Hello! I have 3 washingtonia robustas growing from seeds in 1.5 gallon pots. This spring I'm going to repot them into bigger ones. So my question is. How important to them is root damage, because some of roots are sticking out from drain holes and there is no way rather that clip them off? My 6 moths old palms and me on the picture.

Palm Pot Depth Growth Rate Experiment
by floridaPalmMan- 14 replies
So I've read in multiple places (and heard from a few youtube videos for what that's worth) that pot depth is the secret to accelerated growth of palm seedlings rather than pot width. Not sure if this is well known or has already been proven/disproven. Any input would be appreciated. Anyway... This is an experiment to see the difference in growth rate and health of 3 palms purchased as seedlings at the same time and exposed to the same conditions. The three plant selected are a few silver queens I purchased off of etsy. All three are around the same height and were all germinated/planted/harvested/shipped and repotted at the same time. All came from th…

Hi everyone! I have two beautiful potted Archontophoenix since 1 year. During the summer the growth was modest, but I didn’t notice any problem. since I moved the plants indoor during the fall, the growth proceed at a faster pace but some fronds are turning quickly brown and dry. I tried to do a shower to the plants but I didn’t notice any improvement. Any tips? The soil is always moist and there’s a discrete light . Much appreciated your help

Hyophorbe verschaffeltii - Spindle Palm

Grown from seed received from @PalmatierMeg several years ago, this and another nearly identical (same stone pot, same size) adorn either side of my garage front during the summer months but spend the winters in the conservatory. I move them in/out with a heavy-duty hand truck and tie-down strap, but they'll soon be too heavy for even that. Thanks, @PalmatierMeg. Six-inch rule for scale.

“Winged it” with a grow bulb + C. Cataractarum

So after a ton of research, I decided to “wing it” with a c. cataractarum and a grow bulb. My living room has next to no natural light and it was killing me not having a plant in the room. I used a plug-in pendant light hung from the ceiling and a GE grow bulb with a (cheap, $20, wasn’t willing to risk this failing on an expensive palm, haha) C. cataractarum. I am seeing solid results so far! It’s been about 2 months and this thing has fought off spider mites all while throwing out and opening 3 new fronds, with two large spears about to open now. I was worried about the fronds that don’t get a ton of light, but they just keep growing and I haven’t had a singl…

Today's Repottings and another newbie ?

I potted up my Lyto seedlings in as close to the Pal Meir mix as I could get. I used Monto Clay (yes, i spent too much money) and some Repti Bark at a 2:1 bark to clay ratio. I put them in 6" clay pots and was super careful with the roots because these plants were kind of expensive..... How soon should I fertilize or add plant food? They are super tiny, one still had part of the seed attached until I popped it out of the liner pot. I have Carl Pool palm food and Alaska liquid fish fertilizer. I also have a bottle of Super Thrive. I've never opened it but I did place the unopened bottle next to a struggling houseplant and it's since recovered I also fixed…

Hardiness in Pots

This question isn't necessarily limited to palms, but it's more of a general "plants in pots" question. I planted some bamboo in very large pots a few years ago, and when picking the species of bamboo, the nursery said that planting in pots could cause you lose up a zone of hardiness (so we picked a species that is one hardiness zone below me). It makes sense to me, since the roots are much more exposed to colder temperatures. Would love to hear others' experience/knowledge on how hardiness is affecting by planting in pots. Thanks!

Help! My majesty palm now has 3 brown leaves (out of 7 total) over the span of a week or so. The 4th frond is now becoming mostly brown, though has yellow. I move it to partial sunlight 5' from a window about 4 to 6 hours a day. I let it sit in the shower at night time for the humidity. It is in a bottom self-watering pot. https://i.stack.imgur.com/8Y3iF.jpg https://i.stack.imgur.com/keil7.jpg https://i.stack.imgur.com/L4Gi7.jpg https://i.stack.imgur.com/7PPrI.jpg

Sickly Kentia Palm
by Kae101- 0 replies

Hi there, I've been recommended this forum to help with sickly palms. Above is my gorgeous Kentia palm ive had about a month. He normally sits in the corner where he is about 3ft from a west faving window and about 10 from a ginormous 5 door patio window. I tried to make sure he was getting indirect light. I check his soil once a week for moisture levels and only water with rain water if the top two inches are dry. I water him in his nursery pot by watering him until they water runs through the drainage holes and then leave him to drain out. I mist him twice a week, again with rain water and sometimes give him a gentle dusting. During todays misting ive noticed about 3 of…

Reed palm with one rotted stalk

I have had a lovely reed palm for eight months now and she has been doing quite well... until recently. My kitten had started using her as her litter box, so I took out the root ball, shook off the extra soil, dumped the urine-soaked soil, and the repotted into a new pot of the same size with new soil. She was okay for about a week and then I noticed the leaves of two of the stems coming from the same stalk were dying quickly. I cut them away a few days ago, leaving one stem on the stalk. Last night I examined the stalk again and saw at its base it was black. I barely touched it there and the whole stalk broke off with white and black mush inside the base of the stalk. …

I came across a great article by Geoff Stein on indoor palms and I thought it was great enough to share. Most importantly, he names specific palms that can thrive indoors along with common pitfalls and marginal/poor indoor palms. Enjoy: http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/303#b

Hi, First time posting, been reading the forum for almost a year and loving the community. Found this palm on the side of the road - it was used to stage a house and discarded- it’s now inside, humidifier running as I have other tropical plants, and is raised up out of cat reach next to a North facing window due to space Apartment has 12’ high ceilings, I’ve also got large windows facing West and potentially a South facing window (if I move my tropics and succulents). The fronds are browning quite severely and I’m slowly increasing my watering as I don’t want to shock it. It has a new frond coming up and it’s still growing well despite the ic…

Why does my Parlor Palm have pale leaves?
by SunnySoCal- 1 follower

Having trouble figuring out the problem; there are also some brown spots, and not just on the tips- some of them are in the middle of the leaves. Really worried about mites, though it could also be because of a vent (which I moved it away from recently), or because our tap water has lots of lime. I mist it daily. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have had the potted palms in the linked pictures for more than 20 years. About a month ago, I repotted them for the first time in several years. At that time, the roots and stems looked healthy (no evidence of what I would recognize as root rot). However, since then the two plants have started dropping leaves from the bottom up. The stalks at first wilt, then dry up, and then turn brown/yellow. The discoloration occurs throughout the entirety of the stalk and leaves and not just at the ends of the leaves. In the pictures, the one palm may look elongated, but I think this is this is just reflective of the volume of leaf loss. I am at a loss for what may be…

Bismarckia nobilis spike stunt

I bought a young 3 Gal Bismarckia nobilis with 2 spikes 1 month ago. When it arrived it had a little nick in growth meaning it was not growing straight upwards, but making a little curve to the left. It seemed healthy apart from the oldest 2 leaves. To adjust to a straight growth I decided to repot without touching the root system and is now in a 7 gal, ever since those beautiful 2 spikes are not moving neither opening. Not sure if it takes time or the shipping was stressful (came from FL) stunt the growth or its boron deficiency? Or it takes time for them to open? My C.Fallaensis opened 2 spikes in no time

Palm Selection for Spring 2021. Thoughts? Tips?
by SunnySoCal- 4 replies

Somewhat new into the world of palms, but finding I really love them! Done a lot of research to figure out which ones I can winter indoors, and pretty sure I've made my selection. Feel free to add any thoughts, tips, species suggestions, or point out something I may be mistaken about. If I'm wrong about any of these and they don't make good plants for someone who's not all that experienced, please point that out! I'm only mentioning the ones that are more atypical as houseplants. Pics taken from google images since I don't have any of these species yet, lol. Ptychosperma elegans/Solitaire Palm- Chose this because a lot of sources have claimed it as pre…

My J Perakensis has some issues. I have 2 and both are in the same fast draining soil, same watering habits, but this one gave me always problems. is this magnesium/potassium deficiency or what is going on ? The long leave is the oldest one. I gave it a nutritional leaf spray but don’t think it will resolve the issue. They sit both in darker shade and never get sun exposure.

Howea Fosterena issues/bugs

Hi, A couple months ago I ordered a Kentia palm from an Etsy shop. I got 4 plants in a 1g pot. The smallest of the 4 had some serious browning, and one of the suckers eventually went fully brown and I cut it off. A day or so later, I saw a tiny ball of white fuzz on an opening leaf (mealybugs?) so I squished the bug, gave it a long shower, and treated it with insecticidal soap. Today, the tree that had the brown sucker on it felt really squishy and pretty much fell over, so I cut it off at the soil level. Do I need to dig up the roots and repot the remaining 3 Kentias, or will it be ok? Knock on wood I haven't seen any more bugs on this or any other of my…

I got hands on 2 germinated Silver Joey palm seeds from Hawaii and want to know how to proceed correctly when I get them? Repot them right away and keep them outside, we have around 78 F and it’s humid. Or still into the heated germination box potted or with spagnum? I don’t want to mess this up so any details are highly appreciated!
