Archie trouble
by Corrosion- 3 replies

Hello I ordered some archies by mailorder, took few weeks or so. I live in cold climate so I have to overwinter my palms indoors under lamps. When they arrived looked mostly okay maybe a bit beaten up but still green. I kept one outside when it was blown over several times by a strong wind gusts but I am sure it did not get any frost-no frost has been recorded in my garden yet. My personal opinion is that they dislike long delivery-being in a dark box for weeks, can it be so? Now I brought them in and one of them looks really bad, leaves drying and so. What can I do to save it? The pot is tiny maybe repot it into bigger one? I have been growing c…

Source for pots?

I'm new to this section of the forum so please forgive me for asking a dead standard question but I just bought 100 3.5" pots off of eBay and got swindled. I'm growing Chamaedorea microspadix and have seedlings in six packs now ready to pot up before the weather cools off. I know many places throw plastic pots into the trash but I was unable to track any down so I bit the bullet and ordered some from an eBay seller. They're absurdly flimsy, shallower than standard pots and nearly useless. I can delay potting up another week (temperatures expected to hit 100 later this week) but seek your recommendation so I don't wind up with more inferior product. Can you sugg…

Hyophorbe lagenicaulis Root issues

Hey everyone last year my potting skills weren’t up to par. I have learned A lot. My 5 gallon bottle lately has started to brown tip a bit. Still growing new spears just fine but as a new frond opens I cut one off. The soil on this guy has more peatmoss then some of my others. I figured he was fine. So with the. Brown tipping getting worse I put my fingers in the soil and still damp. Not soaked but prettt damp. So I decided to pull the guy right out of the pot. So to my surprise the whole pot is root bound which is good. No soil at the. Bottom at all. But half way up to the top is the bad draining peat. One large root has rotted. New roofs are growing. So there’s some bad…

Licuala Grandis soil change

Good morning/afternoon/evening to you all 🌴 I’m going to purchase a Licuala Grandis and will need to change the soil mix after doing so. I’ll grow it indoors in a pot. I found a suggestion for a soil mix on this site (Seramis, bark and Leca) but I have a few questions about it. - The plant will be in regular potting soil when I purchase it. If I repot it immediately into the mix mentioned above, will the roots be able to adjust? - How should I go about repotting it? Do I have to remove all old potting soil from the roots? Is it better to let the old soil dry out before repotting or is moist soil better? Should I do it immediately after purchasing or let it…

Indoor Bottle Palm help

Need a little help. I recently purchased two bottle palms a few months ago for the great room of my new house. They are slowly but steadily dying and I don't know what to do. The only info on the internet talks about how maintenance free they are. They get tons of southern exposure natural light from my big bay windows. They get watered weekly and I bought specific palm soil to transplant them and use a modest amount of palm specific fertilizer. I'm hoping you all can help me identify the problem. I'm having difficulty uploading pics to my post. My best guess in a mineral deficiency or disease... Thanks kindly for your help!

Hi Everyone! My sons roommate left this behind and he knows how much I love plants. I couldn’t pass this one up so I’m trying to bring it back before it’s gone. Any suggestions on how to get it to come back. I trimmed the brown off some of leaves. Repotted it and watered it 2 weeks ago tomorrow. The soil is still wet in some places according to my water meter stick after 2 weeks!!! I used Miracle Grow cactus, Palm citrus potting mix, orchard bark and perlite. I have a afternoon south facing sun and I cut off one of the limbs. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hi everyone, Since I'm still a beginner, I need your help. I want to repot these palms, properly identify them, which pot size should I chose for each of them, which soil mix should I use, etc. (the beer is standard 330ml just to get the real size of the palm, i will drink it later) 1. Howea forsteriana (Kentia palm) - I'm 99% positive about this 2. Phoenix canariensis or Phoenix dactylifera - Date palm? 3. Cycas revoluta or other Cycas? Except the Kentia which looks healthy, the other two have some yellow/brown leaves. Should I cut any of them? About the soil mix, will the same mix soil be ok for all three of …

Overwatered?
by Pashgon- 1 follower

I have had this lady palm for over a year now and then all of a sudden it started looking terrible. I was suspicious it was overwatered so I repotted it, the bottom dirt was extremely soggy which seems to confirm my suspicions. I repotted with a cactus mix and added vermiculite and perlite, and trimmed most of the dead/really poor looking fronds. But now it’s so sad looking! I left some of the rougher stuff on just because I couldn’t bare to cut it down that much. Have I done the right things? Does it just need time? This palm is very special to me and I want it looking happy again!

Source for organic material

First post here. I'm going to try make some soil mix to transplant a Dypsis Decaryi. I can get Turface MVP and perlite pretty easily for the inorganic, but other than brand-name potting soil, I don't find many of the suggested organic materials around here. I have found these two things from pet stores that look pretty close. Do either of these look good to use? Coconut Fiber here: https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/zoo-med-eco-earth-compressed-coconut-fiber-expandable-substrate-905771?cm_mmc=PSH-_-GGL-_-CAL-_-PME-_-PET-_-AQU-_-0-_-PM_GGL_FY20_SBU05_SH13_SmallAnimalBird%26ReptileSupplies_ReptileAccessories_PLA-SMRT-_-0-_-0&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIobSc…

I am new to this group. I'd like some information about this big Palm that I just bought its outdoors in Spain. I can have it in the shadow with less wind or in a place sunny with more wind. It will get hot in the summer. Which is better? Also I put the bottom of the ceramic pot with drainage balls and then with Earth and on the top with also some drainage. Thanks and events for your help and advice!

Zone 10A Patio Palms
by DCA_Palm_Fan- 3 replies

Hey all. Haven't made a post of my own in a while, so I thought I'd share some of my potted palms that I keep on my patio here in zone 10A in southern FL. PLEASE disregard the somewhat messy patio at the moment. Thank you! its a work in progress! In April of 2021 we had to move from our place which was on Maximo Point, the southern most tip of mainland Pinellas county. There, we were about a mile out into Tampa Bay on a small, less than 1/4 mile wide strip of land that ran along I-275 leading up to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. We moved about 2 miles away to an Island in Tampa bay that is probably a bit smaller than Key West, called Coquina Key. In front …

I got two pindo palms for Christmas. One seems to be doing ok. This one didn’t transplant so good. Any chance that it comes back? Was it a mistake to cut off the dead foliage? Thanks in advance. Wish I have gotten it from Texas Cold Hardy Palms. The palms I got from there never even showed signs of stress!

I just got this beauty for $30. Great deal. It is rootbound. How big of a pot do i use to repot it? Do i cut the roots coming out of the plastic pot, or cut the pot to not damage the roots when i get it out? I know they don’t like direct sunlight. She kept it indoors. Can i put it under my covered patio from spring to fall? Finally, without going crazy, what mix soil would you recommend? Thxs for the help Pat

Could someone help ID this fan palm?
by evaldas5211- 3 replies

Hello, I got this fan palm in February in a local supermarket (Lidl) and at first I thought I was getting a Washingtonia Robusta, which I really wanted to own, however now I don't think it is one. As I understand a W. Robusta has to have these strings on the leaves which mine does not... I thought it was because it's a young specimen, but I looked at many pictures online of W. Robusta and even seedlings seem to start to develop those "hairs" quite early. Thanks!

Surgery on a coconut

Let me just say that I am now officially a “palm freak”. I came back from a trip to SW Florida. (Great trip! Got lots of palm seeds and a few coconuts). I did my research and was ready to sprout this coconut, unfortunately my impatient side kicked in and I tried sawing away some of the outer husk even though I should have let the husk dry out in the sun. The coconut was closer to the surface than I thought and ended up cutting it real bad and it lost about 1/3 of its fluid. Surely it was a goner! But then a crazy idea came to mind. And so, to the best of my ability, I cleaned the area around the cut to ensure that no debris got inside the coconut and dabbed the a…

Little Roystonea Regia in pot
by spikemc- 3 replies

A few years ago, I germinated seeds of Roystonea Regia that currently measure about 1 meter tall. I have them in a semi-shade place (2 hours of direct sun). This is one of them. As we all know, these are plants for full sun, but when they were little I wanted to protect them from the direct sun until they will become stronger. I'm in 9b area (Valencia-Spain), so my idea is to grow in a pot (to move and protect in hot areas during winter) until they start to make trunk and then pass them to the ground as they will be stronger to resist the winters here (rarely below 28ºF ). My question is: With this size it would be convenient to start giving th…
