It was about -15F here the other night. I've got four of these (5 gal) S. eriopus that love going outside in the summer, but love coming back in for the winter time. Beautiful plants. Grown from seed - germinated in 2008. Someday they'll cone!

Should I separate majesty palms?

I recently bought three majesty palms growing together in one pot from Lowe’s hardware. I’ve had them growing like this for about two months and they’re doing well; however, I’ve heard that they will grow faster if separated. Should I separate them or is there too much of a chance I would harm the plants by doing so?

Pygmy Date Palm spots on leaves and yellowing
by AdamKocian- 3 replies

Hello, my potted Pygmy Date Palm has its old leaves yellowing and it looks like it has some spots too. Is that potassium deficiency? I’ve been using palm plant food, so not sure why it still has the issues. New growth is nice and green, just the older leaves get the discoloration. Please advise. Thank you!

I thought it might be interesting to gather some information about what the pros use: Tobias Spanner, the owner of Palme Per Paket, published the book "Das Palmen-Kulturhandbuch" 1999. He recommends these soil mixes: 30% {60%} Peat based soil mix or limed peat (pH 6) or coconut substrate (e g "Kokohum") 20% {10%} fine lime-free clay soil or loam 25% {15%} quartz sand 0-4mm 25% {15%} other mineral for drainage: pumice, perlite, vermiculite, LECA, Lavalit (crushed lava stone), Seramis (porous clay granulate from Germany), stone wool (such as rockwool) Up to 15% {20%} of pine barch humus or loose compost may be mixed in The figures with…

Separating queen palms

Hi all I rescued a few queen palms about 2 years ago that were pretty neglected. When I repotted them, I put the 2 smallest ones into a pot together, and they've both taken off and are growing well now. How risky would it be to split them up and repot them individually? I am in NZ so it is the middle of summer so am thinking of doing it fairly soon. They're about 2.5m tall or so from the bottom of the pot. A pic is attached. One of the other ones I rescued is growing well, but is quite wobbly in its container. It was in a bit of a wind tunnel area for a while, so maybe it had some damage from getting blown around a bit? I've got it in a more shelte…

Golden Cane Palms in Pots

Hello. I was wondering if these long pots are large enough for these golden cane palms 80cm long x 36cm wide? I want to put two containers of palms in each pot as a privacy wall. I was told they aren’t big enough and I need round pots but am worried these won’t fit in my space. I would like the trees to grow taller over time and not need to re-pot again. Any advice very appreciated. thank you!! https://imgur.com/a/eXjEINt

Which containers for mass seedling grow?
by BobStrauss- 6 replies
I'm wanting to get an indoor garage grow started for a large number (for me at least) of palm seedling, perhaps 200-300 at a time. Planning on several varities: livistona, w. robusta, butias, phoenix, jubaea, trachy, and chamaerops - hardy varieties that'll have a chance here in 8a. One aspect I need to figure out is which planter/tray setup to use to make things as easy/organized as possible. I've seen that some have used Stuewe & Sons systems (eg the D50 system, HIKO trays, etc). Is there a certain size "cone-tainer" that would be suitable for seedlings to remain in for a certain length of time? I know it likely varies greatly by palm type for what's optimal, …

Brown Spotting on Bangalow Palm
by HyperFluxM- 7 replies
- 2.5k views
Hi everyone, I bought a bangalow palm about 3 months ago. I keep it in my room which stays fairly humid and I keep it by the window which is facing north-west (I live in South Australia). I have recently potted it into a decently sized pot to make room for growth through 2022. Since I got the palm I have had a few smaller leaves dry up and die, I have been told this is natural for the smaller leaves to die off after time, is this true? I have not cut them off yet as I have also read that the palm should be allowed to do that natrually. The main issue that I am having now is brown spotting on some of the top leaves, it started off with a little bit but now there is a …

Hey guys! I bought a small (7") c. renda seedling from Hawaii about 10 months ago and have been trying to keep it happy here in my Seattle apartment. It's definitely had some ups and downs but I finally have it in a setup that it actually seems to like and wanted to share it on here. It's been in this new pot and setup for approx. 4 months now and it's FINALLY starting to push out new growth. I have it potted in a 10" lechuza classico self watering planter. It's planted in a homemade pon mixture composed of equal parts white pumice, black lava rock, red lava rock, (all of these 1/4" size), akadama, and zeolite. I keep the reservoir in the planter constantly f…

Hi everybody! I have a serious problem with germination of the coconuts. Many coconuts start to rot during the germination (some seedlings survive only). The surface of the coconuts and the embryo are covered with the white fuzzy / powder mold. I realize that the germination of the coconuts from the supermarkets is often associated with a high risk of failure, but if it is possible, I would at least want to minimize the formation of the molds on the coconuts. Since I grow the coconut palms indoor (I have a large south window where I grow my coconut palms for several years), I would like to use some natural (not chemical) fungicides. So far, I've only tried potassium …

First indoor season lighting woes
by Ricanstructed- 7 replies

Hi friends, Could use some help in selecting some more supplemental lighting for my girls here whose lower leaves are clearly not receiving enough light. What's in the lamps now are GE Lighting Grow Light PAR38 Light Bulb, Full Spectrum, 32-Watts. I'm thinking I need to add 2 spotlights (from above) on either side for both and am considering: https://greenlightdepot.com/products/led-ufo-high-bay-150w-hook-mount-tempered-glass-ul-dlc There are quite a few options on that site and I'm very sorry to ask for so much effort from you more seasoned folk to take a look at what I'm considering, but if you are so inclined I'd be very grateful (and so would my poor palma…

Has anyone tried Happy Frog potting soil from Fox Farms with their palms? I can get a pretty good deal on a 2 cubic feet bag, and I’ve seen pretty good reviews on this medium… just none regarding palms, yet. Otherwise, are there any other potting soil/mixes that would be recommended?

Bringing the indoor palms out for a shower
by Dimimelbourne- 0 replies

It’s been getting slightly warmer here in Melbourne, so I thought I would take the opportunity and give some of my indoor palms a shower. It’s been a pretty hectic year and I haven’t been as vigilant as I could have been. Unfortunately my C. Renda looks like it’s been a snack for some kind of pest over winter. I gave it a really good spray with the hose so I’m hoping that bumped most the pests off. I’ll try and do this more regularly now that it’s warmer. I repotted my Licuala ramsayi earlier this year, it was in some very dry soil mix and when I took it out of the pot, all the media just fell away from the roots. I tried to pack in as much soil around the roots as …

Potted Christmas Palm Dying - HELP!
by Sadplantmom- 19 replies

Hi all! I got this huge potted christmas palm tree on Oct 29 (prob over 12 ft tall) - I had meant for it to go out on the terrace but quickly realized that it would be too cold in NYC for it right now and brought it inside for the winter. It’s been less than 2 weeks since I brought it home, and I’ve noticed that some of the leaves have started turning fully brown. I want to act quickly to turn this around but I am so bad with plants! A few questions: 1. Does anyone know what could be the issue? How can I rectify this? 2. Is there anything specific I can be doing to ensure it survives? 3. How much water should I be giving it and how often? Some online forums say …

Kentia palm - is it over-potted?
by elsi- 2 followers

I bought Kentia palm in 22cm pot (the photo in a box). I repotted the Kentia into 33cm pot as the original pot was broken. I haven't touch much the root and kept the surrounding old soil. Only put new soil around it. I used Plant mix (Kings House Plant Mix - 10l | Compost and Mixes | Kings) about 8 litre. It has been only one day since repotting. I am a bit scared if I used too big pot. It seems like more pale and yellowish leaves with wet top soil. How long should I wait to see if the top soil and deep soil dry? Should I leave it outside (under the sun with roof) to dry or bring the plant inside? I will use indoor 43cm cache-pot.…

Help reviving indoor Licuala grandis 1 2

Hey all, I have a recently acquired l. grandis that's not doing well and I was hoping for any tips to keep her from dying. I received it in the mail from FL four days ago (I'm in Seattle) and has been declining since arrival. The first picture is the first day it arrived and unboxed (I just put it in the sun to take the picture, it doesn't get sun on the leaves regularly). The second two are from this morning. Fronds that were green are now brown and very crispy and the fronds seem to have all closed back up, gotten skinnier. It's next to a west facing window that gets lots of bright light but the sun never hits the palm directly. My home is kept at 65% humidity via…

Lodoicea maldivica coco de mer in conservatory

Lodoicea maldivica, coco de mer growing in the conservatory at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. It’s grown a lot since I visited years ago. The top frond is pushing up against the glass ceiling. Even at this immature stage, truly gigantic proportions; seems so other-worldly as its scale and proportions have no relation to anything around it or to what most would encounter. The staff horticulturalist mentioned to me that they have plans to raise the glass ceiling to accommodate this specimen.
