Rewarding indoor palms
by John in Andalucia- 9 replies

Calyptrocalyx albertisianus has all the hallmarks of a robust ornamental, performing effortlessly in my indoor palm ranch. Fresh seed germinate after a couple of weeks, with subsequent growth rate seemingly 'unrivalled'. They also put on a colour show from 'day one'. The leaves don't appear sensitive to the usual spotting, yellowing or brown tips suffered by so many other palms; they have a stiff, parchment-like feel to them, which probably helps. I've raised these seedlings in a humidity chamber with bottom heat, but frankly, I feel that with summer here, these can continue growing indoors without any special care and hopefully not suffer any setbacks. Wish me luck! …

Hi! I have kentia and areca palms in pots. I have already split the areca palms last year when I bought them, and the kentia palms are a recent purchase that I haven’t repotted yet. The arecas probably more than doubled in size from when I got them. I had previously tried to grow areca and kentia palms from seeds, but I had no success. The areca palms were cheap (3.3 EUR for 1x13 cm pot with a cluster of ~12 plants 30 cm tall), the kentias were more expensive (20 EUR for 19 cm pot with a cluster of ~7 plants 80 cm tall). I understand that these plants can grow into fairly large trees that aren’t suitable for apartments, but what are my best options for keeping t…

Very sick Kentia Palm - help please

I'm a novice palm owner and my Kentia, who's only been with me six weeks, is looking really unwell. I'd really appreciate your advice... Essentially he looked great when he arrived from the garden centre. I thought I was careful not to over-water. Over the first couple of weeks, he slowly started to slump, with the different stems collapsing at different angles. I staked him as a result. At the same time, black spots began to appear on the leaves. Some leaves died entirely, and I cut them back. The black spots keep appearing though. They seem to appear within the fronds rather than at the tips. He's indoors next to a wind…

First new palm from a new local nursery
by Rickybobby- 9 replies

Hey everyone found about this new local nursery. Massive commercial greenhouse /nursery. Like everyone up here they get tractor trailer shipments of pre ordered palms and extras and keep them until it warms up enough. Anyway these guys care deeply and I should have taken a photo of the palm section. Just awesome. 14 foot coconuts to 3 gallon anything. Same place I posted the flowering roebellini. So my first palm for the pool this year is this nice 7 gallon with 3 adonidias. I’m hoping I don’t over water this one and keep it for a few years !

Kentia seedlings in leca

I recently picked up a cluster (20-25) of howea seedlings and separated them into numerous small pots and decided to take a shot at growing them in leca. I wanted to try out a few different semi-hydro pot/container styles since it's my first time growing these in leca and I wanted to see if some things work better than others. In the picture from left to right we have: -Lechuza deltini mini filled with lechuza pon and topped with leca -White ceramic 4" pot with leca in plastic liner -White ceramic 3" pot with leca in plastic liner -4" terra cotta pot with leca submerged in marble water reservoir -Clear 500ml beaker with pure leca, no plastic…

Finally got around to splitting up my 3 surviving Howeas. The one in the little white pot is going on my desk at work. I hope I'm not overpotting them too much (all 3 are in 2gallon pots), but I did mix a good amount of turface and fir bark into 2 of them. I also topcoated all of them with turface as well to hopefully prevent fungus gnats from popping up and make things a little more aesthetic. Thanks to everyone for all the tips, and please don't judge me for my messy countertop

My trachy seedlings have always looked a complete mess but they are slowly declining except one of the seedlings seems to be doing ok and working on its 3rd strap leaf and the hybrid (biggest one) just opened that new leaf and it just started pushing out and its already turning brown like what gives?

Help with Trachy
by Tom Ace- 9 replies
Hi! I'm worried about my Trachy. The leaves recently started to go dark brown-black, working from the bottom up. Originally I thought that it wasn't getting enough light, but it has really spread quickly. Past couple of weeks has seen 8-10 fronds darken and dry up. Please see pics. What should I do? Was planning on planting out in May. I want to keep it healthy! Note* I had a second trachy in which all fronds turned dark brown when I first brought it inside in November. I had to trim off all of them and leave the spear. That one is growing decently now. Ideas? Thank you!

Kentia palm germination tips
by Chester B- 1 follower

I've got 20 kentia palm seeds that I would love to have some success with germinating. For whatever reason Kentias are nearly impossible to find around here. The cheapest I've seen is $400 for a 3'-4' tree! I've been looking around and haven't seen specific tips for successful germination. Temp? Baggy vs pots, pre-soak? Strip the husk? Scarification?, etc? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

New licuala grandis, how does she look?
by Palmistry- 9 replies

Hi!! So I have a new licuala grandis that I am absolutely in love with. I live in NYC, so I have kept the humidifier running next to her and she sits in a bright room, but receives only indirect light. I’ve been wanting to repot her with the Pal Meir soil mix, especially from what I’ve been reading on here but am anxious to do so given that it arrived only a few days ago. My plan is to let it settle in and then repot in a couple months (maybe in early June). The plant looks like it came in regular potting soil. I am posting pictures of the leaves. Overall the plant looks bright and healthy but I recently noticed some yellow spots and small brown holes emerging o…

Watering Palms

I'm just curious to know is it ok to water palms on the leaves, Like using a shower setting on the hoes and spraying the plants and soil because when I water my palms I always try and be super careful and only wet the soil and it takes sooooooo long to water each and every palm because I can't just water them altogether at the same time. If theirs a better solution to watering I'm all ears

Hello there! I just purchased this adorable Majesty Palm from Lowe’s, last evening. I inspected it what I thought was thoroughly, all of the fronds seem to be in perfect condition and I honestly didn’t notice any spotting whatsoever. That is why I chose this particular plant. However this morning, I come into my office to discover that some fronds are almost completely eaten and there are large holes in others as well as these yellow/black spots and tiny light green spotting... I can find absolutely no bugs, no residue, no webs, please help me! I’ve searched everywhere for advice!

For 10 years unsuccessful germination of coconut
by Ilovepalm- 1 follower

For 10 years I have been unsuccessfully trying to sprout a coconut palm from a nut. Every time the nuts turn moldy. I have already tried all possible sprouting methods available on the Internet, as well as from this forum. I even rinsed these nuts with washing powder before putting them in zip bags. I always soaked in warm water, then they had 100% humidity and 30 Celsius temperature. But they always mold and do not sprout. Now, I bought 4 coconuts and silence for three weeks.

Help! White fungus on my seedling!
by MoldyKingCoCo- 9 replies
So I have sprouted a coconut palm and it was doing well for the first few days. But now the seedling is covered in a white fuzzy fungus, and the coconut also has a few patches of it as well. I am using the plastic bag method for germination due to the fact that the coconut is without its husk. So I can't really lower the humidity or the sprout will die right? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!!

I was cleaning out my garage, and I came across 2ea, maybe 5-10# bags of 1" lava pieces... I think these were meant for a gas BBQ ,but for some reason never used... Would these be worth using in a potting mix?... Otherwise they'll probably go in the trash..Thanks, Butch

Potted coconut soil mixture
by Rickybobby- 9 replies
This has been a tough one for. Was using promix hp with sand. The sand would just turn to muck and the water would sit there. I’ve thought of going to our family farm and getting sandy soil from there but many pesticides etc have been used in the area and I worry it will hurt the palm. I did worry because my original soil mix was rotting the very small top roots growing out of the trunk so I took the coco out of the pot. The main roots look very white and healthy. So I added in some bark nuggets wood mulch and pro mix. Now the Water drains through very well. Anyone else have any ideas for a potted coconut. Thanks

Here’s my yearly photo of the palms by the pool. As you can see the trees are budding not green yet but the weather has been fantastic. 28c here today. The palms have bee. Outside acclimating for two weeks already. We swam last night so we are officially 2 weeks earlier than anything previous. Love it! So glad to have the palms outside. I do keep some of the smaller ones in the palm room full time (for now) but thought I’d share left to right wodyetia bifurcata 15g Hyophorbe lagenicaulus 7g and bismarkia nobilis 7g

Question about Phoenix canariensis
by Lady Gaga- 9 replies

Hi. I germinated Phoenix seeds around 3 years ago, and I have one quite big palm tree from them. But I started to worried, cause last time it doesn't grow at all and even if so, the leaves don't look like typical Phoenix leaves. I mean, they are not so sticky, not so many of them. There are big spaces between the "fingers" of the palm tree. So may question is, is everything OK with my palm tree or maybe this is some different kind of Phoenix?

Phoenix push-out in pots?
by Marc- 9 replies
- 1.6k views
Can one effectively prune phoenix roots and what is the best strategy for doing that? I have a number of phoenix in large pots (e.g., 25G plus) and unlike most other families, phoenix will grow roots so aggressively that they will lift the entire palm, root base, soil and all right out of the pot such that it's no longer aesthetic. I'm attaching two photos below that show this. I think it was in a David Lesser book that I saw a photo at Versailles with many dozens of date palms in pots, i.e., I'd like to keep these in pots of the same size but this would require aggressive root pruning strategies. Does anyone have any words of wisdom? The species I've got in mind are…

New mule palm

Just went by Tallahassee, Florida and went by a nursery and bought a Mule palm. I was really looking for a Pindo palm but this will work as well hopefully. Does anyone know what type of slow release fertilizer is used here and in other pots? I never can find the green kind around these local stores. See last picture for the type of fertilizer I'm talking about.
