Neem oil or Hydrogen peroxide

I have about 18 seedlings that I have brought in for the winter and I am noticing an increasing amount of fungus gnats crawling around in the soil. I am trying to avoid scraping the top layer of soil off and adding sand because some of these palms are just beginning to develop roots. I was wondering if I should saturate the soil with a Neem oil mix or Hydrogen peroxide. I have mostly Needles, Trachy F, Trachy W, and Sabal Palmettos under a grow light in 14" cones. Thank you!

Small, potted windmill palms

I have been reading this forum for days! My goal was to learn what I could to support my love of palm trees. However, I have come to the conclusion that my palms may or may not be in appropriate pots. These are two windmill palms. They spend summers outdoors and come in when it gets cold, along with my other house plants. I had planned on repotting one come spring, as there are roots visible on top of the soil. She (Nixon) was a gift from a friend, and I am really attached to her for that. She came with the name. She is in a ~12 inch self-watering pot (round, beige in pics). She came that way, so I don’t know about soil. I’ve just been staring at the roots of top thinkin…

Kentia palm - is it over-potted?

I bought Kentia palm in 22cm pot (the photo in a box). I repotted the Kentia into 33cm pot as the original pot was broken. I haven't touch much the root and kept the surrounding old soil. Only put new soil around it. I used Plant mix (Kings House Plant Mix - 10l | Compost and Mixes | Kings) about 8 litre. It has been only one day since repotting. I am a bit scared if I used too big pot. It seems like more pale and yellowish leaves with wet top soil. How long should I wait to see if the top soil and deep soil dry? Should I leave it outside (under the sun with roof) to dry or bring the plant inside? I will use indoor 43cm cache-pot.…

Cold drafts
by David_Sweden- 10 replies

I've read sometimes that some palms (and some other trees like ficuses) are sensitive to cold (and warm) drafts. I'm wondering if anyone knows more about this, and if it can be an issue here? The problem is that one of the two windows on the north side of my apartment was broken so that it has to be sealed for 2 months while they manufacture a new one. It also has windows on the south side. The only other window on the north side is where my (semi-)shade-loving big palms are: Kentia, Rhopalostylis Baueri, Licuala Ramsayi and Licuala Peltata. It's in the middle of summer here now and I live on the top floor (attic) so I have to keep windows open at least during daytime…

Kentia Palm - spots on leaves

Hi All .... I'm new to the forum, and new to palm growing (and even house plants in general), and would like some advice. In late Sept 2020, I received by mail an approximately 4 ft tall kentia palm (technically 2 stalks) in a 3 gallon grower's pot from a nursery in CA. My new kentia palm, Sir Reginald the Green (Reggie), will be kept indoors year round here in Phoenix, AZ. The palm looked healthy upon arrival, and still does for the most part 2 months later. However, I'm starting to notice a few small changes, and would like to address any potential issues before they become larger problems. I've included a photo of Reggie just a few days after received. …

Palm identification help

Hi All, I'm new to the forum, and to palm trees--though I enjoyed looking at them when I lived in LA. I currently live in Maryland, and in terms of outdoor gardening, I stick exclusively to native and edible plants. So inside my house, it's always nice to be able to grow some slightly more exotic plants. Anyway, long story short, yesterday I purchased my first palm. I don't have the greenest thumb, and what success I've had with growing plants in pots, I attribute entirely to having done fairly thorough research into which species and cultivars are hardy, and which are not. I decided I wanted a palm for a slightly dim (though by no means dark) section of the living r…

Scale on hand-me-down palms... can I save them or nah?

My mom is simplifying her plant collection and gave me two of what I think are parlor palms. My dad had accidentally put them directly into the sun after a long winter, so they did get sunburnt... but you know, that can be dealt with. We discovered after the fact, though, that they have huge amounts of SCALE. She’d had no idea and feels terrible. What do you think, are these past help? If not, is it safe to trim off the worst branches and then use Dawn on the rest over the course of a few weeks? If so, should I quarantine them away from my other plants, since I so far do not have scale in my own garden? Idk how readily it spreads outside. Or do we just…

Help with new L. Ramsayi
by JohnAndSancho- 10 replies

Maybe I'm just paranoid, but should I be worried about this guy? It arrived on Thursday, and based on what I've read on here on other Licuala, it's potted in a mix 50% clay 50% bark - (loose, fast draining and keeps moisture) - soil is super moist, I give it as much humidity as I can indoors. I keep it out of HVAC drafts, it's under a grow light, and I gave it a warm shower this morning. Should I just repot it in normal potting soil? Is it just going through an adjustment phase? I hate that I have such great results with cheap palms that I neglect, and this one looks so miserable in just 3 days. Parts of it feel dry, parts of it feel soggy and it's my first …

Hi! I already posted about my coconut in this topic - But I decided to make a seperate topic to document updates on my coconut. My coconut was bought from a local supermarket (Plodine) on 17th May 2023. The coconut was perfect when I bought it, but unfortunately the day I bought it it was unusually windy and cold for that time of the year. The coconut suffered damage shortly after as I was exiting the store. One leaf was broken and it’s still on support, other leaves soon after had some browning. I kept it in my apartment in a not so bright location in its original soil for the time being. I repotted it on May 21 first into a plastic (possi…

Washingtonia robusta dying

Hi everybody! I got this palm a year ago and it was doing great in the beginning, but after some time leaves started drying out faster than new ones grew. Here is a picture from a year ago: And now... I had a problem with bugs at one point, so I treated it with neem guard oil which got rid of the bugs. Aside from loosing leaves even the new ones look pale compared to normal. I tried adding "phostrogen" to the water a few times but it doesn't appear to help. Obviously I'm doing something wrong but I can't figure out what. I live in Dubai, day temperatures vary from around 20C(68F) during winter to more than 45C(113F) during summe…

Hello everyone, do any of you know what these black spots growing on my coconut palm are? They look like bacterial colonies to me. So far they are only only on the palms and do not seem to be causing any damage. What do you all think I should do to get rid of them?

Wodyetia Bifurcata trouble

Necrotic looking, soft. In a medium of coir/perlite/orchid bark. Black started a few days ago and by tomorrow, I cut off about 20 leaves in that time to try and stave off in vain whatever was happening. By tomorrow I will have lost the entire frond to black. Went outside today for the first time this season as we are so far North I couldn’t do it before today. When I pulled it out to check the roots there was some rot but not the level I was expecting and I have seen palms make it through way worse root rot. The spear is still growing and the damage has been limited to this entire frond and to one set of bifurcated leaves on another frond (the ones closest to the tr…

New Kentia palm. When to repot and separate?
by Nick215- 2 followers

Hi. I received a Kentia palm for Christmas and am very excited. It came as a cluster and is a bit bigger than anticipated. I prefer the look of single specimens, but don't to kill my new plant. Based upon what I read in other palm talk threads, my plan is to do the following: 1) Let it settle into it's new home for a few months by leaving it in the original nursery pot. 2) In a month of two, carefully separate the plants and repot them. I was thinking of putting each in 1 gallon nursery pots. Does that seem like a reasonable approach? In addition, how much attrition might I likely see? There appear to be 7 plants in this cluster. If I lost one or two, it …

Help with a Transplanted Potted Sabal Palm :)
by Another_Conquistador- 9 replies

I already have a Majesty and Cat Palm that have been doing great so I’m familiar with the beginner species inside. I’m from South Florida and moved to West Georgia and I’m very common with Sabal Palms, their care, flowering, fruit, et cetera. But I’m not familiar with potting and am told it’s very difficult. I got back from a trip to Savannah & Tybee Island, and I wanted to come back with a Sabal Palm. I was walking in Bonaventure Cemetery, and some workers cleaning around a Mausoleum pulled one up roots and all so I took it. I’m enclosing a photograph of it in my car lol It’s older obviously as it has a trunk, it seemed a little dry so I have it in a t…

Hardiness in Pots
by PaddyM- 2 followers

This question isn't necessarily limited to palms, but it's more of a general "plants in pots" question. I planted some bamboo in very large pots a few years ago, and when picking the species of bamboo, the nursery said that planting in pots could cause you lose up a zone of hardiness (so we picked a species that is one hardiness zone below me). It makes sense to me, since the roots are much more exposed to colder temperatures. Would love to hear others' experience/knowledge on how hardiness is affecting by planting in pots. Thanks!

Should I remove rotten roots?

Hi all, I'm germinating Washingtonia (1 inch height seedlings, look good and grow by 2-3 millimeters per day, 2-3 inch roots) but some of them got root rot. Some seedlings have 1 root, some have 2 (second is healthy) Of course, I will now transplant them into larger cups with drainage holes and will stop overwatering. But should I remove this black and brown parts? Maybe H2O2 soaking? Is it possible that such a black tip appeared because of the heating mat? Thanks!
