Rheo stem rott - not wet or cold :(
by Laisla87- 1 reply

My rheo (moses in a boat ground cover) has always grown very well outside 12 months a year. Lately I have been noticing that some patches of it were collapsing. When I looked closer, I noticed stem rot. The roots aren't rooting, the tops aren't either, but there are black dead patches all over its stems. When I clear it away it grows back from the roots, albeit weaker. This is strange because the weather is not cold (yet) nor has it been particularly wet, and they are planted in 80% sand. They have grown for me for years with no such problem and I often propagated them in winter and nothing rotted. I have other patches of it growing in more shady, moist spots which aren't…

by The Silent Seed- 0 replies

This may be a long shot - but I am not having much luck finding the right people to ask - but maybe one of you can point me in the right direction. I am looking to see if there exists a variegated, or gold-leaf, thornless Rubus type berry?

Hi, I have this Encephalartos cycad planted near a ferox and I have forgotten what it is. It is the smaller plant in front of the ferox. Could anyone advise what they think it might be please ?, much appreciated. This is not a trick question, I have indeed forgotten what it is. Hope this is enough photo detail.

Australian Syzygium: Frost hardiness
by Philipp- 4 replies
I am growing several Australian species of Syzygium and I was reading different reports on their frost hardiness: Syzygium wilsonii, Syzygium luehmannii, Syzygium forte, Syzygium suborbiculare, Syzygium tierneyanum, and Syzygium floribundum They would grow in a climate with only occasional frost during the night, and with only about -1 °C. Under and between evergreen trees it should be even more sheltered. Thank you very much for any help Philipp

What plants can I grow in Reggio Calabria?
by RC-Italy- 2 replies
Good Morning, I'm new to the forum, but I've been following you for a long time. I come from Reggio Calabria, in southern Italy, and we recently bought a small plot of land near my house. I live in the parts near the port, and for a few years (5 to be exact) I have had a weather station that measures temperatures. It was around the same time that I became interested in tropical and subtropical plants and have been trying to grow some of them on the balcony ever since. I tried with mango (Kent, Keitt, Osteen, Irwin, Tommy Atkins), papaya (from seeds), pineapple (i think "baby"), banana (Orinoco), Lime, Macadamia and Passion Fruit. So far, however, mango, pineapple and papa…

This is a very formal looking tree not unlike Alnus, 30'/ 9.14m, smooth, tan trunk and not messy. No aroma from crushed leaves and no latex when twigs or leaves broken. Fruit is hard with no discernible seeds. Growing in Holiday Park, Carlsbad, 1 mile from the ocean.

One of my favorite shots of this particular garden, where I had recently "primped" this bed to feature all the various Aechmea recurvata types in bloom at this time. I wanted this bed to "pop" as it was going to be on a garden tour the following week. http://www.flickr.com/photos/20217462@N02/5552449990/

Around 1 year ago, we moved to current house which has many palm and fruit trees including a very tall avocdado tree in our backyard. However we hadn't seen the avocado tree had fruits on it while other avocado tree had fruits. We tried to water regularly, and it got few flowers couple months ago. However it dropped all flowers suddenly, so it didn't bear any fruits. We might missed to water one or two times , and it might be the reason of dropping flowers, and no fruits. Anyhow, after that, we didn't take care the avocado tree, and now it has dropped many leaves. I want to try to make the tree to have fruits again. Can you give me some idea why…
