Hydriastele beguinii as a houseplant?

Hello, I’ve been growing these seedlings for 6 months now. Am not sure if they make good houseplants and am curious if anyone has any experience with them. In September, I had them very close to plant lights and I think it burned/bronzed the foliage; I moved them shortly afterwards. Do they prefer lower light? Are they best treated as shade loving understory-type palms as juveniles? I read that high nitrogen fertilizer should be avoided with them. Perhaps that caused the burning? I fertilize weakly, every other watering as I do with the nearby indoor palms: J. Magnificas, verschaffeltia splendida. They are in well draining soil and am careful not to overwater…

Triple adonidia potting up question
by kimgerlach1- 1 follower

Hello all, I just ordered two triple trunk adonidias. I saw that they are 3 ft tall and was hopeful that they were being shipped having already been potted up. But I saw in the description that they are being shipped bare root. I have seen many images of triple trunk ones potted up where the trunks kind of bow out. I love that look. I asked the seller how to pot them up in order to get that effect. He told me that it doesn't matter. He was quite rude about me asking the question BTW, but whatever... I decided to Google the question and saw that a member on this forum named (I think) "Not a TA" posted about out how to plant seeds together t…

Cheap Drip Tray Idea
by JohnAndSancho- 4 replies

Just bouncing an idea. Since most of my stuff is on a table in a corner, it's inevitable that I make messes when I'm watering. I was thinking of just buying a few aluminum baking pans to place all of the pots in. Right now I'm watering on a rotation since I have a lot more pots than saucers, and a couple bigger plants have to go to the sink or bathtub to drain. I'd add some Mosquito Bits and some kind of rock, but it seems like the biggest drawback would be aesthetics. I thought about the possibility of reflecting light but I honestly think that'd be negligible with just LED lights.

I live in southern New Jersey and would like to know what are the best Palm options for large containers in South Jersey. I would like to place 3-4 in XL containers around my pool for the summer. Our summer months of July and August can get very hot and humid with temps in the mid 90's. My pool deck is full sun. I have some growing knowledge but nothing in regards to Palms so any growing advice in regards to daily moisture and feeding would be very helpful. Thank you.

Tank's-Pro Cactus & Succulent Mix 16 qt Bag [amazon] Anybody tried this stuff? I ran some numbers and it's basically the same cost if I mixed the same stuff myself. Sorry the link is being stupid --- Tank’s Pro Cactus and Succulent Mix is ideal for cacti, succulents, adeniums, or any species that enjoys fast draining soil . This mix focuses on high porosity and super aeration to eliminate root rot, and mitigate the effects of over-watering. Seeking advice regarding potted Bismarckia, Butia, Jubaea and Nikau palms.

I have recently acquired or germinated four reputedly slower growing palms, which I will initially keep in pots. I intend to plant the Jubaea Chilensis and Butia Capitata in my yard in Portland once they are old and big enough. With the increasing incidences of polar vortexes, I won't be able to plant the Bismarckia Nobilis and Rhapostylis sapida outside, but intend to give them away to someone on the southern Oregon coast when they get too big (if I am still alive at that point.) My first questions are about the growth rate of the Bismarckia, Butia and Jubaea: How fast do they actually grow? How often should I repot them and how long will it be possible to k…

Dumb LED Lighting Question
by JohnAndSancho- 0 replies

So I bought these shelves, it's a 5 tier 6ft wire rack and I figured it'd be a good spot to put a bunch of 4-6" pots. Also bought what's basically lamp cords with switches for some LED grow bulbs, GE BR30s I bought during COVID. Anyway, my question. What distance would constitute "full sun?" Like the bulb 6" overhead? 12"? I don't wanna cook anything.

Mississippi Squad 1 2 3

I guess it's time for an update. I lost my job in January, lost my car, lost my apartment. Depression hit me really hard. Really hard. Not going into details, but if a friend of mine didn't happen to catch a layover in Texas, I wouldn't be here. He rented me a U-Haul to help me get back to my family's house in Mississippi. I wasn't in the greatest mindset, and I left most of my palms and plants in the apartment. I brought my spindle, C. Plumosa, my L. Weddellaniums, a couple snake plants, a Mangave, and my BxLyto. Everything else was left in the apartment and donated to the staff. They must be happy, because they didn't charge me for breaking the lease or not …

Sabal Causiarum shriving for water?
by ZPalms- 1 follower

I went out and saw that my Sabal Causiarum was closing up. Is this a water issue, or is it ready to be repotted or planted in the ground? I'm worried because every time I've had a palm start to close up like this, it meant death. Will they reopen? I've dunked them into a bowl of water to hydrate because it has been a while since I last watered them, but they've never done this before. I suppose with the weather warming up, they may be needing more water?

Hello, I am growing a Sabal palmetto in a pot indoors year round and would like some tips on how to take care of it. It’s my first time growing a Sabal palm indoors! Does anyone have any experience on maintaining a Sabal palm indoors? I’d like to hear some input and share some photos of your Sabal palmetto growing in an indoor environment. What does the temperature range have to be and humidity? I know Sabal palms like a lot of heat and humidity. I am in Central Jersey about a zone 6b. The palmetto palm stays by an east facing window and receives bright direct light during the morning and indirect light during the afternoon. The indoor temp is usually in the low to m…

Potted Foxtail near Van BC

Yeah so i was cruising around metro van (Delta) earlier today looking at different nurseries to see if there were any palm varieties, and to my surprise I saw a Foxtail Palm sitting near the entrance of a Canadian Tire. Not the first place I would have expected it at. Was thinking of getting it in the near future but I still have to look into the care and space of having it in my yard. Is $200 a good deal for this palm, any takes? 20240310_124009[1].heic 20240310_124015[1].heic 20240310_124026[1].heic

I need to repot my Trachycarpus palms. I have access to the following materials: vermiculite, perlite, Pumice, lava rocks, sand, rock dust, sandy loam soil, compost, peat moss, Coco coir. I was thinking to just mix something like this: 2 parts peat and 1/2-1 part perlite then add some osmocote and other goodies for nutrients. What do you guys think?

Went on a plant buying binge today. Found this ~2 or 3 gal for $70. I'd like to pull a few out and use as glorified annuals in ground. What do you think the odds of survival are? I don't know how root sensitive they are. Can't find anything from a quick Google search. I figure I'll soak the rootball and just try to coax a few out.

A few more palms to be planted when ready

As with any collection of plants they need to be grown to a plantable size before planting into an established garden the problem for new plants is the competition from the advanced plants competing for light and moisture also the danger for the new plants is falling branches and dropping palm leaves flattening them on the spot they also need to marked with some sort of bright tape for future watering and maintenance making it easier to see them in the established jungle garden hopefully one day the new garden plants will look as beautiful as the established one

Hedyscepe Canterburyana as a Houseplant!

Back in September, I was looking for a palm that would work best as a houseplant, and on September 25, 2023, @Darold Petty messaged me asking if I would like to experiment with a Hedyscepe as a houseplant. And of course, I said yes because that would make such a unique and fun experiment, and I'm really grateful to have a chance to try one of these. Not too long after, it arrived, and I was able to pop it into a clear plastic cup so I could see the roots develop, which Darold already had sprouted when he sent it to me with a tiny sprout on it. I didn't change anything for this palm, and I didn't give it any special lighting other than what it gets from the window. Th…

Growing Syagrus werdermannii in pots.

This palms seems to grow in a very sandy soil when I look at habitat pictures of this dwarf Syagrus. Is it a dificult plant needing special soil requirements? I have bought a small seedling and right now it is growing in a good draining organic rich soil. My climate is too cold to grow this palm outside so it will have to spend it's life in a pot. For the first few years I will give it some extra love in winter with a grow light during the darkest months untill it is a little more grown up. Any information about growing this species in pots is welcome. Soil requirements, water, light and temperatures requirements, etc.....
