Show off your Broms 1 2

Seeing the bromeliads in the pictures of Kim's garden was great and I thought other bromaniacs out there should share some of their stuff. I know of quite a few of us here that moonlight over at another brom forum and I'll sure almost everyone has some broms lurking in their garden. If not, let this thread inspire you. Bromeliads are extremely versitile and come in every color, shape, and form. They make great companion plants for palms! Neo. unknown (possibly 'Wee Willy') Neo. 'Tiger' Neo. Since Summer is over and fall is showing up more everyday I figured I would post some color shots from the garden. These are pictures I took over the last two weeks. It seems plants always give one big showing before going into winter. I have just a big issue with Hibiscus collecting as I do palms. Here are some that bloomed and a bunch of other colorful things growing in SoCal. Tylene Some Like it Hot Tangerine Dream High Voltage

I just planted my orinoco banana tree but I’m not sure what height I should plant it at, the location I picked has a bit of a hill on the side and the water would just run off, what would be the best thing to do? Should I plant it a little deeper? I planted it a tiny bit higher but idk what level would work best and the very base of the tree is in the picture below

What is this Cycad? 1 2
by Gbarce- 67 replies
- 5.8k views
As a Christmas gift to myself I bought a cycad ( I couldn't find a palm ok!) The vendor said that it was a Encephalartos Latifrons but he really wasn't sure that that is correct - that is just the name that he remembers. He bought this plant as an offshoot with just 2 leaves around 15 years ago and he remembers that the mother plant had blue green leaves . I looked up E. Latifrons and it is suppose to have glossy green leaves and the leaves look very different. Any Cycad expert out there that can identify it?

Plumerias do really well at my beach garden. They love the sun and fast draining soil. The wind keeps fungus and rust problems to a minimum. This is the native white that has no scent.I have seen this one growing on rocky hillsides at 1600m where winter temps drop to 6-8C every night in Dec-Jan. This is also a native. It seems that the pinks and reds grow at lower altitudes. It is also scentless My favorite , P.obtusa "Singapore"It is evergreen and has a wonderful light lemony-magnolia perfume

Bradford pear replacement 1 2

I have two Bradford pear trees at the end of my yard, but I'm unsure about which species I could replace them with. I'm open to either native or non-native options. I've been thinking whether I'd prefer something with a tropical appearance, or if I should stick to a native species or try something different, like a fir if any can even grow, or maybe just throwing some palm trees. I'm looking for a tree that grows quickly, reaching a medium to large size quickly. I'd like to consider plants that I can pair with the new tree or grow under it. Since the entrances are on both sides, I've been thinking of something that can look really nice, maybe with ferns growin…

Show off your cycads here!! 1 2
by Gbarce- 65 replies

Folks in another post requested me to show my cycads and I am happy to oblige but the problem is I don't really have any exceptional specimens to show off. So I'd like to start this thread for others to post and show off their cycads - Encephalartoses, Dioons, Cycases, Zamias and Macrozamias ---etc.... whatever it is , if its a cycad please post it here. I know you palmaholics in So Cal have lots of cycads too --- so show them off!!! THis is my Encephalartos trispinosus ( but is probably a hybrid of some sort). Got this last year and is my first Encephalartos-- still learning how to grow these. Second picture is a Dioon Spinulosum that I planted in teh grou…

The World of Ferns 1 2

As many have noticed, I have recently developed an interest in tree ferns. This has led me to take notice of ferns in general and I noticed that there isn't a thread (recently at least) devoted to sharing our non-arborescent ferns. Palmtalk members, please share and discuss your ferns and all topics related to ferns and their cultivation, habitat, preservation, scientific and taxonomic matters, etc.

The Bamboo Thread 1 2

Bamboo is that one plant that immediately invokes feelings of the tropics, while being evergreen, fast, and an easy to grow plant. Given that there are over 1000 species of bamboo, and their native ranges can go to very cold hardy zones, I wanted to see in what all ways everyone on here is using bamboo in their landscapes or even in what ways you have seen bamboo used elsewhere. I have seen tastefully done landscaping using bamboo in rectangular boxes, along with creating privacy screens or even just focus points for a yard. Please post any pictures along with species name and hardiness zone to share with others to get inspiration on new ways to incorporate this gre…

Hi guys, last year in August I asked here for some help to find a volunteer job at a nursery in North Queensland. Micheal (aussiearoid) was so kind to sent me contact details for a nice family owned nursery and this is where I spent the last 3 months. On Wednesday I will leave and travel from now on southwards so I will see Townsville, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide (and of course some places in between). From Adelaide I will also fly to Alice Springs and afterwards to Darwin at the end of my trip. On my way back to Germany I will have a few days stay in Bangkok where I intend to visit the Chatuchak markets and then I'll meet a member of a German fo…

About 10 years ago I bought a small, single section Cerus peruvianus (I understand it's called something else now) from Home Depot and brought it home in the back seat of my car. I planted the cerus next to my storage shed, on the south side. Over the years it grew and multiplied, flowering heavily 3-4 times a year, then developing lots of fruits. About three years ago I started noticing small cerus plants coming up all about my property (5.60 acres), many of the plants 100s of feet away from the mother plant. At first I wasn't sure what species of cerus they were but after awhile concluded they were Cerus peruvianus. No doubt, birds were eating on the fruit and …

Got Tomatoes?? 1 2

A tedious affair for me. There is something alluring about growing your own home grown tomatoes and vegetables. The idea of fresh ripe off the vine tomatoes for sauces, Salsas, sandwiches, and salads is very enticing for one to grow their own, with the added convenience of being in a home garden. Ive been trying with some success for several years now and it seems I learn a little bit more every year from all the partial failures. I find it difficult to master...and I never get them perfect. I still try like mad! My plants this year are doing ok but still on that quest for a bushel of perfect tomatoes.... Im using grow boxes and have for several years now.. its sort …

I know I wouldn't be able to grow them to the size they get where they originally come from, and I'm not sure if they can even be purchased, but I had no idea bananas could get that big that my mouth dropped. I'm just curious has anyone else heard of these or have one or had one? Just sharing though because it's pretty awesome and maybe interest others. 🤯 I searched the forum and only seen one person mention them. 🤠

Gigasiphon macrosiphon from Tanzania is almost extinct. Only flowering tree outside Africa is Fosters Botanical Garden where seed usually is eaten by bugs or rots quickly, thus no new plants. I was fortunate to get one and it is blooming now. Flowers are a whopping 9" across and plant has big beautiful leaves that flush red.
