Monstera Advice
by JohnAndSancho- 3 replies
I've given my Monstera Deliciosa 3 bamboo stakes from mail order palms, and it's almost outgrown those. My first thought was to buy one of the metal trellis things for tomatoes, but they're not exactly aesthetically pleasing and this plant is leggy as hell so I'm not sure it'd be long term viable. Unfortunately it'd take an act of Congress for me to move things around enough to get a good picture of it due to most of my outdoor plants being inside now. Suggestions? Thoughts? Plant is roughly 5 ft tall and super leggy. Every other Monstera I've seen is bushy, mine just wants to go up.

Coffee Growing

Who grows Coffee? Anybody can as I grew it in pots in my living room in VA even before I had a greenhouse there. Now that I live in the mountains of PR of course I can grow it much more easily. The flower buds were likely triggered to bloom by the very unseasonable two days of lots of rain here. This plant is holding ripe red cherries and blossoms for the next crop. I have planted several Coffea arabica plants on some slopes plus a couple of Coffea robustas. I have seedlings to plant later, but I can buy inexpensive locally grown coffee from many places so processing is lower priority. In fact the last …

My new Euphorbia garden
by PalmatierMeg- 3 replies

I acquired my first Euphorbia - a variegated Ammak - back in 2008. It stood about 18" tall and was covered in swirls of pale green, yellow and cream - so beautiful. I was hooked. It is now 6' tall and producing small branches. Even though I had it in the largest pot I had, the howling winter wind whipping across the flats kept blowing it over onto the jade plant and Adenium. In addition I had acquired other columnar Euphorbias that are now 1-3' tall. I considered planting the tall one but didn't want to put it among the palms in the Caribbean garden for fear someone might get snagged by those wicked thorns. My dear husband suggested we create a small garden just for Eupho…

Picked this up at a Supermarket. I'd forgotten the names of various Broms but a search reminded me of the name Vriesea. I wonder what colour the actual flowers will be when they open, and if theyre fragrant like the flowers on my previous brom, a Tillandsia, were. Did you all realise they are related to grass!

I was given these two little plants on Thursday by a friend. These initially came from Lyons nursery. I was told it gets a large glossy leaf but doesn't get taller than a foot or so. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Orchids
by aussiearoids- 3 replies

So many different ones ! They are one of the largest plant families , and I have been lucky enough to know and work with several very experienced growers . One orchid show I went to many years ago had an enormous specimen plant on display , it had been entered into the competition , and won a ribbon for best species as well as best of the show . It looked very much like a palm ! Searched for years to get one for myself but still have not found one .. Cyrtopodium palmifrons from Brazil , it is related to the giant Grammatophyllums from Asia . http://www.orchidspecies.com/cyrtopalmifrons.htm This only shows the flower , sadly I have lost the only photo I had of the p…

Stellar variegation on an orchid
by metalfan- 3 replies
I have been growing this orchid for about 7 years. I started with 2-3 canes from a friend, and now I have 3 huge hanging baskets of it. It is a great plant, and my specimens are really great because they are all genetically highly variegated. Never any all green leaves. Every once in a while, I get a really, REALLY great cane, like this one with almost all 1/2 and 1/2 leaves all the way up the cane.

Propagating cycads from offsets
by rprimbs- 3 replies

I have a Dioon edule with a huge number of offsets. And I have a couple of friends who'd like a rooted offset. So what advice could you give me about removing and rooting an offset? How big should the offset be before I remove it? Three inches (7.5 cm)? Or bigger? Is a pruning saw okay to use? I should disinfect it first, right? But what should I disinfect it with? Should I treat the cut surface on the mother plant and on the offset with chlorothalonil? And use rooting compound on the offset? Should I plant it in something like pumice?

My avocado tree is sick

Hi. I have 3 annual avocado cuttings. They are all healthy, only one of them has brown spots. When I gave her to the window sill, her leaves had withered in a few hours. I have watered, but I do not know if it can be saved. What could have happened to her? He is in room 20 Celsius, I water on average every few days. I watered a biohumus throughout the winter, now I slowly introduced the fertilizer. Two weeks ago he looked like this:

Is this a Dioon?
by Fouquieria- 3 replies

Jeff White gave me this cycad almost three years ago but he didn't know what it was. I planted it out on the hillside almost immediately but it hadn't done anything until now. It's flushed with two nice leaves. Is this a Dioon? If it is, which one? I went looking and the only one that looked sort of like it was D. rzedowski. -Ron-

BBC article on how plants can suffer from being potted

http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/18612661 I thought id share since alot of us grow our plants in containers. Its already common sense that a pot restricts growth to a plant, but the use of a MRI to view the roots zone and how it reacts to the limited space is interesting.

This is a group that has always interested me and that I have wanted to try.Two things have stopped me.One ,none are available locally and two,my climate is too hot and dry. Soon I will have a garden at 800 - 900 m that has rain almost year round and warm days and cool nights so that my interest has been rekindled. I know there are many many cultivars. They are supposed to be easy under the right conditions.Tell me about your experiences with these beautiful flowering plants.

I had some initial involvement with the installation of this project back in February 2011 when it was first installed. I finally stopped by to look at how it was doing after almost 2 years of growing. The project was Patrick's first northern California project, and he specified about 90 different taxa of California native plants from throughout the state. Here's a link to a photo set and commentary on my Flickr site. http://www.flickr.com/photos/20217462@N02/sets/72157632421924946/

Hidden flower on Maxillaria elatior
by Tracy- 1 follower

I noticed something discolored part way down one of the stems of my Maxillaria elatior today. I thought it was a dead leaf that had dropped down until I looked more carefully. The flower emerges from between leaves with no stem. I then noticed many more blossoms yet to open. What a wonderful find! Obviously this is the first time blooming on this plant for me or I would have known what to expect.

Croton ID needed
by Eric in Orlando- 3 replies

Anyone know what croton this is? Probably nothing very rare, it was bought at a local garden center but it is different than the common commercial varities I usually see for sale. They also had 'Excellente' and 'Golden Globe', 2 other nice colorful ones. This one just had a tag that said "Croton". It has the oakleaf type foliage.
