Christmas tree spots

Hi everyone. I'm new to Christmas palms and I've had two for about a month now. They have developed these spots. A few of the lower leaves have turned a little yellow also. I don't know what they are or really how to treat for it if it's even needed. I did give a dose of magnesium a few days ago because I didn't think it would hurt anyway. Anyone know what this is? Thanks.

Scale on hand-me-down palms... can I save them or nah?

My mom is simplifying her plant collection and gave me two of what I think are parlor palms. My dad had accidentally put them directly into the sun after a long winter, so they did get sunburnt... but you know, that can be dealt with. We discovered after the fact, though, that they have huge amounts of SCALE. She’d had no idea and feels terrible. What do you think, are these past help? If not, is it safe to trim off the worst branches and then use Dawn on the rest over the course of a few weeks? If so, should I quarantine them away from my other plants, since I so far do not have scale in my own garden? Idk how readily it spreads outside. Or do we just…

Potted Lytocaryum pest identification

Hi, Weeks ago I've noticed springtails in my Lytocaryums pots, now there is something else inside too. Shall I kill it with fire? It looks like a mite but it's white, runs fast and is quite huge, bigger than springtails. Is that something super deadly, or some soil living creature that won't kill my gems? Please help :O Sorry for the picture quality, it is even worse when I try to upload it here.

Potted Sabal Palmetto
by trachyman- 1 reply

This was sold to me as a s. palmetto. It is in a 2 gallon pot. No roots are coming through the drain holes yet but I can see some roots at the bottom when I peer through the holes. Should I go ahead and pot it up to a 5 gallon? Also just to be clear s. palmettos like a lot of water right? With proper drainage you can't water it too much, right? Anybody with potted sabal palmettos post some pics. Also I seem to be having a hard time finding sabal birmingham seedlings or seeds. If anyone have either please let me know.

Coconut Palm Question

Hi guys, I was wondering what might be wrong with my coconut palm. His newest leaves are much more yellow looking than his oldest. I've had this palm for a little over a gear now and he is just starting to yellow. I have been feeding him miricle grow with a 2-1-1 ratio (water dissolve) for about 3-4 months and early this month added notice grow granular for palms and cactus. He still continues to yellow though. I've read that nitrogen deficiencies are big for potted palms and this is one way they show it. But I am not sure if is the issue because of the fertilizer I am giving it. I also water the palm every day because it's summer so it's outside now and it's hot an…

Springtails - Do I fight them?

Hello, I noticed i have springtails on Lytocaryums, how deadly those creatures are? I've read they are fairly not dangerous to plants but I need to be sure since they infested my favorite palms. I must have brought this crap with a potting mix I used for my balcony plants. Should i fight them now since there are not so many visible? If so, is there non chemical alernative?

Anyone expert on PAR LIGHT REQUIREMENTS
by Guest Dave L- 3 replies

I know there are no stupid questions, but I may get close with this one. I have a relatively new all season greenhouse with a variety of palms and tropical plants. I have an automated shade system that can respond to temperature and PAR light levels. When it gets too hot (Now it is set at 80F) the shades close to reduce the heat a few degrees. I attempt (with not great success) to keep the house at 75-80 F degrees day and 60-70 at night. During the day the outside PAR can reach almost 2000. I have researched this subject and I cannot find any source that can tell me if too much PAR is harmful. I know that ideal PAR for growing is between 400-700, but is too much h…

Verschaffeltia splendida: 12 months from sprouted seed to 9” deep pot.

Really pleased with the progress on this 1 year old seedling. It was growing in a red solo cup placed within the grey cache pot for past 3 months and produced many long roots out the drainage holes. Today I cut drainage holes in the cache pot (grey tumbler cup) and then transplanted. The tumblers allow a deep narrow pot for seedings and can be cut away easily. Photos below.

Dypsis plumosa -- sprouting seeds 1 2

Howdyall, spring is coming soon hip hip hooray! And, my thoughts turn to lust - palm lust. Some of you may have received some free Dypsis plumosa seed I sent a while back. I kept a few, threw them in a pot and they germinated. Here's one of the babies in my hairy, average size man's mitt. Note the long root, that dives straight down, then jogs a bit where it hit the bottom of the pot. Handle them with care, don't break that root and don't knock the seed off the plant. They don't always die when that happens, but it sets them back. So, I hope some of you have gotten some of yours to sprout! Konstantin, how are yours over there in Greece? I know I sent o…

What do you think report or not? A. alex 'Beatrice' already has a lot of hair roots on its surface. It must be in the water at all the times. The current pot is 12 liters. The next size would be 25 liters. I'll wait until that new leaf is opened. I'm gonna repot after that if it is good for the palm. Is it?

Dark spots on Lipstick Palm petioles
by David_Sweden- 1 follower

My Lipstick Palm has beautifully red petioles since over a year (after a long wait) and when I saw big clusters of dark brown spots on these, I first thought it was nothing (just some pigmentation): But when I checked it with a loupe it turned out a bit more suspicious. My plant book suggests it could be either scale insects or what I think you in English call just "edema" or "oedema", because small wounds have formed which when healing cause corky stuff (in my country it is called "cork disease"), and that the edema can be caused either by bugs (e g different kinds of mites or thrips) or physiologically. I've been trying to identify what it is and I wonder if anyone w…

Your best indoor Dypsis lutescens
by Makaisland Palms- 6 replies
Dypsis lutescens is a very common palm to get at the box stores just about everywhere. For many of us we are stuck keeping it indoors in containers. What is the best outcome you have seen for this? Just looking for a goal to look forward to with this one! I've had mine about 4 years now, and it's slowly inching up and bulking up. Fronds top out at about 6 feet now but that's including the pot. It's pictured outside in full sun right now, but that is only for the next 10 minutes while I give it a solid watering and spray off some mealybugs. Then it's back indoors to bright indirect light. Anywho, show me the best you've got, something I can strive …

Hi I am brand new to planting and gardening in general. We re did our front garden areas and included are two yuca planted trees. They were slightly brownish yellowish to start. I have had them a week. Any idea what would cause the greens to do this and what can I do to fix it and make sure it doesn’t happen again? https://drive.google.com/file/d/1LXwHP9w3BxQf-IwQsumgY0_rwKHUb98S https://drive.google.com/file/d/1S6AspC4nJllBY8MEOwpA2-qujzMIxfM_ https://drive.google.com/file/d/1L2ujBIpZBFE4GZHdf5V1B11Opu7CAkgg/view?usp=drivesdk https://drive.google.com/file/d/1c7FYRVXvTArhQ7MIYjVsji_B3SRZZIN7/view?usp=drivesdk

Help with palms please? :)

Hi there, I hope you wonderful palm people might be able to help me. I have a couple of different palms with different issues (which all probably stem from my lack of knowledge and useless plantcare!). I am worried they're all reaching a critical point! Any help would be really appreciated... so here goes!: Palm 1 (Henry) Bought from Ikea, had him about 2 years. He is green but not vibrant, looks pale green and dull. His leaves look kind of droopy and he has some brown leaves. He is kept in a conservatory with quite a lot of sun (maybe this is the problem?) However I had him somewhere darker before that and he was the same. He has been repotted once …

Help with Kentia Palm Seedlings

Hi All, I'm a longtime palm-lover and lurker of the forums. I recently got a pair of Kentia palm seedlings that are not looking too well and I'm hoping that with the advice here, I will be able to save them. When I received the seedlings, they were bare-root and covered in scale. See image below. I sprayed the leaves and stem with an insecticide (Safer's End-All). I then planted them in a mix of 50% coco-coir and 50% pumice. I watered them with an added mycorrhizae root booster (this one) and made sure the pot had lots of drainage. I keep the pot near a north-facing window which gets some sun poking in throughout the day but does not get any intense d…

Majesty Palm, plant seems loose

Hi, My Majesty Palm seems loose in the soil, or not soil as case is. I really thought it was how the liner was sitting in a bigger pot but noticed it is the plant itself that is wobbly. What they used for soil I see is would chips and sawdust it seems. I can put my finger as far as possible like butter. Plus you will see in the pic that it has a root that is exposed for an inch or two. I was going to put soil on top and pack it down some to cover the root and see if makes it sturdier but then saw this wood concoction they used. So now am not sure what to do, top it up repot it, get rid of wood stuff etc... lol. Besides this the Palm seems fine, green frond…

Hey everyone! New to the forum and hoping to get some help keeping my plants healthy I purchased a Bangalow Palm recently from a large wholesaler and it seemed pretty healthy at the time. A month on and I believe it may have some sort of pest infection or similar, but I'm also concerned the soil quality is poor and it may need changing. Can you guys help me with what to do to ensure he lives a long and happy life indoors? Symptoms(pictures attached) - browning fronds - fronds losing colour (becoming splotchy) and yellowing - white flecks on some leaves Nb: it is kept indoors in a well lit room Tha…

Fertilizer and Drip Irrigation for greenhouse palms
by Guest Dave L- 4 replies

Hello. A new member here looking for a bit of advice. I recently built a temperature controlled greenhouse just west of Pittsburgh, planning to grow palms and tropical plants. I am using drip irrigation and my question is about fertilization. My palms were only planted 8 weeks ago using worm casting and worm compost tea for fertilization. While this may provide some very good nutrients, my plants need a more balanced approach that provides the NPK and micro nutrients specific to palms. So my plan is to introduce BGI's Palmgain as the primary fertilizer. I would appreciate any comments about this fertilizer. So I have 2 questions: 1. Is there a benefit t…
