Help! Palm unhappy
by Marissa- 1 follower

I'm new to taking care of a majesty palm and my palm has started to show signs of distress over the past month. It is taking a bit of a beating from my cat, which we're trying to prevent. It is currently in a plastic pot with two 1.5 cm drainage holes on the bottom. I used palm mix soil when potting. I water about twice per week and the top layer of soil still feels slightly damp. Initially the bottom fronds had brown tips but now one also has yellow. Am I over and underwatering it?! Do I need more drainage? I have it in indirect light currently and I'm misting it gently daily. I am moving it directly into a window now, but have some concerns as we live i…

Help with an unhappy pygmy date palm
by AdamT- 2 followers

Hi everybody, I’m new to the forum but was hoping with your expertise you might be able to shed some light on what’s going on with an unhappy pygmy date palm. For the last several weeks, the lower fronds have been progressively yellowing starting at the tips of the leaflets and moving inwards, and then progressing to brown, again starting at the tips and progressing inward until the whole frond dies. You can see what I mean in the photos below. Is this pattern a tell-tale sign of anything? My usual assumption is that I’m either overwatering or underwatering, though in my experience it usually seems to be much easier to overwater. I typically water every week…

How can I protect my young 1 - 2 year old palm trees from the upcoming winter?

How can I protect my young 1 - 2 year old palm trees from the upcoming winter? I have about 100 hundred small ones (a mixture of trachycarpus fortunei, washingtonia filifera/robusta) that I germinated from seed. At the moment they all have a couple of small leaves and the washingtonias are just starting to get a very small green trunk. They were planted in 500ml plastic bottles for about a year that I got from a recycling centre for free and I got most of the dirt from a hole I dug close to my apartment. They have been inside for about 2 years with constant 20degree heat. The issue I've got now is they are too big to stay inside and I'm not sure if they could withsta…

Kentia palm has curled leaflets
by Björn- 1 follower

Hello, A year ago I bought a Kentia palm. It is a tuft of three young plants, about 1.20 m high. It is noticeable that one of the plants has a slightly different appearance: Its fronds are rather stiff, since the leaflets are slightly curled. Even older leaflets do not flatten out, so that the fronds do not hang over as elegantly. Is this a common phenomenon or is the plant sick? Could the plant perhaps have root damage? Thank you for your answers!

I tried my luck with one this growing season and it's doing ok but is going to need a repot ASAP. If it's just going to croak when I bring it inside I'm curious if it's even worth the time/money for the soil and new pot. Thanks

A tale of 2 C. Cataractarum
by JohnAndSancho- 4 replies

I'm starting to wonder if my little Cataractarum is a goner. I had another post where i mentioned that I used a fine "top dressing" sand thinking it'd help with soil drainage and it just plugged all the drainage in the pot. It lost a sucker, and I keep trimming the dried black ends and yellow/black leaves off of it, and every day there's more black. I did repot it and got all the sand out a week ago, didn't notice any root rot. It's big brother has been in this corner since I've had it, and all it does is grow. I've had to cut a few stalks off of the big one too, but it hasn't missed a beat. Do y'all think the little guy is salvageable? How long …

Outdoor Seedlings - When to worry

Question for the folks growing from seed. I have a bunch of seedlings in small containers outside on my porch and see forecasted lows of 59-61 deg F over the next couple nights. Highs will be in the Mid 70s during the day. What is a relatively safe rule of thumb temp to drag these guys inside? Without listing all the palm types they range from 9a to 10b

by PatPalm- 4 replies

Hello palmtalk I have a kentia palm that started to exhibit yellow spotting I water once a week with Florida tap water. Soil Moisture detector reads on the dryer side. House is 70-85 F, 55-70 RH. Gets plenty of light from south facing window It did have spider mites once but I cleaned them all off i have two other kentia palms that aren’t showing these signs Any idea what this could be? I’ve read it could be bacterial.

Hi! I bought a Dypsis lutenscens two monts ago. It was small and it came in a 17 cm/2L (I believe it's 7 inches/0.5 gallons aprox). I repotted it into a 26 cm/7L (10 inches/1.6 gallons). It doubled it's height and the roots are coming out of the drainage hole already. I also dislike the potting mix I used, it doesn't drain well enough. I learned a lot about soil mix recipes here and I'm now mixing it myself. All I can find is that Areca palms like to be a bit root bound and to repot eery 2-3 years but I don't think I should let any plant with the roots coming out of the drainage hole. What do you think? Should I repot it now or wait? What size would you recommend? I don…

Root-pruning Chamaerops humilis?
by SeasideRooftop- 4 replies
Hi everyone, I have a small c. humilis that had been growing in a 18 liter ( about 4.7 gallon) pot. I recently repotted it to a 42 liter pot (11 gallon) because he was starting to push up out of his pot. When I did this I saw the roots had become much bigger than I thought at the bottom and were starting to circle around on the sides. Sorry I didn't take any pics during the process to show you. I am attaching a before and after. At this rate, I suppose I will need to repot it again next year. I could go up to about 60 liters but that will be it. I am surprised, I thought c.humilis were slow-growing, I didn't expect root development like this. I am in…

Spindle Palm?

Hi all, bought this palm as Hyophorbe verschaffeltii last November. Please can someone confirm whether this is what it says it is? I have seen pics of young spindle palms and the base of them looks almost black. I also saw a pic of a Pseudopheonix sargentii seedling yesterday, and it looked the spitting image of this one. Thanks

I've been storing all of my 3gal potted minors in my basement for the winter, but in years past I think I may have waited longer than needed to bring them back outside. I'd like to get them out as soon as possible where I know they will be much happier, but I'm worried that any remaining freezes could get to their roots and harm the plants. Does anyone have experience or know what temperatures potted minors can withstand? Here's my forecast for the remainder of February:
