Fertilizer for Pots

I know there have been a lot of threads on fert, but wondering what people use for slow release when they have a lot of pots? Looking for more cost-effective solutions than Osmocote and the like, as long as they work well! Something I can buy in bulk, 50 lb bags ideally, that works well and is cost effective. Appreciate any thoughts - my container ranch is large, so looking to minimize expense if possible!

Cat Palm Stressing me Out...

Hi yall This is my first post and I was really excited to see there's a whole forum for this- I'm mostly on Swedespeed- a Volvo forum. Im based here in NE Ohio where for about 5 months it's lovely and green outside, yellow/red for a month in the fall, then 6 months of grey dark winter where it looks like a nuke went off. I honestly get really depressed in the winters here not being able to see any green so I wanted to make a change and get in a big ol palm. I got this big Cat Palm from Lowes (not the best place I know) and I mounted a LED grow flood light to the wall. The bulb also lights up the livingroom once it's dark (it's on a timer for 13 hours a day)…

Boarding School for potted palms

Yes, I am being facetious and I know this may sound like a first-world kind of problem but finding a solution would make my life much easier now. Does Anyone know of any Boarding services for potted palms / houseplants? A place to keep them in greenhouse for winter or beyond until I can fetch them. I just learned of an orchid boarding facility in VA, was featured in the Washington Post. I spoke with the owner and will likely send my orchids to boarding school come October; they accept orchids only. I am living / working in 2 locations now 400 miles apart and would be easier on me to just pay someone to care/house my palms. Location from NH down to VA is feasible. …

Some kind of fungus in my pots, please advise.

Hi there, I have couple pots filled with Lytocaryum seedlings. Today I wanted to check how are they doing and uncovered some top soil to check on moisture level. I've noticed tiny dots of fungus? I think. Do you think it's a threat? Have a look. The soil is wet cause I just watered it. I am underwatering them for majority of time so this is not causes by being waterlogged all the time. Soil mix is Pine Bark - Seramis-Lava rock-Coco coir in mixed ratio. It's almost only Pine bark that has these white things growing on it. I had to dig in with a knife to solid 4-5 cm to get to this affected parts of soil.

More "Prep" suggestions before Pelagodoxa "Surgery"

Hi, Palm Lovers, palms fanatics, and palm friends: I have really been getting some wonderful advice prior to my uprooting of a Pelagodoxa palm, temporarily containerising it, then having it over its transplant shock (hopefully!) by the time it is ready to have a way more pleasing home in my yet-to-be-constructed Central Alabama greenhouse in April, 2021. (Alas, this is my last storm season and winter in South Florida after 40 years here, so the change will be very significant!) At any rate, several members have given me: "gold standard" advice about HOW to extricate this 7 ft. tall Pelagodoxa, now growing quite well in our rocky SE Florida soil. It seems doubtfu…

transplanting Pelagodoxa going from ground (in Zone 10B) to container to Greenhouse in 2021. I need advice!!
by BamaPalmer- 9 replies

I have a question for those of you who have taken an in-ground palm out of the ground and successfully containerized it. A Pelagodoxa henryii that was purchased in a 1-gal size 5 years a go from Jeff at Floribunda palms is really beginning to look beautiful at about 7-ft tall and each frond getting larger and more impressive. We will be moving out of the Greater Fort Lauderdale area next Spring, (after 41 years,) to Central Alabama (possibly Zone 8B,) and I am constructing a greenhouse (up there) to accommodate several of my favourite palms (like this specimen,) and a few tropical fruiting trees. Since I have the "luxury" of time till the move, I wanted to extricat…

North Texas Pygmy date yellow/browning
by Kanianic- 10 replies

New here but I bought a 15 gallon Pygmy date palm that I potted with stagreen potting mix. I water deep every other day to maintain at min moist to two inches down. I’ve also sprayed daconil anti fungus on the fronds. I’ve also fertilized with miracle-gro for palm. The lower fronds are all brown and almost dead and the yellowing and browning fronds are getting worse. Can anyone tell me what I’m doing wrong?

Nitrozyme/ gibberellins

Do any of you use nitrozyme or other similar products to aid germination? I understand it can backfire and cause an elongated seedling more prone to wither and die. Are there situations where it is a good idea and works well?

My Livistonia Rotundifolia seems to be dying very quickly, at first it was just one or two leaves which turned brown now all of them are, it starts at the tips and is spreading really quickly, at this rate I will not have a plant by the end of the week. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, HC

Majesty palm issues

Hello all!! I acquired this majesty palm (not 100% sure of name) from my mother in law about a year ago. At her house, it only ever had 4 fronds. I brought it back to my house and started taking care of it. It started drying out pretty quick. We have forced air heat and my MIL did not. About four months ago, I started doing some research into how to make it more healthy. I went on some of my fb groups and a person helped me with what I could fertilize it with. He recommended chelated iron 6-0-0. I have used it twice bit very little as I was afraid of burning the plant. I purchased a humidifier about a week ago and placed it near the palm tree. I spray it with water twice …

Trachycarpus fortunei yellowing?
by krisz924- 3 replies

Hi! I gave my plant some slow release fertilizer( 6 months) a couple of days ago and I see some yellowing on the leaves. Are these normal? There is some minimal yellowing on the top leaves aswell. I think the yellowing cause is that the plant is in a black container and gets full sun all day. Maybe the roots get heated up too much? I moved it to a more shady area. Thanks for the answers!

SAGO fronds curling

Hi. I realize that a Sago is not a true palm, but I'm hoping someone has experienced this. Several (not all) of the fronds are curling at the ends.....its not throughout the plant and only on one side. I would appreciate any advice. I've attached some pics to give some clarity to the curling. FYI, I'm growing 8 palm varieties grow beds (not pots), in an all season greenhouse; in a soil mix of 50% topsoil, 20% peat, 20% compost, 10% perlite; with drip irrigation. Many thanks dave

Hello there! I recently just became a plant mom and purchased areca palms and the lady finger palm as indoor house plants. One of the areca palms came with a millipede infestation in the soil, so I tossed it. The areca palm I have now had one mealy bug and these little black flies that I think are gnats (not sure though). I also pulled what I think was an earwig out of the soil. My lady palm I think has soil mites (really REALLY tiny translucent red/brown bugs with legs - they look like specs). I see them crawling in the soil and around the pot. I'm hoping to get clarity on which pests to kill and which to keep. I read online that mealy bugs are bad and that I s…

When shoud I repot?

I have bought a trachycarpus fortunei with a 30cm trunk. There is a 2019 date on the container. My question is, should I repot the palm since I guess it has been repotted one year ago, or it does not worth it yet and repot in the next spring? I live in the EU so there are two more warm months.

I have these 2 large ceramic pots that I filled with regular potting soil, one has a tangerine tree and the other is vacant. I noticed that during long periods of rain they had a tendency to "flood", something that would take several days to "recover" from (which I learned was just sun evaporation). They remain moist even without rainfall or irrigation as well. The tangerine has been planted there for months and hasn't ran into any issues with root rot etc. Some investigation found that they in fact have zero drainage at all. I'm aware of some species (cyrtostachys renda for example) thriving in "aquatic" conditions, though this is a much different environment from,…

Pygmy Date, Christmas, and Majesty Palms
by Phil413- 5 replies

Hi, I really don't know much about plants or trees but I love palm trees. I recently bought a christmas palm, majesty palm, and pygmy date palm put them all in large pots. I have read some conflicting information about whether or not to keep them on the back porch since it's spring. I live in Oklahoma and it's been in the 90s lately, which is a bit unusual for this time of year. I really wanted to keep them in the house but some of what I read suggests they (don't remember which one) may go somewhat dormant. Should they be kept indoors or outdoors? If indoors, I have a room to keep them in and a window where they can get sun. They can also be placed in there w…

Transferred recently purchased 7 gallon Bottle Palm into slightly larger container, and am now concerned that the leave's bent-over ends and/or slightly brown ends indicate issues (too much water, not enough water, transfer shock, etc...?) For reference, when I first transferred it five days ago, I merely used the soil that was in the nursery's 7 gallon pot, and added some mulched potting soil around the perimeter where there was a gap. However, I failed to include a rock base, so drainage was likely an issue. I watered (maybe about 1 gallon) each afternoon on two consecutive days (top soil within the pot was dry prior to watering). Being concerned about the prosp…
