First attempt at Cocos nucifera bonsai
by PsyPalm- 3 replies

About a week ago I picked up a small cocos nucifera from a local plant shop here in Seattle. Last night (after some deliberation and a whiskey or two) I decided to try and turn it into a bonsai piece. This is my first ever attempt at bonsai as well as my first time growing cocos nucifera so I'm prepared for disaster lol. I just wanted to share some pics of the process with you guys and see what you think My thinking is over the next few months the roots will grow down into the media of the bonsai pot, so when I remove the upper plastic sleeve I'll be able to remove the lava rock from underneath the coconut and have it be elevated above the soil on it's roots like…

Solitary/single trunk dypsis lutescens.

Hey guys! Over the past year and a half I've been playing around with different methods of growing d. lutescens. Seems like they are kind of Honda Civic of indoor palms in the sense that they are very common and inexpensive, so I started with a few clusters of approx 20-30 small seedlings and split some of them up individually into their own pots as well as some into smaller groups. I'm a big fan of potted palms grown as solitary/single trunk specimens and I wanted to see how d. lutescens would do in that format, especially because I feel like I've never actually seen them grown to maturity as single trunk palms, seems like they are pretty much exclusively grown in clu…

One Cheap Hack: ..Extra space on a budget

Yep, i'm cheap.. What can i say Having a bunch of Scarlet and Mealy Cap Sage, and some other easy, non- woody things to start this year, was looking for an easy way to create as much space for starting plugs ( to be transplanted around the yard / into bigger pots later ) w/ out having to spend much, if any extra for pots.. let alone using something everyone probably has laying around the house.. No doubt this probably isn't anything new, but thought i'd share anyway for anyone looking to start a bunch of annual or easier perennial -type plants using pots you probably have, and saving some $$. Dilemma: Lots of seed to start, don't want to just spread the …

I need your advice. On Saturday, I will receive a Cocos Nucifera from someone, which does not grow well in this person, because it is too dark in the apartment and there is no adequate air humidity there. I would like to provide the palm with the best possible conditions. All I know is that the palm was purchased by this person 4 months ago. Over a week ago, it was transplanted. The flowerpot has no drain, although it has expanded clay at the bottom. The leaves from the purchase in the store were said to be torn and brown at the tips. But apparently one leaf this palm developed. My questions are: 1. How to secure a palm tree for transport by car (I live in Poland, zone …

Another germination question, seems like that's all I've been posting lately. Anyone had any success germing Dypsis marojejy/ coursii? Being a high land plant, I'm guessing high temps aren't needed? I'm thinking 12 to 25 degrees Celsius?

Frond collapse

I have a Washingtonia Robusta. It is a strong tree. The “soil” is extremely well-draining and only gets watered when needed. No overwatering; no underwatering. Humidity is at 53% and sits at a South-Facing window. Yesterday, as I was filling up my Whole-Room Humidifier, and I noticed the large green frond has folded in like an accordion. Thoughts on this?

desert palms indoors

I was wondering why desert palms arent grown indoors more often. It seems a common problem with indoor palms is low humidity. But all that I can think of come from wet environments. Could a brahea or washingtonia do well indoors. Well not exactly a desert palm, they are related to one, the pygmy date is probably the closest and they seem to do well indoors. Perhaps the thorns or light issues are why.

Bamboo Palm | First Plant

Hey folks. I am new here. I am new to plant care. I received this pretty, tall "Bamboo Palm." I have had issues identifying specifically what it is, so that I can find care tips for it. All I could really do was get a general sense looking at similar palms (cat?). I thought I was doing terribly because the car ride home stressed it out quite a bit, but its actually held up pretty well the last few months. I noticed some new leaves developing. I live in the pacific northwest. A lot of tutorials I've seen mention that one should remove dust from the plant? That seems a bit meticulous, as I don't have a traditional feather duster. The seller told me to water it once a …

Large Howea Forsteriana transportation

Hey all! I'm buying a fairly large (3m) Kentia for a client and was wondering if anyone here had any advice or experience transporting a palm that size (attached a pic from the seller for reference). I rented a panel van and my plan was to just seal the dirt in the pot with newspaper and duct tape and then tie all the fronds up together and put it in the van sideways, lmk what ya'll think haha. Thanks in advance!

Flourescent lights?

So, I might have mentioned this once or twice - I'm the manager of a hotel. I also might have mentioned this once or twice but I live in apartment that Troy McClure would describe as "cozy" (Simpsons reference) We have a room with 3 industrial hot water boilers that is always stupid hot and humid, but the lighting in there is flourescent tube lighting. These lights are on 24/7/365. Would this work as a de facto greenhouse and/or could I plop a couple pots in there and have them grow more successfully than in my apartment under LED grow lights? Is this going to be a random science experiment? Thoughts and opinions all considered.

size and sources of pots for palms?
by MarkbVet- 2 followers

Hi, I'm growing a variety of palms (Sabals, Trachys, Braheas, etc) in pots for the next 4-5 years, until I can put them in the ground. Looking for recommendations of how large a pot I should provide, to allow for good root and plant growth, but also to allow for moving the pots into protected areas in winter. Is 10-15 gallon big enough, with fertilizing, to allow decent growth and size over a 5 year span? Any sources of plastic pots that don't cost a lot? I bought some grow bags, but larger ones are not as sturdy for the weight of soil as I would like... I worry about damaging roots when moving them around. So would prefer solid plastic pots. Any ideas?

Joey Palm death spiral - What's going on with the new spears?

Can anyone tell by the photos below of the small newly emerging spear and the tall unfolding spear of my potted Joey palm (Johannesteijsmannia altifrons) if this appears to be signs of overwatering or underwatering or attempted recovery of either? Four weeks ago I noticed drying older leaves and I assumed it needed water. Upon inspecting closely, I was alarmed to see that the small emerging spear was papery grey (texture almost like a wasp nest) and somewhat spiraled trying to unfurl way too prematurely. The long spear was now unfurled and spreading out to the normal diamond shape. As you can see in photos below, the 3 or 4 latest leaves still seem okay; but I hav…

Cheap seedling protection setups?
by Keys6505- 1 reply

So the rats and squirrels keep getting my seedlings. I finally rigged up a setup with some stackable plastic shelving with some bird netting wrapped around it and it seemed to be enough of a deterrent but the friggin things got in there and tore everything up again. They either chew the seedling off at the soil line or just yank it straight out of the dirt. I'm probably moving in the next 6 months or so, so not looking for any permanent setup, I'd rather have something I can get rid of before I go so I don't have to move it. I looked into propane tank cages laid down on its back but they are kind of pricey for a temp fix. Also considered dog crates but I think the hol…

I mail ordered this juvenile Bottle Palm (Hyophorbe lagenicaulis) a month ago and put it out in full sun on the patio. Since the stems had a reddish cast, I didn’t worry very much when the fronds started turning red. It was rather pretty actually. But now it’s clear that I have badly sunburned the palm. The palm came with only two fronds. Since both fronds are “toast” (pardon the pun) what are the chances of survival? As you can see, there’s a new frond coming in. But can the palm survive without photosynthesis until it does? I have moved it to less sunny location (AM direct sun only) but what else can I do? Grateful for the guidance.

Grow bags? Cheap nursery pots with saucers?
by JohnAndSancho- 1 follower

So, I need to repot several palms in various larger sizes. I will try and find nicer pots for the Indoor Squad, but for the Patio Squad I really don't care about looks. (I will regret this come next winter when I need to bring everything inside, as I currently have ~40 palms huddled under grow lights that I can't water) - anyway. Grow bags vs nursery pots? Looking for opinions. Also, if anyone has a source for cheap nursery pots with saucers, I'm here for it. I need a variety of sizes (3 gal, 5 gal, 7 gal and 10 gal) - currently, everything I need is either out of stock or stupid crazy expensive unless I buy 100. I hate this because I'm going to end up with l…

Dumb Lighting Question/Palm Recommendations

So, I have a largeish south facing window in my office. I'm sure the glass has at least some degree of UV protection since the building was built in 2018. There is no shade. Would this be considered full sun? Also open to suggestions on seedlings I could stick in the window. I've got some year or so old A. Tuckerii seedlings that have been on my patio I could bring to work, but I'd like to fill the windowsill. I cooked some d. Lutescens and an Aloe Vera just to give y'all an idea of how much sun this window gets. Currently battling sugar ants and their accompanying aphids too, based on all the little tiny sticky specks I see on everything other than the snake…

Here’s a quick video of my palm seedling collection that I have set up in my garage. Now that the weather is hopefully switching to a more cozy temperature I’ll probably move these back out to the covered patio. Although most of these look pretty happy in here I need the space back in my tiny garage. IMG_9574.MOV

I recently moved to a new apartment with south/east facing windows, so I'm getting constant sunlight. Any insight would be much appreciated! Got this back in July 2021 It's in a 14" pot Not quite sure what the soil mixture is like, but it's fast draining Placed in shade and still receives upwards to 1000 foot candles of light. I water when the top 2/3 inches of soil are dry. I water it in the bathtub and I let it dry out before placing it back in the clear container -- is it fine to use this clear container? Have not fertilized 2 new fronds have opened up, 1 is growing

Ponytail Palm in Trouble...
by shahram0- 2 replies

We've had a ponytail palm for over a year. The fronds regularly turn brown, starting at the tip, and then entirely. This has been going on since we got the plant as a gift. The soil is Miracle-Gro. We only water when the soil is dry (we use a houseplant water meter to test). The soil is dry every 10 days or so (I know that is less than the recommended watering schedule). I've tried watering less, but that only seems to increase the browning. I'm wondering if I'm watering too little (despite the ponytail general recommendation)? Sure would appreciate some advice... Thanks,
