Dypsis Plumosa Troubleshooting
by kevojax- 0 replies

I have a Dypsis Plumosa I purchased last summer. It's been chilling in this part-shade spot since then, only taking it indoors during the recent cold blast. Not fertilized yet this season, gets regular water, and all of a sudden these past couple weeks the whole plant is just turning from green to a greenish-brown. It has seen some cold (mid-30's at the lowest), though all three shoots have new fronds coming (though also brown-looking). Is this just the end of winter, or should I be concerned? Really love this one so want to catch anything problematic early and treat appropriately. I am planning on upping my pot size later this Spring. Thanks!

Hello everyone, I just bought my first Kentia palm two weeks ago. Palm looked fine (but I did not check every single leaf). Repottet it after I arrived home as the palm was just in a tiny thin plastic container. Did not add fertilizer and watered it two days later. Sprayed it with water twice since then. Just use filtered water (as we have chlorined tap water). I am in Brisbane (Australia) so it should not be to cold or dry for the palm in general. Now two days ago I notices those spots on the plant (see pictures). And I am worried now as I can not find something online so far which looks similar to this and it gets worse every day! I do not want my plant to die…

The downsides of indoor jungles

I have plants stacked on plants. No idea how many, in the hundreds. I love my palms and plants but it's also work. I always have weeds, and pest problems arise. And I have so many plants that I sometimes miss some when watering. Having plants underneath other plants means problems can run amock for some time without me realizing it. I also constantly burn fronds that grow too close to the grow lights. I'm currently watering once a week and it takes 20-30 minutes. Grow box gets watered daily and I have to refill the humidifier. Takes 5-10 minutes, not bad. Currently have these little white pests, there are millions. Only way I know to handle an infe…

Livistona chinensis issues
by JLM- 1 follower

My livistona chinensis is having issues. Not sure what the cause is. I had left them both outside during a light freeze, but they were up against the house and probably didnt event experience such temperatures. This was over a month ago, and i doubt its causing it. The other thing is that they were inside for 5+ days for the Christmas freeze event. The issue is that the lower fronds have died, and now the upper fronds are slowly turning brown starting from the end of the fronds and going towards the petiole. I will post pics soon.

Does anyone have much experience for this sort of mix with palms? Trachycarpus in particular? It seems very woodchip heavy. I'll try to get a photo in a minute, but it just seems strange to me to have so many woodchips instead of soil.

For the last two years, I have stored my Foxtail in my heated Garage next to a south facing window. This palm is already all the way at the ceiling (10 feet). I am sure that with the new growth this year it won’t fit in there anymore. I was wondering how others deal with larger specimen Palms that don’t fit upright into the House or garage anymore. can you lay them sideways? I did look at places to store it but find that the closest place charges quite a lot to store this palm and not knowing if it would survive there I was contemplating planting it and building a multiwall cold frame around it and giving it supplemental heat. But what are the chances for that to …

Are there any issues with going immediately to a larger size pot that is expected to be the palm's permanent home, such as going from 7 gallon to 25 gallon?

Building a Conservatory
by SeanK- 5 replies

I live in the Atlanta area with a USDA minimum of 10ºF. I am interested in building a conservatory that can overwinter some subtropicals that I can enjoy during the cold months. Could plants survive if they're planted in the soil inside this structure? How much heat would have to be applied given that there would be glass on the south side of the building? I know coconuts and lipstick palms won't survive, but maybe Pigmy Dates and some citrus hybrids?

Help with sick Kentia Palm
by LukeFl- 0 replies

I got my Kentia Palm (as is typical, multiple plants in one pot) in September. It's mostly been okay, but the last few weeks have seen some problems, It seems at least one of the specimens is very sick, sadly. It's gone brown and dry in parts. I've been watering every week, in almost every case the top inch was dry before I watered. I've sometimes been sip watering - just giving a glug at a time - which I now know to be incorrect. I fertilised once or twice with organic sea shell fertiliser plus a bit of used coffee grounds. The plant's fronds had black spots on the underside even when healthy. I did look them up when I first got it and something I read made me…

Hoping this trick will work

Potted this new R. Baueri this weekend. Occurred to me I had some solid black poly rubbish bags about the same size as the pot on hand, so cut one to size and cut several drain holes. If the trick works in a few years time when palm is too large I just lift it out and my $100 pot is all good for another use. Anyone done this before and were you pleased you did?

What's wrong with my Kentia palm?
by kentia- 1 follower

Hello everyone! I bought it about one month ago, had a few totally brown leaves which I've removed from the bottom. I'm watering it once per week after I make sure the first 2 inches of soil are dry. The humidity is low, only 40% (already ordered a humidifier for it), I'm spraying some water on it each morning that I hope it helps. What are these brown/black spots on the stems? Should I worry?

dumb question about pot holes
by miamicuse- 4 replies
- 1.3k views
OK this may be a very dumb question so please excuse my ignorance. I have always seen plastic nursery pots with holes at the bottom. Sometimes one single hole in the middle, sometimes three or more at the bottom or right at the edge. I bought a new plant last week from a nursery and it has two holes not at the bottom, but about 2 inches from the bottom along the side of the pot. I was just curious if that is something done for a specific purpose. What comes to mind is by doing so the bottom 2" of the soil will stay moist? Or if the plant roots grew it will not grow out the bottom hole but out of the side where it will be noticed?

C. Elegans pollination and germination

Hi all, I am happy to find this site because it seems having lots of useful information about palms! I have three C.Elegans in a pot (age 16-17?) and I'd like to pollinate and get some seeds from it, but it was really hard to find someone who did this. My palms are about to bloom and maybe 2 are female tree and the other one is male tree. If pollination is successful, I'd like to germinate the seeds. .. If you have a experience pollinating and germinating C.Elegans, please share some information about it. (I've cared for them since I was a kid, so germinating seeds from them would be a special meaning to me)

New Kentia palm. When to repot and separate?
by Nick215- 2 followers

Hi. I received a Kentia palm for Christmas and am very excited. It came as a cluster and is a bit bigger than anticipated. I prefer the look of single specimens, but don't to kill my new plant. Based upon what I read in other palm talk threads, my plan is to do the following: 1) Let it settle into it's new home for a few months by leaving it in the original nursery pot. 2) In a month of two, carefully separate the plants and repot them. I was thinking of putting each in 1 gallon nursery pots. Does that seem like a reasonable approach? In addition, how much attrition might I likely see? There appear to be 7 plants in this cluster. If I lost one or two, it …

Cyrtostachys renda indoors 1 2 3

I haven't got one yet, but I'm thinking about getting a Cyrtostachys renda seedling to grow in a pot outside and take it in for the winter. Should I only take it in when temps get below 50, and back out as soon as it heats up, or should I just take it in all winter? How much sun, how much water, will it even survive long with the low indoor humidity? Thanks, Keith

This is my coconut tree that I ordered online when I first unwrapped it and a week later after repotting it. When I took it out of its original pot I noticed the roots were cut to fit the pot. Does anyone know what it’s turning brown from. I was thinking maybe transplant shock. Will it be able to survive?

Seedling setback

My Chrysalidocarpus (dypsis) leucomalla was doing so well. I learned early on it doesn't like any extra water but I think I still hurt it by watering it to soon and it's having a tough time recovering. I moved it to a spot where I think it gets more indirect light but less from the south. Before injury (I think from watering early) and after:

PHOENIX ROEBELENII Can I save this palm? PLEASE HELP
by Guest Dave L- 2 replies

Hello and thanks for reading I have a temperature controlled tropical glasshouse in western Pennsylvania. I have a total of 10 palms including 2 phoenix roebelenii....all have been in my glasshouse about 3 years. I think I am losing one, but I can't be certain. It appears to be getting far more yellowing on the fronds than it has in the past. As well, the new seeds are brown and quite dry (crispy). The other is also growing seeds now, but they look very good. I am attaching two photos in hopes someone can advice me. Is this is fact dying? Can it be saved? Or should I be seeking a replacement? Many tha…
