I purchased 100 polyathia bare rooted seedlings they received no special treatment just potted up into 100mm tubes the Indian mast tree a real landscaping plant it can be used as a hedge or on its own or group planting creating a mini rather tall forest in a group planting or avenue planting along a driveway making for a spectacular site one very interesting tree from India I saw many of them planted in India on my recent trip to India growing around the court yards and in front gardens if it can survive in India iam sure it will survive in a nice subtropical environment

A real tough plant the monsteria growing quite large in time but another great plant for the tropical look in the landscape with an edible fruit but certainly an acquired taste with tiny bits of astringent black paper like specks eat them and the fruit is very uncomfortable to eat iam sure there would be some recipes out there for the fruit

I have grown "Hawaiian Papaya" purchased from big box stores in 3 gallon pots in the past but after a couple of crops the new fruit just doesn't seem to ripen well for me during our winters in Southern California. I thought I might try one of the more traditional Mexican Papaya varieties and rather than start with a seedling from a store, start with seeds from fruit that we bought to eat. I'm curious if anyone can shed any light on whether it is best to let them sit for a period of time or just dive right in on germinating them. My first step was to rinse the soak and then rinse the seeds. I then used some hydrogen peroxide solution to soak off any additional fles…

Plant shopping: Australian tree fern and the Christmas cactus

East coast Road-trip time and hitting some plant shops on the way. Serendipitously, I found two plants I didn’t know I was looking for this week but have wanted for a long while. Not so common to find these my area. Grab em when you see em because when you want them, not always so easy to find and shipping charges can make it ridiculous. 1st up is the Australian tree fern, Sphaeropteris cooperi. Pronunciation: spheer-rop-TEER-riss KOOP-per-rye. Likely shared the earth WITH the dinosaurs and the pronunciation actually SOUNDS like a dinosaur 😁 While botanists argue over the name it Also goes by Cyathea australis and C. Cooperi. Anyhow, it will add to t…

Propagating a few cycas species

Its quite common for palm growers to grow cycads they seem to have a lot in common with palms being slow and rare and just as beautiful as palms they are fairly easy to propagate depending on the season either using bottom heating or the hothouse some can go into standard potting mix others in coco coir perlite mix it basically depends on the value of the seeds and how available they are as to what method you use there is about 8 different varieties in the following photos cycas silver sp taitungensis communis deboensis perrofskyana Douglasii reidleii panzihansis with more to germinate and appear above the soil line collecting cycads can be just as addictive as palms they…

Is this E. lehmannii sick?

I’m seeking some advice here. I’m considering buying a E. lehmannii with an 8” caudex for $800, but I’m a bit concerned about its health. There seem to be some brown spots on the leaves. Despite that, the overall appearance of the plant is good. Do you think it’s worth the price? Any thoughts or insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
