I planted this tree 13 years ago as a 1m seedling. I think this is impressive growth in a temperate climate. It's hard to get a good picture of it. Ficus columnaris, from Lord Howe Island.

It was South Florida's largest tree. It made Terminalia arjuna look like rootbound shrub in comparison. http://www.miaminewtimes.com/news/irma-takes-down-south-floridas-tallest-tree-9674036 Glad I got to see it once up close a few years back... RIP.

Howdyall: Went to the big Schmoozathon at the Big H, can't pass up the chance to run off at the mouth and get out of my cage for a while . . . . The Big H went into the upper teens, F. I knew that as soon as I saw these frozen oleanders (Nerium) in the parking lot. At least down to 19 F, maybe even lower.

1st Trip to Ecuagenera Florida
by Barry- 1 reply
Stopped at Ecuagenera today on the way back from a long weekend. Now that I bought a good selection of Philodendrons and Anthuriums, I need to know how to take care of them? I have a few bought locally and are doing good. But I bought today on the look and color of plants. Hopefully the ones I got are not extremely difficult to grow. Any help on care and potting media would be greatly appreciated. Pretty awesome selection of plants available. by Eric in Orlando- 1 reply
- 425 views
Anyone know what these 2 bromeliads are. I think they are a Billbergia and Aechmea species and they are currently flowering. The pink flowering specimen is about 12-14 inches tall and a more narrow, tubular habit. The red flowering specimen is about 7-9 inches tall with an olive green leaf that is dark reddish maroon on the undersides. Thanks!

2 different kinds of Iresine Herbstii?! (PHOTOS)
by Sandy Loam- 10 replies
- 1.6k views
I am confused. Both of these plants were sold to me as "Iresine Herbstii", a plant which I discovered from another PalmTalker. Notice that the two plants have totally different leaves. The first one (click to enlarge photo) has larger, pointed leaves with a medium pink colour. The second one has much smaller leaves which are round without pointed tips, and have a purple colour that is much darker than the plant in the first picture. Can anyone explain why these two plants have the same name if they are so different? Perhaps one of them is not Iresine Herbstii? Thanks to any contributors for their answers.

2 old and fat Podocarpus macrophyllus
by Eric in Orlando- 11 replies

Recently spotted these 2 old Podocarpus macrophyllus. Wish these were grown more as trees here. Almost all that is grown in the nursery trade is the cultivar 'Maki' which is shrubbier and shorter foliage. This first one is growing under/near power lines so has been topped for decades

Here are 2 species Cussonia that I have found to survive and grow in central Florida, Cussonia sphaerocephala and C. zuluensis. In the past I have tried Cussonia paniculata and C. spicata. Neither liked our humid, rainy summers. Even when planted in raised beds with rocky, well drained soil. Seed for both came from rarepalmseeds. I have 3 of each planted in diferent locations here at Leu Gardens, in sun and shade and they grow well in either. Cussonia sphaerocepala, Forest Cabbage Tree, is native to Natal, South Africa. It is one of the largest species of Cussonia reaching 40-60ft tall in habitat.

This winter was pretty challenging here in Houston. After 3 years with no temps below 30, we had six fronts push temps into the 20's, three separate ice storms, two heavy frosts, and an ultimate low of 23 during the polar vortex. The first week of March even saw a surprise low of 27. Several fronts gave us persistent cold with temps below 40 deg for 24 hrs+. The following are some of my plants that had performances of note in this weather (both good and bad). Everything listed grows without canopy and had no extra protection unless stated otherwise. I live in central Houston and benefit from the heat island. My neighborhood is full of old mature live oak, magnolia and…
