Desktop Palm 1 2

Hello. I live in Massachusetts and we’ve already had some snow and 10 degree days. (Fahrenheit) I was wondering if there is a trunked palm tree that can grow in a smaller pot maybe about 8 inches or below in diameter. I was hoping to see if there was a good trunked palm species that is easy to care for and is not poisonous to dogs that can go on a desk. Maybe even on the cold hardier side. I also heard that some palm trees like buying from Home Depot or a large store that has them can bring bugs into the house. I’ve so far only seen pony tail palm trees. Completely off topic but my favorite palm tree is the sabal palm that grows in Virginia Beach or Myrtle beach. My favor…

Washingtonia Robusta in pot- Tips/Tap Root, Watering 1 2

Hello everyone! Its been a little while since I've been on PT. I've got a few questions about Tap Roots and watering my Washingtonia Robusta "Seedling". Not sure if you'd still call it a Seedling though. Haha. I've kept my small little W.Robusta in my West/South-West facing bay window for many months now (since August 2015). Its done quite well, and has not complained. Its thrived this winter even with our often times limited sunlight duration (NW Ohio). Since August its put out 2 large leaves, and another has begun in the center. After arriving here from Nevada I potted it in a Powerade bottle. And there its been since. Its been doing phenomenal in my book. I would…

First Palm Tree, Need Advice 1 2

So I bought my very first sabal palmetto and it's about 3 years old, I'll be growing it inside for the majority of the time so it can get a bit bigger so no animals outside will snack on it and nobody runs over it with four-wheelers, I do need tips because I'm a bit lost so for starters I don't know if the pot I put it in was a good choice because its a very big pot and I only put it in a big pot because I thought about future proofing so it wouldn't need to be repotted for a long time but it seems to take a very long time for the water to dry out secondly I think I made a mistake buying miracle grow succulent and palm soil because it has terrible aeration so I'm not sure…

Is this a Chamaedorea Elegans "Bella"? 1 2

Hello everyone! Today while at a local department store I was browsing around the Garden section and I spotted a couple tiny little palms. I instantly thought "Could this be a Chamaedorea Elegans "Bella")? But, I wasn't sure and I'm still not entirely sure of what it is. Right then and there in the store I got on my phone and undertook a bit of "research" and looked up pictures of C. Elegans and compared them, I visited the growers website, scanned the UPC code, and etc. The specimens for sale don't provide any information on their sales tags as to what they are. The grower doesn't provide any real information on them either and only refers to them as "Foilage", which doe…

Licuala Ramsayi soil & water preferences 1 2
by David_Sweden- 1 follower

My main question would be: For palms that normally live in swamps (of which I have Licuala Ramsayi, Licuala Peltata var Sumawongii and a Lipstick Palm), I would assume they are impossible to overwater and can stand permanently with the whole root soaked in water and liking it, and don't care about the aeration of soil, so that e g clay or densely packed peat would work great, since they (at least the Licualas) have aerial roots, which I assume supply the root system with oxygen properly even if the whole soil is under water? However I found two ten year old threads here and here with clear indications the do NOT like being permanently soaked in water, and even are ra…

Geonoma macrostachys 1 2

I recently purchased 30 Geonoma macrostachys seeds from RPS that were pre-germinated and ended up receiving 35. To me, this one of the prettiest Geonomas so i thought i’d give it a try. As most of them had already pushed a first leaf, i decided to pot them up in 0,25l containers with a 70/30 mixture of fine pine bark (2-8mm) and Seramis. Perhaps it might have been better to wait, as a couple of them seem to think about dampening off already. In retrospect i would have preferred germinating them in individual pots and thus avoiding transplanting them at this size. I use Saprol as a fungicide at the moment as i it’s available locally, but am interested in other options. …

Kentia palms. Are they really good indoor palms? 1 2
by sashaeffer- 1 follower

Ok, have done searches both here in forums and online. Kentia palms (both species) are usually mentioned as one of the top 5 indoor palms to have. I have a "3 try rule" with palms and will throw in the towel after that but that generally is on species that have little known about them as indoor palms. Kentia palms are gorgeous but crazy expensive to buy here in Nebraska. I'm lucky in that even mail order or when I make road trips to California they are a dime a dozen and pretty cheap to buy. I have tried at least 10? times of various sizes. Some single, others 3/4 in a pot. When left outside in dappled light here in the summer they get very ample rain and…

So as the days get shorter and cooler, I eventually will not be able to keep my potted palms outside. I am wanting to get a smaller growing light for my potted palms and other plants as well, I was thinking of getting this one since it is a reasonable size. Do you think it will allow the palms to still grow throughout the winter well and get the light they need? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CJ98X5C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_0aPVBb8YMYN3G

Dypsis plumosa -- sprouting seeds 1 2

Howdyall, spring is coming soon hip hip hooray! And, my thoughts turn to lust - palm lust. Some of you may have received some free Dypsis plumosa seed I sent a while back. I kept a few, threw them in a pot and they germinated. Here's one of the babies in my hairy, average size man's mitt. Note the long root, that dives straight down, then jogs a bit where it hit the bottom of the pot. Handle them with care, don't break that root and don't knock the seed off the plant. They don't always die when that happens, but it sets them back. So, I hope some of you have gotten some of yours to sprout! Konstantin, how are yours over there in Greece? I know I sent o…

I love Howea forsteriana (have three solitary ones), and just purchased a Howea belmoreana. I have read that H. belmoreana does not do well in containers. Is this true? Any cultural differences between the two species? Do you prefer one to the other, why? Thanks in advance.

I have tortured this seed for years now. 1 2

I grew this Lyto Weddell with a couple of others from Sydney grown seed, a few years ago. The others died after one or two leaves emerged, of rot. They were too wet, the potting mix was cheap and did not drain well enough. So, over a year ago I repotted this one into a very fast draining premium potting mix. (No, not fine bark 2, seramis 1) and it has not changed. So apart from insufficient drainage, what else would cause this? I have looked really hard for insect type pests, and have not found any. And the roots look good too. I was just going to give it away when it looked good, we have three other big ones in the ground doing well, …

The soil mixes the pros use 1 2

I thought it might be interesting to gather some information about what the pros use: Tobias Spanner, the owner of Palme Per Paket, published the book "Das Palmen-Kulturhandbuch" 1999. He recommends these soil mixes: 30% {60%} Peat based soil mix or limed peat (pH 6) or coconut substrate (e g "Kokohum") 20% {10%} fine lime-free clay soil or loam 25% {15%} quartz sand 0-4mm 25% {15%} other mineral for drainage: pumice, perlite, vermiculite, LECA, Lavalit (crushed lava stone), Seramis (porous clay granulate from Germany), stone wool (such as rockwool) Up to 15% {20%} of pine barch humus or loose compost may be mixed in The figures with…

If you're cold, they're cold, bring them inside...

Lots of rain last week, saw there was a potential for frost this week, so I spent Sunday afternoon bringing them in. Washed pots and saucers, drained them all from being waterlogged all week, and topped up on soil for a couple. Every year I tell myself there is no more room, and every year I end up with a couple more pots... Library (only west-facing window) Bedroom (north facing) Living room (north facing) Was quite blustery last night, had some brief sleet and more rain, so I guess I made the right choice. Just looked at the weather again and we have a full on Freeze Warning tonight! (Guess I better go over to my friend'…

Majesty Palm Outdoors in Zone 8b Questions

I recently purchased a Majesty Palm from Lowe's and am planning to have it outside only during the spring and summer months here in Myrtle Beach. First off, I am not sure really where to put it. Some sources I see are saying that they like a lot of sunlight and others are saying that they like more shade, so I'm not really sure. I've got one area that I think could be a pretty good contender, I've attached pictures of this area. It is a south facing area with a very good bit of protection from wind. I'd say it gets no sun from sunrise to about 1 or 1:30 in the afternoon, but then it gets full sun from then on until sunset (it isn't on the south side of the house, but it i…

The Lyto which would not grow bigger

This is the story of the weakest of ten Lytocaryum weddellianum seedlings. In 2013 all other seeds germinated between April 01 and 26, only one small seed germinated much later on May 8 after 49 days (cf. pic #1). And this seedling N°1308 would not grow like its siblings and stayed small though it was the only single seedling which was planted since the beginning in a large Ø12xH12 cm clay pot (cf. pic #2). (The other five singles N°1301 to N°1305 had only tiny Ø8xH9cm clay pots.) So I checked the roots and was very worried (pic #3). The soil mix could not be the the reason because the other Lyto weddells were planted in the same mix. So I guessed it might be tha…
