transplanting Pelagodoxa going from ground (in Zone 10B) to container to Greenhouse in 2021. I need advice!!
by BamaPalmer- 9 replies

I have a question for those of you who have taken an in-ground palm out of the ground and successfully containerized it. A Pelagodoxa henryii that was purchased in a 1-gal size 5 years a go from Jeff at Floribunda palms is really beginning to look beautiful at about 7-ft tall and each frond getting larger and more impressive. We will be moving out of the Greater Fort Lauderdale area next Spring, (after 41 years,) to Central Alabama (possibly Zone 8B,) and I am constructing a greenhouse (up there) to accommodate several of my favourite palms (like this specimen,) and a few tropical fruiting trees. Since I have the "luxury" of time till the move, I wanted to extricat…

Dumb Lighting Question/Palm Recommendations

So, I have a largeish south facing window in my office. I'm sure the glass has at least some degree of UV protection since the building was built in 2018. There is no shade. Would this be considered full sun? Also open to suggestions on seedlings I could stick in the window. I've got some year or so old A. Tuckerii seedlings that have been on my patio I could bring to work, but I'd like to fill the windowsill. I cooked some d. Lutescens and an Aloe Vera just to give y'all an idea of how much sun this window gets. Currently battling sugar ants and their accompanying aphids too, based on all the little tiny sticky specks I see on everything other than the snake…

Seedlings and fertilizer
by Alcibiades- 9 replies

When do you start fertilizing your seedlings? Some say that you have to wait for the palm to repell the seed. I usually start fertilizing my seedlings when the second leaf emerges. I use a highly dilluted fertilizer though (1/4) . Is there a general rule of thumb?

Stink water 2.0

Not gonna lie, I'll probably repost this in a busier subforum. But here we go. I bought more Alaska fish emulsion, some humic acid/liquid seaweed, chelated iron, and Bonide systemic insecticide. Am I stupid or is this a good mix? Did I spend too much money? Will this be the anabolic steroid I'm hoping for?

Good organic pottasium source for my potting mix
by Palmfarmer- 9 replies

I make my own potting mix with 1 part coco or peat, 1 part compost 1/2 part perlite then I add some bloodmeal for Nitrogen, Bonemeal for phosphorus and for pottasium I was supposed to use greensand, but its super expensive here. Anyone know an alternative I could use?

Unhealthy rivularis

I need to preface this by saying I brought this guy to my office from a big box store when it was, no joke, -36F with the wind. The car was previously warm and ready. Backed up to the sliding doors, 7 foot fronds double bagged from top to bottom, but when it had to spend the few seconds outside in that -36, some wind got through several seams in the bag and hit many leaves. I immediately got its temperature back to tropical but dry in my car for the short trip to its new home. Have cared for it religiously since then with non stop LED, 8 gallon soaks into its 4 gallon bucket every other day with distilled water only, and am humidifying and misting it. Here is what is…

collected rain water always the best?
by sashaeffer- 9 replies

Any negatives to using collected rain water for watering potted palms (mostly indoor) I think it's always been assumed that collected rain water is what is best for watering plants/palms indoors but wondered if there is any chance of that there could be issues (environmental contamination) that could affect the palms watered with it. I know when collected from downspouts it's coming off the roof and with so many roof types out there in the world didn't know if asphalt roofing materials does more harm than good. Any experiences from members out there?

Help needed with a Phoenix Roebelenii

Hello all, new member here, great Forum. Proud owner of a Mexican Palm and a Queen Palm, both doing quite well (see attached pics of those two). Recently acquired a Dwarf Date, and ...she isn't doing all that well. Repotted her from her nursery pot, leaving around 2-1/2" of new soil around the perimeter of the soil/root ball she arrived in. Currently watering every other day. She is getting full sun from around 10AM-6PM, otherwise in shade. Temps here are in 90's during day, high 50's-mid 60's at night. Dry climate, I am in the high desert. Her fronds seem to be turning dry and a blue-pale color. See photos. Suggestions ? Thanks in advance. Here are th…

Grow bags

Has anyone used these type of grow bags to grow palms ? I have thought about using them to put climate tender palms in the ground then dig them back up before the first cold snap. Thinking i can enjoy the palm in the landscape instead of the container ranch. https://www.greenhousemegastore.com/containers-trays/bags-pouches/root-pouch-grey-fabric-pot-3-4-year?returnurl=%2fcontainers-trays%2fbags-pouches%2f With a regular nursery pot im afraid roots could possibly get thru the drain holes, so when i pull the palm back out , it could get root damage and possible death. Just throwing this out as an idea, anyone's opionion or pros and cons would be appreciated…

Thought I'd share my progress in germinating robusta seeds. I am 40/40 in my first attempt germinating these. They are on my balcony which faces north, but I have a grow light which is kept on them at all times 6/23: peeled 40 seeds and placed in a solo cup of water -replace water daily 6/28: place seeds in a casserole dish with seed starter potting mix, make sure sand is damp but not soaked, cover with saran wrap and place on top of TV cable box 7/3: plant first 15 sprouts in old water bottles with seed starter potting mix and sand, left and a tray and bottom watered 7/8: plant 15 more sprouts 7/12: plant 10 more sprouts, largest…

Livistona chinensis issues

My livistona chinensis is having issues. Not sure what the cause is. I had left them both outside during a light freeze, but they were up against the house and probably didnt event experience such temperatures. This was over a month ago, and i doubt its causing it. The other thing is that they were inside for 5+ days for the Christmas freeze event. The issue is that the lower fronds have died, and now the upper fronds are slowly turning brown starting from the end of the fronds and going towards the petiole. I will post pics soon.

My baby has been at my dads in zone 7a. Cold zone 7a for the winter where it has room to grow very tall and get a lot of light. It’s doing very well today is 12c very warm for January. With climate change it has gotten warmer and warmer every year. I sold my snowmobile this year due to this. Crazy for Canada. Here is a few pics of it outside and a video I made about the area

Majestic Palms in Pots

Hi All, I've had majestic palms in pots for a year now sitting on the balcony. They've all gained some height, but all consistently have brown fronds like the photo attached. I've used a regular potting mix and add a palm fertiliser a few times a year. I generally water once a week during the colder months and twice a week during summer. Soil always feels more on the drier side rather than soggy. I can't work out what's causing it, over watering, under watering? I have pots at either end of the house and they all have the same brown fronds. I was thinking to take them out and re-pot back into the same 400mm pots adding some wetting agent and extr…

I told the other half that a make shift shelf in my shade house had rusted and collapsed onto an orchid. They then had to come see how I'd dealt with the problem. I had of course reshuffled pots about and filled the space with newly potted up Dypsis leptocheilos seedlings that arrived via mail earlier in the week. I was told I'd moved the cyclamen to the wrong positions and that I had far to many palms and was banned from getting any more as there is no room to walk! I guess I can only get sun hardy palms now. Any way this is what my container ranch looks like. I think I actually have a bit of room to play with. It is really difficult not to h…

Improvising for the winter

I am trying to design a mini indoor greenhouse for my potted tropicals. I won't be at home during the day and with the current heating costs in Europe, leaving the heating on for my plants is not an option. I have about 20 pots and thankfully most are quite small so I was thinking of making a small indoor greenhouse which could stand on a big sturdy table. About a meter long and half meter wide. The pots should all fit on that table. I am planning to construct a basic greenhouse, basically just a box with a wooden frame and sheets of clear plastic. Over it I will hang grow lights since the light from the window may not be enough. For heating I will put the pots over heat …

Hi! I'm new here. I bought a small Phoenix canariensis 3 weeks ago, my intention is to plant it on the ground when it gets bigger. It came in a small plastic nursery pot and I left it there for a week so it could get used to it's new home and then repotted to a bigger terracotta pot. I live in Gijon, north of Spain and our weather is mild, rarely goes below 0°C during winter and is usually 19-23°C during summer, but it rains quite a lot. There are lots of Phoenix canariensis around, in parks, yards... My palm is on the porch, having full sun during the afternoon, and protected from the wind but not the rain. It looked pretty healthy except for some black spots in the base…

The drawback of shallow containers
by Sabal Steve- 9 replies

Often, I hear that a certain palm will need a deep container; like Bismarckia for example. But, I've grown Bismarkia, or other palms where deep containers were recommended, and the palms did just fine in the shallow containers. Is the seedling more likely to spiral, and grow inverted, throwing the first leaves downward or to the side? What is the benefit of the deeper container?

Indoor seed germination question
by sashaeffer- 2 followers

New to seed germination indoors as I've previously just bought potted palms. I've discovered with a couple species that potted purchased palms that don't do well indoors....and die, do much better if grown from seed. I'm using baggie method and heat mats and trays with pretty good luck. My question is, when is the best time to plant them up and also to remove from any bottom heat? I don't want to "cook" the new seedlings. Are heat mats only supposed to be used to get seed to "pop"?

Spindle or Alexander?
by Philly J- 9 replies

Which would be more satisfying to grow from a nursery 3 gallon? I live in zone 3b haha so the only outdoor time these guys will get will be late April to end of September and that’s it. I am successfully growing a large rivularis and multiple Lutescens outside my office in this huge 2 story atrium with skylight just offering extra humidifier action underneath every now and then (and not sure how much of an effect it’s having since it’s such a massive space. I can theoretically grow either the spindle or a single trunk Alexander into a full grown tree. Which is easier and which will be more beautiful fully grown say 10 years from now?
