Hello everyone! First time poster, long time reader here First off, some background information: I was lucky enough to get my hands on this howea belmoreana about three months ago. I live in Germany, usually they only sell the Kentias here. The soil was very wet and dense (stayed wet for over two weeks even during the late summer heat), so I repotted it a month later into a mix of 45% soil, 40% clay granules and 15% pine bark. So far, I've kept it in a corner about 4.5m (about 14 feet) away from a south facing window front, so it doesn't get a lot of light, but I read that Howeas can handle low light conditions fairly well. I moved it away from the light into that c…

Self-watering pots and roots

I have all of my palms in plastic self-watering pots. I noticed my big cataractarum has grown some huge roots in the water tray at the bottom. Is this going to cause root rot or any other issues? It's grown a ton in the roughly 6 months I've had it.

Hi everyone. I recently adquired my first palm ever . I picked a Washingtonia. Unfortunately I'm just a newbie and don't want my palm to have a bad time. I would like to know the essentials for keeping my palm healthy, how much should I water, what to keep an eye out for. I live in Yucatan (Mexico) where there is plenty of sun and very warm temperatures. Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

Kentia Palm - to re-repot or leave it

Hello everyone! I’m super new here, bought a Kentia Palm and I over-zealously re-potted it from a 5-gallon pot to a bigger one (wider, not so much taller). I kept the original potting mix around the roots and then just put it inside the pot with general potting soil. I am now worried about root rot. I took a look around the soil and it’s dried out quite a bit but it does seem a bit heavy. I also noticed there are worms wriggling around in there (earthworms), which I’ve read are good for the soil and can help bring more air to the roots because they crawl and create tunnels through the soil. Should I repot the palm again in a smaller pot with better draining soil mix? …

Licuala Peltata indoors in New York help needed

Hey all, I got my first Peltata two weeks ago from a Florida nursery..about 36" tall and 4 fans/spears. I'm in New York City and trying to figure out to the best indoor care strategy especially re: light. I'm not letting the soil dry out and misting 2x a day which seems straightforward but as for light I've seen a lot of conflicting notes. It's an understory palm that needs shade outdoors but it seemed dangerous to treat it like a low-light indoors plant. Looking for some experienced advice on lighting. Right now, I have it about 3" ft from a southern facing window that gets about 5 hours of full sun this time of year but I can raise or lower a solar shade on. I…

Archie trouble
by Corrosion- 3 replies

Hello I ordered some archies by mailorder, took few weeks or so. I live in cold climate so I have to overwinter my palms indoors under lamps. When they arrived looked mostly okay maybe a bit beaten up but still green. I kept one outside when it was blown over several times by a strong wind gusts but I am sure it did not get any frost-no frost has been recorded in my garden yet. My personal opinion is that they dislike long delivery-being in a dark box for weeks, can it be so? Now I brought them in and one of them looks really bad, leaves drying and so. What can I do to save it? The pot is tiny maybe repot it into bigger one? I have been growing c…

Please post your experiences with growing Chamaedorea tuerckheimii in pots, your comments to soil mix, watering, light requirement, humidity, growth rate, fertilizing, deficiencies, pests, etc. Though I don’t have much experience with this species yet I’ll start with my seedlings just germinated in 2015 during last autumn. The seedlings are in 8x9cm clay pots, the soil “mix” is 100% pine bark 2-8mm (only in one case mixed with a bit coir Kokohum®). As the seedlings are still very tiny I water only a bit, until water comes out of the draining hole. The water I’m using is carbonate free, acidic from a fountain in SW Germany (Odenwald). The palms stand on a desk in a li…

http://imgur.com/gallery/RrRmtYb Good evening. Long time reader, first time poster. This is one of my Majesty palms, lives on my patio. It's in well-draining soil(Fox Farm ocean something or other) with sand mixed in. Fertilized with Jobes palm spikes. Has been on my patio in SE TX since January. It's growing fine and seems healthy, but the new growth is a lighter shade of green than previous growth. What am I doing wrong?

hello, Hope all are doing well. I re potted a coconut palm from a 15" pot to 20". Per some posts I read here, I have used Micro life. I was wondering if I need to use salt, HastaGro and Bonide (BND7458) - Grass Beater Concentrate at this time? I bought it in Florida last November. it was infested with scale but had shiny leaves. I did baby it last winter, this winter I would like to see if I can leave it out a bit longer in a bit lower temps. it was under a patio during the summer, does receive east sun.

Overall, she’s growing well and all the new growth is fine. Repotted 3 months ago and added bone/blood meal, lesco 8-2-12-4, compost and some peat moss all in the blend. It gets filtered sun in the morning and mid afternoon. Is this some sort of blight?

Hi, I'm new here and new to palms. I live in Utah and owned a large Dypsis several years ago and likely killed it due to my lack of knowledge on how to care for it. I recently ordered a Dypsis Decaryi from an eBay seller in Florida. The seller sent what looks like a pretty healthy palm and included several King and Areca seedlings in the package. These will obviously be kept indoors, but I've got them out getting a bit of sun and a good watering after planting. Does this look ok for a planting depth and soil? For the King and Areca seedlings, if there is still a seed attached to the roots, should it be at soil level, or below, and if so, how much below? …

Help! Palm unhappy

I'm new to taking care of a majesty palm and my palm has started to show signs of distress over the past month. It is taking a bit of a beating from my cat, which we're trying to prevent. It is currently in a plastic pot with two 1.5 cm drainage holes on the bottom. I used palm mix soil when potting. I water about twice per week and the top layer of soil still feels slightly damp. Initially the bottom fronds had brown tips but now one also has yellow. Am I over and underwatering it?! Do I need more drainage? I have it in indirect light currently and I'm misting it gently daily. I am moving it directly into a window now, but have some concerns as we live i…

Howea belmoreana s packed for winter storage

Since I am working 400 miles away from my houseplants I am paying to keep them a commercial greenhouse for the winter. Relatives have done their best caring for the palms but each time I return home the palms are sitting in saucers full of water and losing more fronds. Some pics below of the howeas wrapped and ready to go; and they look so *covid-19* compliant wrapped in their protective gear. I packed newspapers over the soil so that rootball does not shift in transit. Hopefully the stress of packing and moving them is not greater than leaving them with family; I feel they would suffer a slow death if they remain here. Last photo below: I like the c…

Source for organic material

First post here. I'm going to try make some soil mix to transplant a Dypsis Decaryi. I can get Turface MVP and perlite pretty easily for the inorganic, but other than brand-name potting soil, I don't find many of the suggested organic materials around here. I have found these two things from pet stores that look pretty close. Do either of these look good to use? Coconut Fiber here: https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/zoo-med-eco-earth-compressed-coconut-fiber-expandable-substrate-905771?cm_mmc=PSH-_-GGL-_-CAL-_-PME-_-PET-_-AQU-_-0-_-PM_GGL_FY20_SBU05_SH13_SmallAnimalBird%26ReptileSupplies_ReptileAccessories_PLA-SMRT-_-0-_-0&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIobSc…

Hi everyone, Glad to be accepted into the forum :-). My recent adoption of a dwarf date palm tree has led me here, to reach out for your help. Originally the tree was planted on the ground before I received it, which now lives in an outdoor pot in my small backyard. The guy who supplied the tree surprised me that he could drop it off quickly on the day and was caught half-prepared. He had dropped it off without a soil bag and unfortunately had to stay like that overnight as my backyard is just concrete (with fake grass). I did as much as I could to quickly pot it on the next day with a mixture of peat, good quality soil & sand along with a 15cm/6" base of sc…

I have a few Chamaedorea tepejilote and Chamaedorea radicalis seedlings and I’m concerned about the leaf colors (yellow rad, very deep green tep). The first picture shows what I think are one rad and two tep. The second picture I think are all rad. The top seedlings are sitting against a north wall and should get basically no direct sun; the bottom palms may get some filtered sun in the afternoon (based on this photo, more than I intended!), and some direct sun in the evening. Does this look like a light issue or a nutrient issue? They’re in pure coco coir and I have not been fertilizing until very recently... but I know the Texas sun is a lot for these palms…

Hi everyone , I recently bought a palm tree and it seems to have some issues. Something seems to be eating it and I think I'm giving it too much sun judging by the tips of the palm? I went out and bought some insecticidal soap and did one treatment 48 hours ago. Also Iv always loved all different types of palm tree and I was wondering if you kind people could give me some advice and pointers? I don't wanna lose my little guy. Thank you.
