When to move a Ceratozamia
by tank- 3 replies
I am planning on moving a Ceratozamia "santiago tuxtla" to a more protected spot. Right now it is in a very exposed area and gets burnt every year. The plant has a 6-8" caudex. Should I move it before it puts out its next flush (probably in about a month or two, or after it finishes flushing and the leaves have hardened off? Thanks

Opuntia species ?????
by PalmatierMeg- 1 reply

I played a gig down in North Naples on Saturday. On a break I took a walk around the grounds. In the weeds at the edge of the property was a sprawling cactus - an Opuntia, I think. It was growing flower buds so I detached several of the flat "paddles" to take home. They looked smooth and spineless but were covered in almost-invisible hairs that dug into my skin and were a chore to wash away. Now I handle them with leather gloves. I'm posting a photo of two of these "paddles" that have flower buds on them. Looks like the flowers will be bright pink, maybe with yellow. Can anyone ID this cactus for me? Mystery Opuntia

Big Euphorbia Down
by Wai`anae Steve- 7 replies
Just two pictures for now. On the night of January 16th one big gust of wind took the top off this huge Euphorbia sp. in my front yard. It was so big that the front door stairs were blocked and we had to go in and out thru a side door and walk around the house. Eight truck loads later at one load per day it looked like the second picture.

Which bamboo species for a tight spot?
by Kostas- 15 replies
- 1.1k views
Hello I would like to ask you if there is any preferably tall growing bamboo species that spreads its culms to a no bigger than 2-3m diameter area. I have a spot in a patio at a corner of my property which is 70cm wide and 2-3m long. The patio runs for many meters but i only have 2-3 meter of its length available to a bamboo. That spot is at the corner of my property and its enclosed between 3 cement slabs but the fourth side is open. After 2-3 meters from that corner,i have a Caryota maxima(Himalaya) seedlings planted which hopefully should grow large and reach almost the entire width of the patio(i will enlarge the patio if the trunk comes too close to the cement wa…

Black Bamboo is it a runner?
by Steve Mac- 24 replies
I have just been given a pot of bamboo (4 mtrs high) but he didn't know what type it is. But he thinks that it is a clumper. How can I tell if it is P. nigra or B. lako or G. atro or D. asper var. Hitans or D. brandisii var. black? It is compleatly pot bound -- there is no soil in it. I don't know how it lived, and in full sun too. It has been in the pot for about 10 years with no maintaince with only a couple of roots out the bottom into the ground. Here are some clues to help you.

Sugar Cane Cuttings?
by _Keith- 8 replies
- 1.9k views
I just scored some new sugar cane, really thick dark purple stalks, but its too late to plant outdoors. I assume I can't let it sit around for another 2 months and have it still be viable. So, until temps warm up enough to plant it out in the ground, what is the best technique for starting this in pots. Light, soil, fertilizer, any details appreciated.

Rice Terraces
by Manolitus- 9 replies

All, I am sorta of surprised that rice terraces have not been mentioned much on any of these forums. I did a quick search and the only thing that popped up was in the travel logs. Few things say tropical as much as much as rice terraces. But what does it take for someone to incorporate this look for their private garden ( besides a lot of space ! ) ? What are the zones where this can work ? What are the soil needs ? Obviously lots of water is necessary..... Can anyone enlighten us ??? Manny

Cymbidiums for the SE US
by Kailua_Krish- 8 replies

Hi all, I was curious if anyone had any information about growing Cymbidiums as landscape plants in the SE US. I have been looking around and found a bit of info online, such as a list of cultivars growing and flowering in Jacksonville, but have yet to find information about how cold the warm tolerant varieties can take. I have a what I bought as a Cymbidium siniensis outdoors since last fall and so far it still looks good. If anyone has any info it would be appreciated! -Krishna P.S. Information about other warm tolerent ground orchids that can survive hard freezes would be useful also. I am trialing some Phaius and soon some Calanthe (the Japanese species/hybri…

Costus asplundii
by aussiearoids- 0 replies
Taken a long time for this one to flower , think I had 1 or 2 last year with 4 years growth [ this was one of the first things planted ] Its not really one grown for the flowers , the purple hairy stems are the main feature that attracted me to this plant. It can grow to approx 3m tall and probably would prefer the shade of a few palms , as it really stresses in hot dry times . I have had nearly all the foliage burnt a few times .The extra wet dry season this year has kept the leaves looking great . Flowers are large , and the inflorescence is pendant .
