big Schizolobium parahyba

Maybe not huge, but it's one of the bigger trees in this neighborhood. It appears it may have been topped before; notice the interesting umbrellas of 5+ shoots originating from common locations (esp. bottom right). Still, it was cool to see one in a neighborhood that sorely lacks trees...

Ensete ventricosum Maurelii Question
by gavilan1- 8 replies
- 1.2k views
I have a pair of Ensete ventricosum Maurelii in my front lawn. One is about 15 feet tall or so, and very robust. The other is about 11 or 12 feet tall, and generally smaller in size (girth, etc.). A little over a month and a half ago, the smaller banana flowered (facing my neighbor's yard, of course), and now the whole banana plant seems to be in decline. All the leaves are browning/drying out at the edges, and look like they're going south soon. Both grow in full sun, and the larger plant looks very healthy. We have had a very mild summer in So. Cal., so far. Do these bananas go into decline/die after producing an inflorescence? I have never seen one of these flo…

Asian Cycad Scale
by Really full garden- 3 replies

I first saw an infected Cycas revoluta about two years ago.It was about 3 km from my house. My first cycad to be infected was a Cycas circinalis and that was about a year ago and it has been a battle ever since.I have been using imidicloprid and horticultural oil.During the dry season I was spraying all my cycas species ,both infected and not, once every three weeks. This was working fine and there were no new infected plants.I continued to spray every three weeks and began to notice that the scale rebounded dramatically when the rainy season began.I have been spraying every week now for over a month and the scale is spreading again. HELP !!!!!!!

Got this beauty from the local hardware store , they had one with 7' of trunk but despite much pleading refused to sell me the big one ( display fern ) . Apparently they are one of the fastest growing tree ferns and in my opinion one of the most stunning. The black Tree fern is also native to the Chatham Islands . How do they go planted in full sun ?? My latest addition ! A mature specimen

Palm ornaments

For the "telephone pole type" palms it's enjoyable to add orchids or other epiphytes. I'd like to see what you plant on your palms or if you consider it blasphemous? We've covered some plentiful tree species like Bixa (lipstick tree),tree ferns and guava, but wouldn't dream of covering a bit of the trunk of a smaller, rarer palm which would probably be gaudy anyway. I've included some vanda orchids to start but staghorns, ant plants, bromeliads, other orchids etc. all seem to thrive in our experience so far. Also, what do you use to attach them without hurting the tree? We tried twine but the termites ate that. Fishing line cut into the tree quickly and hose didn't secur…

Hey Yall, I dont even know what to type into google for this one. "Large leafed plant" is a little too vague. So, anyone know what this is. It was chopped down at one time and what you see is what came back. The stump was about 10 inches in diameter. Also, this was on a vacant lot in East Ft Myers,Fl. Thanks, PG
