Black spots on kentia
by HD3223- 2 replies
I've recently purchased a potted Kentia palm, overall it seems fairly jealthy. Possibly some potassium deficiency? Some of the lower leaves are a bit of a mottled colour. What's concerning me though is the sudden appearance of these tiny black dots on the stem. They start off looking like a bruise and then turn black, they aren't insects as I can't scrape them off. I've tried a fungicide but it looks a bit worse. Any ideas? https://ibb.co/4jXCs1N

I noticed today that my JXB started leaning, Is that natural for it or is their a problem? I got some potassium fertilizer on its way but something tells me theirs rot happening since the leaf is looking a bit weird at the bottom but it does have brand new growth but even that looking a bit damaged. When I walked out it was completely leaned over but I tilted it back up using one of its old strap leaf

Thought I'd share my progress in germinating robusta seeds. I am 40/40 in my first attempt germinating these. They are on my balcony which faces north, but I have a grow light which is kept on them at all times 6/23: peeled 40 seeds and placed in a solo cup of water -replace water daily 6/28: place seeds in a casserole dish with seed starter potting mix, make sure sand is damp but not soaked, cover with saran wrap and place on top of TV cable box 7/3: plant first 15 sprouts in old water bottles with seed starter potting mix and sand, left and a tray and bottom watered 7/8: plant 15 more sprouts 7/12: plant 10 more sprouts, largest…

Indoor Pygmy Date Palm - any advice?
by Molobrian- 7 replies
Hey there, I'm new to PalmTalk and very thankful for this community! Very cool to see so many enthusiasts. We're house plant nerds and have only ever lost one plant (dang hibiscus, just couldn't keep up), but definitely not experts. Our new pygmy date palm ("Big Boy") is making me feel a little nervous. We had just bought a new condo, so to celebrate, I bought this lovely 3.5-foot tall 3-stalk pygmy from the local nursery, which at the time was quite green and vibrant. It was in its regular temporary container for a few weeks, which made it difficult to water, but we did our best. At first we had him near the large windows, but in a more shaded corner. Now he's fully…

Hey all, I just noticed today while watering my Sabal Minor ‘McCurtain’ seedlings that a few of the seedlings had some holes in their strap leaves. I panicked a bit, as the two with the most damage are growing next to my fastest growing seedling, and I immediately researched what could be the problem. A few posts on here about similar damage to palms mentioned the possibility of really small caterpillars/bugs being a possible culprit and, sure enough, on the seedling with the most damage I noticed a VERY small caterpillar (or at least I think that’s what it was) and quickly squashed it. I’ve attached pictures of the damage and the best photo of the bug I could get fo…

Hey Guys, My Christmas Palm Seedlings are 11 months old. Out of 10 seedlings, Four are quite tall. The fourth frond on them is 17" high from the soil line. Is this a normal height for a Christmas Palm seedling at 11 months? Is it lanky or gonna be a big tree? Thanks a lot

Archontophoenix question
by Corrosion- 3 replies

Hey. I received this alexandra palm about 1.5 month ago, since then it has dried older leaves and grown perhaps 5 cm only. I checked the roots- the pot has not filled with rootball yet just some were visible. The new emerging frond looks also a bit dry and curly. Is that normal? I dragged it in just for the picture-usually it is outside on or sunny terrace. Thanks.

Weird Filibusta Leave issue?

I'm not really understanding why this leaf on my filibusta is getting holes in it and thinning out, Is it because it's getting direct burning sunlight or another problem? it's pushing new growth and the other leaves look normal and this is the only one of my filibustas doing this.

I was outside yesterday watering my plants and I felt the side of the bags and they are extremely hot! I don't know if this is a bad thing or could it harm my plants because I feel like I could easily cook on the plastic LOL, These are the bags. I'm not sure if I should do anything or if the plants will be fine because they are so hot to the touch or just keeping them watered enough

Hello. I have an indoor, well-lit area with a height of 5 meters. I had thought of putting a palm tree of this species in a pot, possibly because of its height it would live for many years to reach the ceiling but ... Does this species live well in a pot and indoors without direct sunlight? Thanks.

Licuala petiolulata

I recently picked up a licuala petiolulata from Bijan Tropicals on Etsy, I've had it for about six weeks now. It seems to have recovered nicely from shipping shock and is quickly pushing out a new frond. This is the first licuala I've bought online that's survived shipping (I've lost two l. grandis's to transport shock:/) so that's heartening! Does anyone have experience growing this palm indoors or have any general pointers about this species? Thanks in advance! Ravenea Care Questions

Twenty buck at Home Depot seems a steal for these. I inspected it for signs of scale and plane to wipe it down with horticultural oil just for good measure. Don't want to risk my other littler palms. Two questions: 1. Do I separate the two palms? I prefer singles to doubles with trunking palms. But I dont know how risky this will be. 2.Unique soil requirements? Likes a lot of water, so should i add some water retaining elements rather than my usual cactus/palm mix? Jim in Los Altos pointed out it likes magnesium. I'm wondering if since it grows near rivers if it might like more rocks/sand....?

We have been looking for a nice big indoor showy specimen for our family room and while at Lowe's a few weeks ago stumbled upon some really large ones for a surprisingly great price. Since coming home, the main spear has come up quite a ways, and we were treated with it unfurling just a few days ago.. Can't wait to see this one grow up! Brand new spear unfurling! Wish I lived in a climate that I could do these outside, but inside will have to do.

The Lyto which would not grow bigger
by Pal Meir- 3 followers

This is the story of the weakest of ten Lytocaryum weddellianum seedlings. In 2013 all other seeds germinated between April 01 and 26, only one small seed germinated much later on May 8 after 49 days (cf. pic #1). And this seedling N°1308 would not grow like its siblings and stayed small though it was the only single seedling which was planted since the beginning in a large Ø12xH12 cm clay pot (cf. pic #2). (The other five singles N°1301 to N°1305 had only tiny Ø8xH9cm clay pots.) So I checked the roots and was very worried (pic #3). The soil mix could not be the the reason because the other Lyto weddells were planted in the same mix. So I guessed it might be tha…

root pruning of tropical palm trees
by Marc Suhor- 2 replies

Dear forum, I ask you to share your experiences with root pruning of (sub-) tropical palm trees. Unfortunately, due to lack of space, it is no longer possible for me to choose ever larger planters for my home-grown palms. In the past I had no problems with root pruning with the following palms: phoenix dactylifera, Canary Date palm, Washingtonia robusta, Senegalese date palm (Phoenix reclinata) With my other palms I don't dare to prune the roots yet. When you see the damage to the leaves, it is usually too late or no longer reversible. You may have already pruned the roots of the following palms or have the knowledge/experience to prune the roots of such palms…

Young trachycarpus fortunei & robusta
by TokyoShowdown- 3 replies

Hey yall! I germinated some trachycarpus fortunei and washingtonia robusta 1-2 years ago. I live in Montana so I potted them to bring them indoors during the winter. I've noticed they tend to burn and the fronds crisp in direct sunlight here. They get plenty of water and right now I have them in the shade where they recover. Are they just too young for full direct sun at this stage? Are the roots getting too hot in the pots? What's strange is last year I had the WB out in full sun and they were doing great, but this year they get damaged.

sabal palmetto seedling needs

Good Evening, I have about 70 sabal palmetto seeds germinating. I am wondering if anyone knows what the light, water, and fertilizer requirements are for these. I can't seem to find anything for young plants. I am assuming not to fertilize the first few months. Water once the soil is dry. Do they get full sun or should they be in the shade? How old do they need to be so I can fertilize and put into full sun?

Rhapis humilis - leaves refuse to open
by LivistonaFan- 1 reply

I bought this Rhapis humilis in December 2018 and tried since to acclimate it to partial sun (from April to October, in winter it's indoors), which is why it may look a little rough. The biggest stem is slowly starting to push more compact fronds which is great, but one sucker hasn't opened its spears for about a year. What could cause this? December 2018: now:
