Seeking advice regarding potted Bismarckia, Butia, Jubaea and Nikau palms.

I have recently acquired or germinated four reputedly slower growing palms, which I will initially keep in pots. I intend to plant the Jubaea Chilensis and Butia Capitata in my yard in Portland once they are old and big enough. With the increasing incidences of polar vortexes, I won't be able to plant the Bismarckia Nobilis and Rhapostylis sapida outside, but intend to give them away to someone on the southern Oregon coast when they get too big (if I am still alive at that point.) My first questions are about the growth rate of the Bismarckia, Butia and Jubaea: How fast do they actually grow? How often should I repot them and how long will it be possible to k…

Hello everyone. I recently purchased three majesty palms and I have them in pots on my patio. We are in Tampa, Florida (zone 9b) and these palms are going to near lots of direct sunlight. The pots have one hole about 1.5 inches in diameter in the bottom of them for drainage. The soil I used was Miracle Grow, Cactus, Palm and Citrus soil. After only having them a little over a week, you can see they are turning very brown. I presume this means they need more water. I've been watering them every other day, just when I notice that the top inch of soil is dry. If these aren't the best for being in pots in a patio in direct hot sun, can someone recommend an…

The landscapers in our "maintainance free" townhome, sprayed for weeds in the flowerbeds and it got on my European Fan Palm because of the breezer. Several fronds, including the stems, have turned brown. I recognize the damage from other plants that were inadvertently sprayed. Should I trim the brown/dead stems at the trunk? Will the plant be OK? I would say that no more than a quarter of the 4 foot high plant was affected. Any hopes that the plant will survive. I have discussed this problem of spraying weeds inches away from thriving plants. .

new fronds cut short?
by 5am- 4 replies

A few of my smallest potted palms have pushed out new fronds which appear to be cut very short. Nothing larger has been affected. Is it a pest? There has been some animal destroying my aloes and cactus. Also, I do have 2 S. causiarum with a severe white scale infection, but I haven't seen bugs on anything else. Is it cold damage? There were 2 nights below freezing in mid Jan. Should I toss them or just watch and wait?

Hydriastele beguinii as a houseplant?

Hello, I’ve been growing these seedlings for 6 months now. Am not sure if they make good houseplants and am curious if anyone has any experience with them. In September, I had them very close to plant lights and I think it burned/bronzed the foliage; I moved them shortly afterwards. Do they prefer lower light? Are they best treated as shade loving understory-type palms as juveniles? I read that high nitrogen fertilizer should be avoided with them. Perhaps that caused the burning? I fertilize weakly, every other watering as I do with the nearby indoor palms: J. Magnificas, verschaffeltia splendida. They are in well draining soil and am careful not to overwater…

Jubaea Chilensis -query

Spring finally appears to have arrived here in SE UK, after a very wet, very grey and very long winter.... Luckily, we didn't experience much in the way of severe cold, with nothing more than a a few frosty mornings. Every palm bar one suffered from spear pull after (a very cold) winter 2022/2023, I'm not expecting too many issues this year. But time will tell... My small Jubaea suffered from spear pull early last year and as a result only put out one crimpled frond by the end of the summer. It has already stared to put out new fronds this year, however, it now appears to be growing at any angle. Does anyone know if it will straighten up in time, or is th…

Help! What is wrong with my potted palm?

I love my palm! I’ve had it about 8 years and was always healthy. i moved house last July, but it remained in good condition. From January, it has started to lose its deep green colour. The leaves are turning a pale, faded green, even slightly yellow. The tips are brown and some leaves are even crispy. It’s usually pretty bushy.. but I’ve had to cut all the dried branches away and it’s starting to thin out. I dont think I’m over watering, I wait until it’s dried mostly until I water again which I’ve always done. its not in the sunniest of spots as I live in a terraced house so in the winter the house is quite dark so I have been moving it close to a wi…

Hey everyone, I have a ton of 1-3 gallon sabal palmettos in my house and my wife and I are getting a little antsy to put them outside. Our extended forecast calls for mid 40s-50s during the day and low to mid 30s Fahrenheit during the night. Just wondering if these will mind coming in and out of frosts for the next couple of weeks. I know I can wait but am just curious. Also probably joining IPS soon so I can sell some, there’s so many…

Separating S. minor

Ever been too afraid to separate minors because the root damage may kill them? Me too! But since my last move, seedlings are readily available at a local nursery so I can experiment without feeling too much remorse if something goes wrong. March 19. There were 3 minors growing in a single pot and I wasn't happy with the arrangement. These 3 have much smaller leaves than my other minors. Not really sure if they're misidentified or perhaps just a much smaller variety. Anyway, it was time to yank it out and see what could be done! The roots were only about 1/3 of this depth just 10 months before, when it was potted. This lizard was hiding under the pot…

Spear Pull on My C. Humilis
by Ivan604- 1 follower

So about 2 weeks ago I repotted my C. Humilis to a bigger pot since there was a lotta rots coming outta the bottom. All was fine until I tugged on the spears of the main trunk and the two newest fronds came out. There was a third front that was open which was fine. The 3 other suckers were fine, no pull on any of their crowns. I'm not too sure what went wrong, possibly the stress of being repotted and it took awhile for it to show symptoms? I did a few spear tugs to see if it was stressed and no problem until now. I poured hydrogen peroxide 3% into the crown and pulled the gunk out, not much came out. I watered it when it was repotted and I have a small space heater that …

I need to repot my Trachycarpus palms. I have access to the following materials: vermiculite, perlite, Pumice, lava rocks, sand, rock dust, sandy loam soil, compost, peat moss, Coco coir. I was thinking to just mix something like this: 2 parts peat and 1/2-1 part perlite then add some osmocote and other goodies for nutrients. What do you guys think?

I just got this beauty for $30. Great deal. It is rootbound. How big of a pot do i use to repot it? Do i cut the roots coming out of the plastic pot, or cut the pot to not damage the roots when i get it out? I know they don’t like direct sunlight. She kept it indoors. Can i put it under my covered patio from spring to fall? Finally, without going crazy, what mix soil would you recommend? Thxs for the help Pat

Licuala Grandis soil change

Good morning/afternoon/evening to you all 🌴 I’m going to purchase a Licuala Grandis and will need to change the soil mix after doing so. I’ll grow it indoors in a pot. I found a suggestion for a soil mix on this site (Seramis, bark and Leca) but I have a few questions about it. - The plant will be in regular potting soil when I purchase it. If I repot it immediately into the mix mentioned above, will the roots be able to adjust? - How should I go about repotting it? Do I have to remove all old potting soil from the roots? Is it better to let the old soil dry out before repotting or is moist soil better? Should I do it immediately after purchasing or let it…

Hi! I got this licuala grandis about a week ago, 94cm tall, 21x23cm in a pot. I can see one leaf turn a little yellow. And I made one hole more in the pot and I see root rot. I need probably have to change soil. What soil mixture shoud I use? Something like seramis, kokohum, a pine bark? Should I cut off all the root rot? Should I change all the soil off (everything around roots)? Will this die if I touch the roots? I do not know how sensitive this plant is. Thank you!

My chambeyronia started to throw there red leaf at various stages of seedling growth some with deeper red tones than others you just can’t beat the good old chambeyronia for its red leaf and ease of growing yes there are other palms that are even more beautiful but that’s another story
