Grow lights - picture/discussion thread

Hey guys! I thought it would be cool to start a thread of grow light setups as well as just people's cool/creative indoor palm arrangements. I've installed a number of different grow lights in my place and wanted to share with you guys as well as just get a thread of pictures and discussion about what has/hasn't worked for us. I always love seeing what people do with their indoor space! Here's a list of the grow lights I've used: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1UAJP4JW5RVS8?ref_=wl_share The 75W Bozily ones are the most effective as far as par value, those are the main ones that I use everywhere. The other ones are less powerful but add a really nice ambi…

Adding marine sand to a potting mix
by SoulofthePlace- 1 follower

What do you think marine sand will do to palm seedlings or small plants if marine sand is added to the potting mix while transplanting little palms? We don't have normal yellow construction sand available on the island and therefore everyone uses the grey marine sand (occasionally with some small shells) for construction purposes and after a few years salt crystals are coming out of the walls damaging painted surface etc. Now if I add say 30% of marine sand into the potting mix for better drainage along with perlite, do you think it can potentially damage the potted plants? The marine sand is piled up in the county enterprise and is for sale and it's there for an unknown …

I germinated a pair of Sabal Bermudana seeds about one month ago (first pic is from May 1) and sowed then after and have had them covered to keep moisture in and on a heat mat. Still haven’t seen anything pop up above surface of soil yet and I’m wondering if they might be dead or are just really slow

Badly cut Phoenix Canariensis Please HELP!
by Luca Vit- 4 replies

Dear all, I found this great community by desperation! Today my father, God knows why, trimmed my two 18 year Phoenix Canariensis with a saw and this is the result. the plants live in central Italy west coast near Rome and the seaside, Zone 9b. Now at the end of July it is very hot with temperatures exceeding 32° C - 90° F This is an area where in past years this kind of palms have been decimated by red awl or rhynchophorus ferrugineus. What can I do? Thanks for helping

Easy Office Palm
by EvanM- 13 replies

Hi y’all, new to Palmtalk, currently have a Phoenix roebelenii and a Chamaerops humilis in outdoor pots at home (zone 8a, the Phoenix is garaged during winter nights). I’m looking to add a (low-maintenance) office palm to the mix. Office situation is as follows: - One large, east facing window (whose blinds I keep closed, so it’s rather dark). - AC is run at night during the summer, turned off during the day. I don’t run the heat in the winter, but my coworkers run theirs, so my office stays above 60 or so. Is there anything meeting these criteria? If not, what do I need to change? I’ve heard Chamaedorea elegans is pretty rugged, would that be a good plant …

Hi! I'm new here. I bought a small Phoenix canariensis 3 weeks ago, my intention is to plant it on the ground when it gets bigger. It came in a small plastic nursery pot and I left it there for a week so it could get used to it's new home and then repotted to a bigger terracotta pot. I live in Gijon, north of Spain and our weather is mild, rarely goes below 0°C during winter and is usually 19-23°C during summer, but it rains quite a lot. There are lots of Phoenix canariensis around, in parks, yards... My palm is on the porch, having full sun during the afternoon, and protected from the wind but not the rain. It looked pretty healthy except for some black spots in the base…

Christmas Palm in NYC Disaster - Pls Help!
by Sadplantmom- 3 replies

Hi all! Last fall, I acquired a large Christmas Palm that I brought to my apt in NYC. The palm started to rapidly decline, but I believe it was just shocked and getting used to the new environment. By spring it was opening up many new fronds and I was so happy that it wasn’t fully dead. I have been battling spider mites on this thing for months and unfortunately the mites have been winning. I have tried everything - spraying them down with water, neem oil, insecticidal soap, and most recently Nuke Em. Last month I brought the palm outside to begin spraying it with Nuke Em every two- three days, and three of my newest and biggest fronds snapped!!! I am so dev…

Hi! I bought a Dypsis lutenscens two monts ago. It was small and it came in a 17 cm/2L (I believe it's 7 inches/0.5 gallons aprox). I repotted it into a 26 cm/7L (10 inches/1.6 gallons). It doubled it's height and the roots are coming out of the drainage hole already. I also dislike the potting mix I used, it doesn't drain well enough. I learned a lot about soil mix recipes here and I'm now mixing it myself. All I can find is that Areca palms like to be a bit root bound and to repot eery 2-3 years but I don't think I should let any plant with the roots coming out of the drainage hole. What do you think? Should I repot it now or wait? What size would you recommend? I don…

Sick Bismark Palm
by Sean8472- 5 replies

Hi All, I bought this Bismarck about a month ago to try and nurse it back to life. It was cheap considering the prices and availability in San Antonio. I have two other ones about 2-3in shorter trunks that look great and have double the fawns. All are in sunny spots getting 12+hrs of sun everyday. I had to cut one frond off as soon a I got it because it was all spotty black, brown, green, and yellow. I'm not quite sure what is wrong with it? I was going to try and remove all the soil, wash the roots, and see if any are rotting. Then clean the pot and use new soil. Thoughts?

Hey everyone, I have a windmill palm tree in a planter pot on my balcony. This spring I trimmed the branches since they seemed to be browning and had some black spots. There were also some branches which had grown but not opened yet. Its now been a couple months and the sprouted branches haven't opened up, and they've turned really brown. I've been watering it properly but it doesn't seem to be helping. Any ideas? It was originally potted about 3 years ago and I can't fit it in a bigger pot, I was hoping to keep it in the same one. If I re-pot it in the same pot with fresh soil, would that help? Thanks! John

Another watering question
by JohnAndSancho- 1 follower

Since SE TX just straight up skipped spring and went right into summer temps, I'm obviously gonna be watering more - a lot more. Will there be any harm from adding diluted fish fertilizer to each watering? Should I buy some liquid seaweed or kelp too? I've got a few repots and added some slow release (Carl Pool) to the soil to a couple of them. Is this a bad idea? Also have some Jobes palm food (4-4-4) My goals are healthy, heavy dark green palms that will make me hate myself in winter. I'd also like to see my 7g queen clear the roof, and possibly get a nasty note from the apartment manager. Also revive Dirty Sanchez to his former glory.

Haven't found much info on this. I'm about to pull the trigger on 3 of these for Patio Squad https://www.homedepot.com/p/Bloem-Veranda-Square-18-in-Black-Plastic-Deck-Box-Planter-57918/301861604 My palms are in a mix of upcycled grower pots, some grower pots, and Bloem Lucca. The Bloem are my favorite due to the removable saucers and the lips that make them easy to move. Plus they look nice. I did a search here for Bloem and literally every post was mine lol. Anyway - what do y'all like? What's y'alls favorite?

Watering Palms

I'm just curious to know is it ok to water palms on the leaves, Like using a shower setting on the hoes and spraying the plants and soil because when I water my palms I always try and be super careful and only wet the soil and it takes sooooooo long to water each and every palm because I can't just water them altogether at the same time. If theirs a better solution to watering I'm all ears

Fertilizer Recs?

Any fertilizer suggestions for a semi-novice that tends to struggle with appropriate measurements?!? I worry about not using enough but then also overdoing it! Are the spikes any good? I just moved to south Florida and have really taken advantage of it with my palm collection, but am limited to having them in pots for the foreseeable future. Any (affordable and easy to find) recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Dessicated leaves
by Mag- 5 replies

Help! I got my very first palm - Livistona Rotundofilia a month ago and she seemed to be doing fine until... well, I repotted her a few days ago and upon a closer look noticed that some leaves look dessicated. Also, she has a new leaf but it is growing veeery slowly. She was standing in a south facing room but in a rather darkish corner. I have moved her to a brighter spot. What else can I do? I guess she might not have had enough nutrients, the soil was very hard but I did water and misted her regularly. I love her and it kills me to think she is unhappy.

Learning! Potted King Palm help!
by Allison W- 8 replies

New to California and to Palms. Really trying to figure out the watering demands of potted palms. I had hard time finding info on King Palm potted indoors. I have great mixed indirect and direct light. The King was doing well for about 3 weeks until last week. One of the tri stems (?) st bases started hanging down/droopy, a few leads flat out dried up brown, some larger tips are fraying and browning. Tried extra water keeping meter in more upper moist (previously keeping low moist since thought maybe was overwatering before). Seems to maybe improved some with actually more watering keeping mid upper moist zone in moisture meter about 6” down) but I truly don’t know ho…

Life after spear pull?

Hey all Looking for some advice on whether or not I can save this howea forsteriana. It's most recent spear was emerging as usual over the the winter/spring then about a 6 weeks ago it very quickly dried out and died. (The other kentia it's sharing a pot with is still growing normally so I'm not sure what happened :/ ) Last week I gave the desiccated spear a tug and it popped right out. I know this is pretty much a death sentence but strangely the single remaining frond is still very healthy looking and feeling. The petiole on the remaining frond is firm, dark green, and none of the pinnae are showing any signs of decline usually associated with a dying frond. …

Stains on the leafs of the coconut palm
by Ilovepalm- 1 follower

Hi. In May, I bought a nice healthy coconut palm. I look after her in such a way, that she is in a palm pot with an adapted substrate mixture. At the bottom of the pot there is expanded clay and burned holes. I have a temperature of 27-30 Celsius in my room. Every day coconut is sprinkled with warm water or a humidifier is used. I water about once a week either on the saucer or alternately from the top. Twice a week I put him in a steamy bathroom for a few hours. Despite this, ugly spots appeared on the leaves of the palm tree. I don't know if it's a mushroom? I must admit, that I recently had a massive spider mite attack. Now, it is calm for now. I live in Poland, so the…
