Potted washy noob in michigan

Hi all, I’m new here ☺️ I’ve always thought about having a potted palm. I saw a thread on here recommending washies as a palm that can live in a pot and handle dry winter air indoors, so I decided to give them a try since the seedlings are so cheap on eBay. I ordered three bare-root washy seedlings from an ebay seller in Nevada and received six. They arrived on a cold day in March (about 25F) with roots wrapped in damp paper towels. They were beautiful on arrival. This is how they looked right after potting. Before planting, I soaked the roots in distilled water with kelp extract. then I planted them in a mix of Miracle Gro Palm/Cactus, perlite and sand, ba…

Trachecarpus fortunei die off
by jplankfsu2015- 4 replies

I manage a wholesale nursery in northeast Texas. We grow several cold hardy palms, one of which is Trachecarpus fortunei. They seem to have a problem that I can't figure out. The frond individual leaves will start to curl up. It will then progress to browining of lower fronds and progress to the entire set of fronds. In the final stages, you can pull out the primary new frond and it smells like rotten flesh inside the trunk. I have grown this species in Floriday for many years and have only started experiencing this problem in Texas over the past several years. These plants have been grown from seed and currently are about 4 years old. Any help would be appreciated!

Alright I've got 20 Washies - they are 5 month old now and have about 4-5 leaves, live indoors with 5 hour of straight sun and 14 hours of LED. Zone 5. Some of them got yellow lower leaves. Ain't it too soon? And what if some of them got not 1 but 2 yellowing leaves? I make sure that their leaves don't touch the window glass but left them to my mom now and will get home in a month. I will be glad of any advice Also: A friend of mine wants to buy them for his bar in a couple of months when they grow up. His bar is quite dark - is it possible to predict how this palms trees will feel? Slowing down growth is ok, but maybe I can somehow prepare the seedlings for moving?…

Hi there! I'm new in the forum. I live in Málaga (Spain) and I'm the proud father of 2 coconut palms. They are placed in south-west facing balcony, and the orange one is 2 years old. The second one, much smaller, is only one, bought this past spring. Has well grow rate as well. They are the typical ones imported from Holland to grocery shops to Europe. The orange one started to pinnate this year, since the last year which I brought him home. They have been feeding palm fertilizer since the very early growing season, and I stop fertilizing them last week. As the temps start to decrease as well, they will be going indoors more or…

I have a 3 yrs old Ravanea Lakatra , the new leaves grow without the stem, the stem isn’t growing at all. Is this related to nutrient deficiency or other? I have seen the same in my Huge Licualas while the stems are normally much longer ??? I really appreciate some knowledge to help me out. Thank you . Attaching pics.

Can I get more winter growth from bringing my Palms inside at night and using grow lights?
by Dwarf Fan- 12 replies

Now that the warm weather is fading in Texas and colder weather and less sunlight is approaching can I bring my potted Palms inside my garage and put them under a grow light at night to achieve faster growth and bigger Palms to put in ground come spring time? Will palms grow more vigorously under a 24 light period consisting of natural sun supplemented with a grow light? Or do Palms need a “dark” or “night” period of at least 6 hours or ? Last question for you guys that use grow lights on Palms indoors what type of lights are you using? Any that are better than others for Palms? Thanks, Dan

Hello! I am an avid houseplant keeper and adore keeping indoor potted trees (ficus, bonsai, and fruit trees mainly), but I have never had a palm tree before. However, my coworker was at a greenhouse the other day and was offered several free houseplants, all in various stages of death. Some could be saved and others, unfortunately were too far gone. One of the plants given was a lovely Mexican Fan Palm (Washingtonia robusta) in a crumbling ceramic pot. My coworker brought all the plants to the office and I have been attempting at reviving each of them, but my palm knowledge is not very deep. I have been doing a bit of research and can't quite decide if it was …

bonsai Lytocaryum weddellianum as Bonsai
by Pal Meir- 1 follower

My 10 Lytocaryum weddellianum grown up from seed in 2013 were more and more getting too tall for my desktop, except one (N°1306c) which I had kept quite small by very brutal root pruning. (But even the other pruned palm N°1306a is growing too tall …) Now I am intending to keep my 3 one year young L batavum as small bonsai palms. First, I will keep them as long as possible in their tiny Ø8xH9cm clay pots. Second, I will expose them also to direct sunlight, but watching that they don’t get burned. @Jamesasb , you have mentioned (and posted a pic) one year ago that you are making one of your L weddellianum to a bonsai. Are there already visible and positive resul…

Repotting a Phoenix canariensis

Hi everyone. I've had a phoenix canariensis (attached is some pics) for just over a year now. I put it in what I think may of been a too narrow pot. I've noticed it's started to have some browning of the lower fronds. Also there is a root starting to grow out the bottom of it. My questions are should I repot in larger container?, can I repot in now in October i( I live in the UK so it's starting to get colder or should I wait till spring or does it matter ?

Cat Palms Not Healthy

Looking for some advice on these CAT palms in Fort Myers Florida. They are in self draining pots and have not been manually watered since the rainy season. I fear that they are not getting enough water as they have drain holes, I placed rock at the bottom of these and there really isn't a ton of space for dirt. Although there is a water basin at the bottom that holds spare water. They get direct afternoon sun, maybe 4-5 hours. They also took on some salt water during H.IAN last year. I am finally getting around to fixing my sprinkler system so they can be watered on a schedule. I am thinking I should over water and see how it goes... The less burnt-looking one …

I tried my luck with one this growing season and it's doing ok but is going to need a repot ASAP. If it's just going to croak when I bring it inside I'm curious if it's even worth the time/money for the soil and new pot. Thanks
