Bromeliads experts I need your help !
by dimitris- 4 replies

Hello everyone , I have a question for the bromeliads experts about the quality of water , which is better for the plants ? Here in Greece our winter is rainy and cold and bromeliads don't need too much water , when they need to get watered I take them outside and their cups fill out from rain water ! The question is what about the other seasons ? Our tap water is full of salts that are getting more and more in the cups and cause some damage on the plants except from the esthetic reasons ! So here is the question which kind of water should I use to fill the cups ? Bottled water , mineral water , the water we use in cars or the water that comes out from air condit…

This morning I was up very early for a Saturday as I had entered the Borzoi in a dog show. Stepping out my front door I was delighted to find that the Brugmansia had finally put on a great display of blooms thanks to the arrival of the autumn rain and that I'm finally on top of the snail population who normally decimate any flush of new growth. From the photos it looked like the weather was going to be great for being outdoors. Dark clouds rolled in from the west and rained heavily. The rain made the dog show horrible to attend but we had to syay for the whole day since one of our dogs won best of breed. Dispite the rain and cool temperature the Brugmansia welco…

Pink Justicia cuttings wilting
by Laisla87- 3 replies

Hi I've got some justicia cuttings placed in water before I plant them out. Strangely, while some of the stems are producing tiny roots, the cuttings look all wilted and sad. Is this normal? It's as if they are not drinking the water!

...Yes, you read that right ..Only in this case, i'm not referring to any Ex girlfriends.. Though there could be comparisons, haha.. Of all the " Arid " Type plants that have been on my radar, for many years, there has been one that i have been on a quest to track down and observe ..and cultivate..that has, up until recently been somewhat elusive. It also belongs to a side- family of plants that closely resembles another group of plants from Madagascar, the Uncarina ..often more commonly known as Mouse Trap Trees. Some still lump this group of plants into the same family Uncarina belongs to, the Pedaliaceae. Other taxonomists separate the Genus Proboscidea int…

Dracaena recommendation?
by Manalto- 22 replies
I'm all excited about my brilliant new idea. I've been looking for a foundation planting to go along the west side of the house, tall enough to create some shade from the hot afternoon sun. The tricky thing is that the space is narrow, only about 6' deep. (Please forgive the fact that I've posted about this before but I still haven't come up with a solution.) I think a row of dracaena (or other plant with similar form) could be quite striking in this spot. They'd have to reach to about 15 ft. I could simply lop off any branches that intrude on the walkway or get too close to the house. Something with reddish tones in the foliage would be ideal - or am I asking too much? Y…

Pandanus lauterbachii

Hello, has anyone grown this species before? I have tried once before in 1996 however didnt realise it requires swampy soil. I have one with two basal shoots within a 6" pot that has been grown in a hothouse in a tray of water. Any suggestions of its cold tolerance would be great. All other Pandanus are do-able here except P.dubius. Regards Kris

Much like Boyce Thompson and the Desert Museum, Tohono Chul offers the visitor a chance to explore more than just your typical desert flora. Here one can start their walk among the palms and other arid adapted tropicals in the Nacapule Canyon display , and end up under a nice example of a streamside / Riparian habitat containing both native and regionally native plants on a different side of the garden. In between are various other areas containing a diversity of plants, a few being somewhat of a surprise. Interesting native ..and a surprise, not so native Conifer(s): Arizona Cypress Cupressus arizonica ( standard, non- exfoliating < bark > form ) …

Bamboo leaf spear pull
by Vincent- 2 replies
Can't find an answer to this one so far. Maybe it is not even a problem but here goes: Noticed that on my bamboo if I tug on the spears of new emerging leaves (both large culms and upcoming new ones), the spear will come right out. I know on palms this isn't good. Are they getting too much water? Or, is this normal to be able to easily pull a spear. Any info helps.

Mango tree over pool area
by GMann- 2 replies
I installed a pool in the house I recently bought. There is a 60 foot mango tree right above it. The tree just bloomed with flowers and they rain down on the travertine deck and the pool, staining both if they are not immediately removed. I think i am going to have to get it cut down. Most of the flowers have now fallen. Question is, can I wait until the mangos ripen before having it cut down? So i can enjoy the final harvest. Or will that just be even more messy? I am worried that little unripened mangos will start to fall off the tree and make a mess before any of them get ripe enough to be edible anyway.

Canarian musa
by Ciczi in Sweden- 5 replies
Hello all Last year I went to Tenerife and there I bought a Canarian musa. Small at first but now it seems to start to grow. What will I do with it? How should I take care of it? I have placed it in a pot on a windowsill facing east with direct sun from 8 - 13 (summer) and 11-13 during winter. It has sprouted a runner already. What to do with that one? Put in a separate pot? Notice, I have it indoor because I live in Sweden. Winters are hard here and even my palmtrees have a tough time outside during the summer. //Ciczi edit. Most likely its a Musa acuminata "Cavendishii"

Transporting Palms

Purchasing palms for our Kona garden often takes place a hundred miles away on the Hilo side of the island. Driving back with palm fronds whipping at 60 miles per hour would be a likely way to shred the palms and in particular would create an unintended pinnate look to entire leaf species. When we first started collecting palms we would rent a furniture van to bring the palms back without damaging them but that was an expensive way to do it. After trying a variety of methods and materials (including Christmas tree wrap which had too much flex) we believe we have found the perfect solution. We now wrap our palms in mosquito netting. The netting is inexpensive to buy, all…
