Everyone got fed with filtered water, a drop of Super thrive, and 1/3 strength Alaska Fish Emuslion today minus the seed pots. They got water and positive reinforcement. L. Chinesis, D. Lutescenens, c. Cataractarum, Queen Palm, 2 Majesties, a C. Macrocarpa that I'm not sure is still alive, and W. Robusta that I finally took the Xmas lights off of. Probably gonna restring the Xmas lights tonight just because I'm bored.

Is my Ptychosperma lauterbachii suckering at this size?
by LivistonaFan- 3 replies
Today I discovered these green shoots and I wondered if these might be suckers? If that is the case, why aren't they at soil level? For those wondering, these cannot be seeds germinating in the bases of the petioles, because this plant is not a recent acquisition(I have grown it for 2 years now, I believe).

What is it?

Noticed this palm in a hotel. Definitely not the typical Kentia or Majesty. I'm not as well versed as many here so I thought I'd throw it to you all... The petiole is rather golden/yellowish.

Potted successes - so far…

Livistonia chinensis - two in 14” pots, one in the ground. They need root space. I have one in the ground WAS a beautiful potted houseplant - okay for two years. However, it started to fail indoors. It’s a very easy plant so I know that my inside light and environment won’t cut it. It is now quite happy in the ground and growing well. SO easy that I am growing 2 more as potted ones but Outside plants. So far so good, even over the Christmas freeze - with No protection! I was really surprised. Dypsis decaryi - I potted this tree in order to maintain its size to a moderate height. Ive had it in this 24” pot for going on 3 years. It has become a perennial (see my…

Desperate to save these seeds!

Greetings. This is my first post here after a nice read of several posts. My parents were active IPS members and I inherited a bag of palm seeds including Tectiphiala ferox, Sabal maritiama, Arenga australasica, Actinorhytus calapparia, Dypsis lanceolata, and Coccothrinax argentta as well as some unlabeled seeds. I don't know how old these seeds are but they are certainly not "fresh". I want to try to start at least some of these seeds, knowing that I cannot grow them to maturity. I do, however, have a 35 year old Washingtonia that is essentially a bonsai growing here in Michigan, it's only 4 feet tall and summers outdoors/winters indoors. I also grow a few var…

Yellow and pale looking leaves on my Cyrtostachys renda
by Dimimelbourne- 2 followers

After a close inspection, I’ve noticed some of my indoor palms are looking a little pale. My Cyrtostachys renda which was looking really good indoors until recently had started sporting these yellow splotches. I know I had a spider mite outbreak recently so I assumed it was down to that. When I look closer though, I am not so convinced spider mites are the only issue I’m facing here. Could this yellowing coupled with some brown tips be a fungal issue?

Liptstick Palm issues
by Tbowes- 2 replies

My large lipstick palm doesn’t look healthy. It may have been too much direct sunlight but I also noticed some small spots under the leaves. Seems like tiny black lines in the grooves. Any idea what this is or if it’s bad for the palm?

Good Afternoon Friends, I just had a quick question: The DC area is experiencing temperatures of 50-60 F during the day but it dips down to near below freezing at night 34-43F. Is it okay if I leave my potted robustas and trachys outside at night, they are all about 10 months old? I have been leaving them outside but taking them in at night.

Water Quality Studies for Palms in Pots
by Frond-friend42- 1 reply

I picture Utah having very hard water. High carbonate in the soils you can see in concentric circles around here. Taking off from different tips I realized I needed water with a lower pH and read somewhere that Spring water is good for plants (?) It has "things in it" that plants love", I was told. So I've been buying Spring Water for my tropical palms, and then for my more harsh-environment (Cuba, desert) palms I've been using tap water. I also have been going to an "artesian well" where the water is free and filters through large sheets of rock. Seemed like a good natural source equivalent to spring water. The desert, tap water plants I also tend let dry out more t…

Potting Mix
by SailyJ- 8 replies

Has anyone had success growing palms in a chunky aroid mix or super chunky epiphyte soil such as used for hoya? I am wondering if sandy loam is absolutely necessary. I am looking to get a Kentia Palm. I have not had luck repotting palms in regular houseplant soil even with sufficient perlite so I think the extra oxygen chunky barky mix could possibly work. We don't have many supplies for palm trees such as sand in my local plant shop and I don't want to buy something like MiracleGro.

Hello all, I got my brand new lipstick palm around a month ago. Lots of new shoots coming up but two leaves have turned yellow/brown. Just a bit concerned. It’s outside during the day , and inside at night. ( Newcastle NSW ). Is there any special care advice that I should do at night ( Grow lamp?) It will be indoor all the time over winter and may have to get a grow lamp as a perfect spot might be hard to find in the house for light. appreciate any advice. Many thanks

Moved some palms around due to the sun continuing to lower in the sky until winter solstice! South facing balcony getting blasted with sun this time of year when suns path gets lower in sky! Regarding the 2nd picture of 2 coconut palms - the one on right side is getting sent to a friend with a house since it’s the only coconut palm not doing well. Will be replacing it with a phoenix roebelenii in next coming days!

Repotting Outdoor Dypsis Lutescens
by ewaforevah- 2 replies
I'm a newb, looking to this wonderful forum for advice. I picked up a bunch of 3gal and 7gal dypsis lutescens for outdoor privacy. Since it's in a concrete area, they will remain in a pot of some sort. Right now they're 4-5ft and I'll need them to reach the 6-8ft range. Do I need to repot them? I'm perfectly content leaving them in the black nursery pots if repotting isn't necessary. What are the potential issues if I do keep them in the original pots? If I do repot them, any tips, advice or good resources on how to do it? How tricky is it to do and not kill the palm? Thanks!
