Re-Pot Kentia Palm?
by Johnny_Sapphire- 8 replies

Just got a new Kentia Palm that's in one of those thin black plastic pots with holes in the bottom. I know Kentia's don't like being re-potted, so i had 2 questions. Seeing how close they are planted together in the black pot, should i remove the black pot and re-pot inside the white ceramic pot for more space or leave as-is? if leaving as-is, There is a 1" gap between the bottom of the black pot and the bottom of the white ceramic pot. Should this be fine for water drainage, or do i still need to drill a hole at the bottom of the white pot and put a thin plastic water tray underneath that? thanks in advance!

Removing soil around the rootball of a Roebelenii
by Palmfarmer- 1 follower

i have 3 fot Roebelenii that was doing fantastic outdoors. However it started deceling recently (new leaf tips started getting slightly yellow and it needed constant watering to not have the fronds hang) I think because it was so rootbound and the soil have gotton very compacted around the rootball. It had to be broken out of the pot. I Have bought a new pot for it that is around 25% bigger. I am wondering if the best thing to do is try and remove a good chunk of the bad soil around the rootball using a waterhose before replanting it in the bigger pot as it might not only have the issue of compaction, but buildup from bad things in the water & syntetic …

Palms (North -Facing Light)
by Born- 3 replies

See the attached photo. This room with the large windows faces the north. It brings in a lot of indirect light. Would Phoenix Robellinii and Trachycarpus Fortnei tolerate this light? There is no direct sunlight, but as you can see in the photo, it is extremely bright, indirect light. Thanks!

Terracotta funk

Most of my plants are in plastic pots, but I bought clay pots for my Lytos. They're indoors above the t.v. and under a grow light if that's relevant. But I keep getting what I'm assuming is white mold on the outside of the pots a few days after watering them. I've been wiping it off with disinfecting wipes a couple times a week, but how do I _prevent_ it? Google wasn't much help, other than the suggestion to seal the pots which kinda defeats the purpose of clay pots to begin with.

Pygmy Date Palm - am i doing it right?

Hi everyone. earlier today I picked up a pygmy date palm on a whim at Home Depot. I'm quite excited about my new purchase, but I want to ensure that i'm not messing something crucial up and that my palm will be as happy as possible. I currently have it in the plastic pot that it came in from home depot (pic included). Do i need to transfer it to a real pot with soil and etc, or will it be okay remaining in the planter it came in? If I do need to transfer it, do any of you have recommendations for good pots? I plan to keep the palm inside all year. obviously winters in Chicago are brutal, and summers are too unpredictable for me to eep it outside during the mont…

The Right Soil
by Born- 4 replies

Since becoming a member here, it is evident that there is a wealth of information on this forum. One subject that I have been reading about is soil. Many members here are not using “soil” at all, but more of a substrate. With all the success that others are having, the subject has made me curious about changing all my trees over to the “Pal” method. In order to start, do you remove all the earth from the rootball? Does this method work for all palms?

When to split up c. elegans clusters?

When should I split these guys up? I've seen this question asked before with replies like "survival of the fittest" and things like that, and I've def pulled a few dead little strugglers out - but the survivors in here are all growing like weeds and I can't help but think they'd do even better if they had more room to spread out. Would these also benefit from the @Pal Meir soil mix of bark and clay like my baby Wedds are in?

Germinating Kentia Palm Seeds Indoors - Any suggestions?

Hi All, I searched the forum for threads on starting kentia (Howea forsteriana) seeds indoors. I thought I saw some info in the past but now that I need it I can't locate. I just received 100 freshly harvested kentia seeds from a reputable grower in Santa Barbara, CA. Some good websites giving instructions recommend approx 10 seeds to an 8" or larger batch pots, potting mix with perlite, plastic covering and out of direct sun. I could do this but that would be up to 10 pots taking up space in the house. Has anyone been successful with the plastic bag method? I think that would take less space and soil mix. If so, what is your process? soil mix, # seeds p…

Hey everyone!! It recently rained last night, I went to go check on my plants this morning and noticed that my pygmy date palm was drooping. I went back outside when the rain dried out and saw that my pygmy date palm wasn’t drooping anymore. Any ideas of why this is happening?? (This may be a dumb question, but, I was curious.)

How to keep Christmas palms in containers small
by NOLAnuts- 0 replies
Hi, I am planting a small raised bed garden in New Orleans specifically to be a haven for green anole lizards. The star of the 4' x 12' garden will be 2 Christmas palms. I don't know if this is possible, but I'd love the palms to stay small - I love the size of the ones in the photo. Will growing the two of them in a single pot help me achieve this? I'm not a gardener and I'm from up north so this is my first palm tree experience. Just want to have a pretty tree and make the lizards happy. Thank you in advance for any tips.

Slow and Painful Majesty Palm Death
by sashawack- 5 replies

I've reviewed many of the posts on here about the challenges of keeping an indoor Majesty Palm alive, particularly in the North East where the weather is cold and base-board heating is the norm. We bought a beautiful Majesty palm from a prominent garden center in Boston, assured that it would be easy to manage. I'm embarrassed to say we didn't get a second opinion and spent significantly more than what many of you suggest these plants are worth. Regardless, I want to try to save the plant, if possible, but am really racking my brain. Today, i've moved the plant into an office in the very front corner of my house that gets the most sun of any room. We previousl…

Chamaerops fungus or tomentum?
by Keys6505- 6 replies

Howdy, can anyone tell me if this is fungus or tomentum? I first saw the spots on the leaves a few weeks ago but found a thread on here saying it wasn't unusual for Chamaerops to have white residue. It seems like it is much more abundant on the new leaves and the neighboring potted Trachy now has some white spots on the closest petiole as well(first pic Trachy, second and third pics Chamaerops).

Dypsis lutescens Dwarf
by PalmatierMeg- 1 follower

Dypsis lutescens can sometimes be found in several Dwarf forms - Thailand Dwarf and Vietnam Dwarf come to mind and there may be others. I've managed to kill off an example of each. I bought the Thai dwarf from a Seller who neglected to tell me he had just separated a cluster a couple days earlier and hadn't allowed it time to heal. I lost the thing to rot a couple weeks later. I lost my Vietnam dwarf when I asked a palm expert how to separate my over grown clump. "Aw, it's easy," he scoffed then told me to cut at will. I managed to destroy every cutting plus my mother palm. Never again, I told myself. About 8 years ago I managed to acquire another Vietnam Dwarf and t…

Washingtonia robusta pot bound
by LunaBlue- 7 replies
- 1.2k views
Hi, new to the forum and palms in general. I got this washingtonia robusta and was acclimatizing it when it started yellowing several fronds. I was super careful about watering, so couldn't be an overwatering issue. Possibly also shipping stress? Today I pulled it out of it's pot and turns out it was pretty root bound. And as such was not getting enough water maybe. Untangled the root ball a bit and potted up. Well draining potting mix. Any advice on how to help it survive? It will go out for the summer once the weather will be warmer. Location Estonia, so will stay in pot. Currently it is in the corner of east-south facing window. Is getting some hours o…

Dypsis lutescens seedlings.

I've been strategically separating and repotting my young crop of d. lutescens as they get larger. Their appearance as a solitary or double palm is quite striking compared to the tangled clusters they're usually sold as. I've been potting them into various fluted ceramic bonsai planters for a clean consistent look video-1619015342.mp4

Slow Growth Rate
by Born- 2 replies
Greetings PalmTalk, This is my first post. My passions are that I fly airplanes and grow palms. I have attached pictures of my two Trachycarpus Fortnei, one Phoenix Robellinii, and one Washingtonia Robusta. I have also attached my 2500 sq ft whole room humidifier that I use. Once a month, each tree is brought into the shower and, with warm water, I rinse each leaf and water the soil until there is drainage. As I live 2 hours south of Chicago, all trees are grown on the south facing windows in my condo. I am inquiring on how to slow the growth rate of the Washingtonia Robusta. Do I continue to use the small planter to prohibit growth height rate?…

Help with unwell Kentia palm
by TotheRescue2021- 1 reply

Hi there, my roomates plant isnt looking well and i want to help! Observations: Currently the Kentia is experiencing dying of lower foliage, and browing on some of the ends of the middle section leaves. Moreover there are some small brown patches appearing in some middle/upper parts of the leaves as well A few questions, it is potted in a smaller typical plastic pot, and this original pot has been placed into a larger "showy" one for aesthetics, however this larger pot is also filled to the top with soil....is this appropriate? or is the plant perhaps suffering from something like root rot due to there not really being a place for drainage as it can …

New majesty palm - what am I doing wrong?
by MaryKate- 1 follower

Hi there! I bought a majesty palm two weeks ago from a local nursery. A few days ago, I noticed that it was starting to lean (away from the sun, which is weird)...it's almost like the fronds can't support their weight? Now a couple of the bottom fronds look sick - I know this can happen, but I'm worried that I am doing something wrong. Does it look underwatered? I mist it daily to help with humidity until it is warm enough to sit outside. I am scared of overwatering it, and I'm just not sure what's going on...I know they can be tricky to please indoors, so I'm hoping that someone might have some specific tips to help! Can I try to stake it to help adjust the weird lean? T…

I just got this pindo palm(Butia Capitata) from our local nursery. The frond tips have started turning colors. Looks like white/grey color. Is this transplant shock or something else? Thank you for your time and help.

Hello all, I am new to the forums. I have 2 windmill palms and 2 pindo palms. I am having some problems with one of my windmill palms (Trachycarpus fortunei) . Details are below: -The center spear pulled and it's newest fronds also seem to be dying. -They just came out of the winter shelter 3 weeks ago. It basically just protects them from rain and wind during winter. -They have well draining soil. -I only water once the top 3-4 inches of soil is dry. -Fertilized for the first time this year today with JR Peters Jacks Classic Palm Food. -Once a week I have poured hydrogen peroxide into the crown. My question would be can this surv…
