I know this isn't a tropical plant, but I will post my question anyway. This small cactus was given to me many years ago. If i recall, it was in a pot with other plants and cacti -- and I separated them into individual pots. This cactus (along with some old assorted plants and palm seedlings, etc.) resided in my semi-dilapidated greenhouse (no doors, no heat) for three years, so I know the cactus was subjected to at least mid 20'sF temperatures). To my surprise, on July 13th I went into my greenhouse to water the plants and I saw that the cactus in question had opened a flower. I carried the cactus up to the house to show my wife and to see if she knew what the ge…

Dioscorea elephantipes
by PalmatierMeg- 5 replies

Last winter I bought two large Dioscorea elephantipes caudices from a little Spanish lady at the fleamarket. I potted them up and waited. I few months ago one, then the second sprouted a sturdy vine. I set them on the shady side of the trellis we built and trained their vines upward. Now they are winning a survival battle with the morning glories. They are supposed to go dormant at some point; I just do not know when. But their large heart-shaped leaves are cool. I really love these plants.

Southern California Ti Plant Meeting The next meeting will be held on Sat. Aug. 1 at 9:00 A.M. The address is 1415 Indiana Ave. South Pasadena 91030 . Phone - 323 257-7878 If you have any extra tropical plants of any kind that you want to find a home for, bring them and we will have a drawing for them. If you bring a plant, you'll get an extra ticket for each one you bring. I also have some plants to add to the table. It might be a good way to get something you don't have. Some people have trouble when they climb the hill near my home. When you get to the top of the hill on Indiana, bear to the right and then stay to the left. At that intersection Indiana d…

Aechmea fasciata
by PalmatierMeg- 1 follower

This last weekend I found this flowering Aechmea fasciata for 1/2 price at a local big box store. It looked okay but had only a few roots and appeared that a harried employee had just jammed it into a 6" pot of soggy peat before sticking it on the clearance shelf with the wilted begonias. When I got home I planted it in a 3 gallon pot of my own potting mix. Does anyone have further suggestions on upkeep for this bromeliad? I know it is common as dirt yet pricey anyway. I see no signs of pups yet but hopefully will get some before the mother plant withers away.

Desmos chinensis-Ylang Ylang Shrub
by Eric in Orlando- 3 replies
- 3.5k views
Demos chinensis, Ylang Ylang Shrub is flowering. The flowers looks very similar to the Ylang Ylang Tree, Canaga odorata and smell similar but are weakly scented. I think they might be more fragrant in the evening. This is a small shrub only growing 3-5ft tall and it has tolerated low 30sF with no damage. Not to be confused with the Dwarf Ylang Ylang Tree, Cananga odorata var. fruticosa

Local Garden Color 1 2
by Jeff in St Pete- 49 replies

I was invited out to the country for lunch today at a local family's home. They have a nice colorful garden - enjoy the photos! First we stopped for directions at a little grocery store and (no suprise) they gave us exact directions. This is a small town and everyone knows everyone At the side of the grocery store - I stepped out of an air-conditioned car and my camera lens immediately fogged over. We had no problems finding the property. This Croton caught my eye when we first arrived. It's in a pot on their porch. I like the large oak like leaves. The leaves were over a foot long.

Michelia X Alba Question
by epicure3- 5 replies

I have a large 20' specimen that is currently flowering. As a matter of fact, I have never seen that many flowers on the tree before. That's the good news. The bad news is that it is shedding an enormous amount of leaves almost on a daily basis. I have to beleive that it is stressed in some way. It gets a lot of water, but no more than it has any other summer it has been there. Any idea as to what is happening? The inner layers of the tree seem to be the most impacted. You can see up into the tree now, where you couldn't before. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thx

Cycads in containers: big or small?
by daxin- 6 replies
- 6.1k views
I have read and heard many advices of growing cycads in larger than normal containers for optimal growth, but then I saw these Dioons in really small containers and yet they seem to be still quite healthy. I'd like to ask our experts here if this is a possible long term arrangement. FYI, the fronds are about 5' long and the containers are about 1' wide.

I've seen some wonderful sea grape trees at the beach and a friends house. I don't really like the hedge look, but I love the look of them when they are pruned into a tree. They give such great shade and are great climbing tree. Anyone else like this look?

Which types of apples will grow and produce in SW Fl? I've heard Dorsett, Anna, and tropic sweet being Florida varieties, but from those all were 9b except dorsett, which was 10a. Should I just buy 2 dorsett trees, or should I give it a try with the others anyway? Thanks.

Philodendron selloum is a main staple, in terms of plants, I grow all about my property. This past January I recorded a low temperature reading of 23.5 F (-4.7 C) in my front yard, 5 feet above the ground and 15 feet out from the east side of my house. However, I'm sure the temperature was lower in other parts of my property, especially the north side that backs up to state scrub land property. My Philodendron selloums growing along the north side of my property were totally defoliated. However, on the south side of my property, where it is lightly wooded, the P. selloums weren't hurt at all. The below photo is of some of my P. selloums growing along the north bo…
