this pots thread. I keep my outdoor palms in pots, and like adding additional plants to fill out the pot. Is this a good practice, or not due to competing of nutrients in the pot? I have 2 be majesty’s that I put in pots outside and don’t want to strain them. Below is a pic of my triangle with additional plants in the same pot. Doesn’t seem to complain...

Everyone got fed with filtered water, a drop of Super thrive, and 1/3 strength Alaska Fish Emuslion today minus the seed pots. They got water and positive reinforcement. L. Chinesis, D. Lutescenens, c. Cataractarum, Queen Palm, 2 Majesties, a C. Macrocarpa that I'm not sure is still alive, and W. Robusta that I finally took the Xmas lights off of. Probably gonna restring the Xmas lights tonight just because I'm bored.

First attempt at Cocos nucifera bonsai
by PsyPalm- 3 replies

About a week ago I picked up a small cocos nucifera from a local plant shop here in Seattle. Last night (after some deliberation and a whiskey or two) I decided to try and turn it into a bonsai piece. This is my first ever attempt at bonsai as well as my first time growing cocos nucifera so I'm prepared for disaster lol. I just wanted to share some pics of the process with you guys and see what you think My thinking is over the next few months the roots will grow down into the media of the bonsai pot, so when I remove the upper plastic sleeve I'll be able to remove the lava rock from underneath the coconut and have it be elevated above the soil on it's roots like…

Indoor seed germination question

New to seed germination indoors as I've previously just bought potted palms. I've discovered with a couple species that potted purchased palms that don't do well indoors....and die, do much better if grown from seed. I'm using baggie method and heat mats and trays with pretty good luck. My question is, when is the best time to plant them up and also to remove from any bottom heat? I don't want to "cook" the new seedlings. Are heat mats only supposed to be used to get seed to "pop"?

To repot or not to repot? That is the question
by Dimimelbourne- 1 reply

I have this golden cane palm who I keep indoors in a really bright room. It has grown incredibly fast, more than doubled in the few months I’ve had it. I repotted it perhaps 3 months ago and it looks like it could already use another upgrade! I want to encourage it to keep growing so I’m unsure if repotting it would encourage this or perhaps slow it down? Maybe it’ll focus more on growing roots or the root movement may affect its foliage growth? We’re also coming to the end of the growing season where I am as well.

Separating/repotting Areca palm cluster

Hey guys! Last night I separated a few small Areca palms from a larger cluster and potted them individually. I really like it when my palms aren't super overgrown/clumped together, I keep them very trimmed back and am trying to thin out clumps so you can really appreciate the delicate individual trunks as they start to form. Pics of palm before, after, and of the three smaller seedlings individually potted Let me know what you guys think! Cheers Loch

Please help- to split or not to split??
by Chris99- 1 follower

Please help! I’ve had this palm for a year now (I think it’s a magesty?) and I’m starting to worry about some of its issues: It’s 3 ‘trees’ in one pot. One has always been a bit poor and with 2 small leaves which have died in recent weeks, it does have a shoot coming through though, should I remove this weak tree and put it in its own pot? The 2nd tree is the largest and healthiest, has two new shoots and is the most upright and robust, but it’s always had necrosis on one of the leaves- should I cut this leaf off or just leave it until it’s really bad? The final tree in the pot is ok, relatively healthy and has two new shoots too, but has really started…

Seedling potting mix
by Keys6505- 3 followers

Awhile back I did some digging on this site in regards to looking for a good general use potting mix for palms. It seemed a lot of people here recommended simply cutting 50% turface mvp and 50% cheap generic bagged garden soil. Maybe I got my info crossed because I read tons of posts, but this mix seems to be fine for the larger pots that I keep outside but I've had some issues with smaller pots and seedlings rotting because some small pots seem to be staying wet a lot longer than others. Is this just because the garden soil I'm using is junk or is this mix just better for larger pots/plants? Any recommendations or tweaks anyone would recommend? I have some germinate…

Doesn’t happen all the time but what causes new fronds to open before spear has finished growing in height? my triple Christmas palm I’ve grown. Only indoors year around and steady grower. Typically new spears grow like normal then open but this newest one isn’t. Have seen similar on other species I’ve had.

Can I rescue? Areca?

I just moved in with my boyfriend only to discover his two 30-year old inherited palms in bad condition. I've never had palms before, so I'm not sure what to do or even if they can be saved. Still kind of confused as to what the old brown parts at the bottom are - but I want to learn! He has definitely been overwatering them, so i'm thinking there is root rot. Are they too far gone? If not, is that the only problem? I'd like to save them if possible, but I'm not sure if I can

Help - Very unhappy Ravenea palm
by Katie C- 3 replies
Hello, I have a very unhappy Ravenea palm in a pot. It's positioned near a window and is getting new fronds but all of the other fronds are turning brown and dying and one has just today completely bent in half. One of the new fronds seems to be brown in colour and is unopened. I'm not sure what the issue is with it. Some people seem to say too much water, others not enough! Any help would be much appreciated as I'm afraid soon it will be completely beyond help. I have photos but am unsure how to post them from my phone as the only option seems to be to add a URl. Thanks, Katie

Small, potted windmill palms

I have been reading this forum for days! My goal was to learn what I could to support my love of palm trees. However, I have come to the conclusion that my palms may or may not be in appropriate pots. These are two windmill palms. They spend summers outdoors and come in when it gets cold, along with my other house plants. I had planned on repotting one come spring, as there are roots visible on top of the soil. She (Nixon) was a gift from a friend, and I am really attached to her for that. She came with the name. She is in a ~12 inch self-watering pot (round, beige in pics). She came that way, so I don’t know about soil. I’ve just been staring at the roots of top thinkin…

Spindle or Alexander?
by Philly J- 9 replies

Which would be more satisfying to grow from a nursery 3 gallon? I live in zone 3b haha so the only outdoor time these guys will get will be late April to end of September and that’s it. I am successfully growing a large rivularis and multiple Lutescens outside my office in this huge 2 story atrium with skylight just offering extra humidifier action underneath every now and then (and not sure how much of an effect it’s having since it’s such a massive space. I can theoretically grow either the spindle or a single trunk Alexander into a full grown tree. Which is easier and which will be more beautiful fully grown say 10 years from now?
