I Hope Dave will forgive me for starting a new thread about Erythrina stem borer control discussed in the "Hey Matty, what's this Erythrina?" thread below. I am in Pearland (Houston),Tx and have 5 species of Erythrina, 15 plants in all in the ground for 4 years, some over 10 feet tall, eaten up by stem borer each year . This seems to NOT be a problem on the West coast, but as metalfan, fastfeat,AJQ (Ireland),and jimbiz indicated , Stem borer is a big,big problem in Zone 8 and up South (Coastal States). I applied Immidicloprid/Merit (Bayer Tree and Shrub Insect Control) per instructions 30 days ago and have seen No Improvement as of yet. jimbiz, if your still out t…

Went out into the back yard and . . . Saw this hillside of Bogies, ablaze. The first picture was from my neighbor's yard. That's Spanky the Royal towering on the left. Our local Lowes' sometimes marks them down to $1 and they look sad and ugly and I put them in the ground, and not sad and ugly any more. Show us yours!

I wonder if anybody can recommend any Ficus for very wet areas. I have seen large fig trees in tropical areas planted right along the edges of lakes and streams, but I don't know what species they might have been(?).

?? Finding Wholesale Seed Sources
by hydrophyte- 0 replies
Hi folks. I haven't been back here in a while. I have a question and I hope it is not too commercial for asking here. I run a small online specialty store and I hope to offer a small selection of seeds along with some of the other items. I have tried a few different ways of searching online, but I have been unable to find very good sources for most of the plants as seed. Am I missing out on good ways to find sources? Most of them are pretty common decorative gardening plants. There are also a couple of kinds of trees. Thanks for considering this. I would appreciate any tips that you might have.

......and many of you thought ghost peppers were hot?

Well, for any of you that thought Bhut Jolokia or Naga Jolokias were hot, these guys in Australia have just come up with something that is 40% hotter! Some people In England recently came up with the "Naga Viper" at 1,300,000 SHUs, but these guys tipped the scale at well over 1,400,000 SHUs. The new and improved, Butch T Trinidad Scorpion pepper. Nasty looking little things too. I have a couple of plants coming now, we will see for sure. Here is a link: http://thepepperseed.com/peppers/the-worlds-hottest-chilli-pepper-trinidad-scorpion-butch-t/

...and Tassie Troy's tree comes down!
by MattyB- 9 replies

I think this is only 4 years from seed, and this bad boy went outta control! When did you give me those seeds Troy? Anyway, Acacia dealbata was a great canopy tree for a while but then I started noticing that it was incredibly root aggressive. I encountered several large Acacia roots very far away from the trunk and even worse they started forming mats that were choking out the other plants. I had a tile on the dirt that I had a pot set on and when I removed the tile the Acacia roots underneath were just amazing. Scary amazing. So, I decided that this tree needs to be planted out in the open, in the drier areas, and not in my jungly area next to water loving plants.…

...Off with their heads!

...Because sometimes, you just have to lol... Aside from seeds, another way of increasing a collection of/ propagating Cacti is by cuttings. While taking cuttings on most cacti is pretty straight forward ( most, if not all Opuntia for example ), sometimes you may be forced to cut up a favorite cacti specimen to correct ..or save the plant from damage. Both were reasons in the case of some of my Echinopsis/ Trichos. that decided to try and pull themselves out of their pots this summer. Could be a case of too spoiling them w/ a little too much water. Could also be damage to the roots from this summer's extreme heat, which occurred before i moved them out of the shade …

Took a reasonably nice late February day before a storm sweeps through to return out to the Boulder Fields east of Florence to see how everything was looking out there after both last summer's epic Monsoon season, and in light of a pretty lack luster winter rainy season.. While most stuff that probably came up last summer has long since dried out and blown away ..or been consumed by the Cattle that roam much of the Public and State lands out here, can see how much the area benefited from those summer rains - if you have a very good eye. had to get more grit from a nearby wash as well, and scope out road cuts / debris piles neat road cuts for some larger rock for t…

'Blue Daze' or Evolvulus glomeratus
by Al in Kona- 3 replies

Evolvulus glomeratus, better known here as 'Blue Daze' or 'Hawaiian Blue Eyes' makes a very nice low ground cover with attractive true blue flowers. Once established it can be quite drought tolerant. After a few years it can become a bit "overgrown" (still looks OK though). That's when I cut it way back (using my hedge trimmer) removing most of the green growth and leaving only stubby stems inches above the ground. It then grows back more beautiful than ever after that severe haircut. Here are two pics of it growing in the garden . . .

As part of my warm 8b jungle project, I planted a 5ft 'Page' Mandarin. Does anyone know if this plant is viably hardy here? I'm in College Station, TX. BTW, the dog is a menace. He tore off all the fronds on my Washy robusta. He even now is trying to stick his head under the chicken wire (he succeeded) to chew on the trunk.

'Shady Lady' Black Olive

Does anyone here have experience propagating 'Shady Lady' black olive (Bucida buceras 'Shady Lady') from cuttings? This (probable) hybrid doesn't set seed, and is apparently propagated vegetatively, but I can't find any info. I have access to basal suckers that might be easier than root than upper growth. Thanks.

'Tis the season ..For Cactus Blooms 2019. Parts #2 & 3 Late spring highlights / Monsoon season fireworks

...Onward we go as the seasons change.. While nearly perfect weather atm, including some rare sprinkles / showers both Tuesday and yesterday morning, ..with perhaps better chances of rain / storms forecast starting later tonight thru Sunday or Monday, it won't be long before the heat catches up and puts an end to an unexpectedly nice first half of May and sets the tone for what lies ahead as June begins. While some of the heat loving things around the yard are pushing growth / flowers a bit slower right now, Cacti continue their parade of color. Some of the Trichocerus are flowering a tad earlier than last year, with one i had rescued from certain death after …

'Tis the season ..for Cactus Blooms 2019, Pt. 1 ..Spring Openers.

As more mid-spring heat starts creeping in, and what color from earlier on fades out, dries out, and goes to seed, the various cacti planted in the yard and in my collection take center stage. While those which will flower soon enough are busy forming buds, Others are busy showing off, and attraction lots of attention from the bees. Looks like some i have that haven't flowered for me yet, or didn't flower last year may add to this year's show. For now, couple Prickly Pears, a Hedgehog first and a strange oddity among Cacti.. Opuntia X "Pina Colada" While not as *User friendly* as O. basilaris, Beavertail P.P. slightly larger Flowers on this cross start out a…

'Tis the Season, for changes
by Silas_Sancona- 4 replies

As March comes to a close, and some real spring heat starts creeping in, the early season flower show starts fading just as various cacti in my collection / planted out front start their season.. Poppies are peaked out, and full of seed, same with the Globe Mallow, a good thing since i need to make a seed collection off them. ( tons of bees around all spring = a good harvest to come ) At the same time, Mesquite and other stuff that either go semi dormant / dormant over the winter are awakening.. and i guess stuff planted around the medical office across the street got jealous and decided to join the show. As mentioned before, if there's a slight easterly breeze when th…

These Traveler's Trees (Ravenala madagascariensis) are growing at an office by Lake Ivanhoe just north of downtown Orlando. They have been here for about 20 years and have only grown to about 12ft high. The leaves are smaller with shorter petioles. They are a very nice, smaller scaled specimens.

Hi All, A few years back, a forum member in Australia (I think it may have been Wal) posted an incredible photo of "Coral Fire" Ixora. Since then, I have not seen one single source of it anywhere. Does anyone here know anything about it? Needless to say, I'd give my eye-teeth for one of these. Sheesh, I'd even like to see that photo again! Btw, I googled it and looked at a couple of websites (from Australia) that had it. One site said that it was originally discovered in Florida! So - where is it?????

"Hawaiian" plumeria??
by rprimbs- 4 replies

Last year at the Greenscene sale at Fullerton I bought some plumeria cuttings that a woman from Hawaii was selling. Most of the cuttings were $5 cuttings, but she also had more expensive $8+ "Hawaiian" plumeria cuttings. I bought both. I guess that I should have asked her what the difference was. I can see a difference in the leafed out cuttings. The "Hawaiian" plumeria have darker leaves and seem to be smaller and more compact. Is there a special type of plumeria that is referred to as "Hawaiian" plumeria?
