Kiwi Vine
by tank- 0 replies

Picked up three Kiwi vines in 3gal pots, one male, two females. looking for some info from anyone who has experience with this fruit. 1. I have a deer problem. I'm assuming that I'll have to cage off the lower part of the vine to keep the deer from eating the vine to the ground. Anyone have experience with Kiwis and deer? 2. The area where I'm planning on installing it gets about a half day (morning) of full sun and then the rest is a mix, do they prefer full sun or will this amount of sun work? 3. My plants are rated to zone 8b, does this mean they will freeze to the roots, or just lose their foliage during winter? Thanks

tropical and temeprate trees together
by Eric in Orlando- 0 replies

Here in central Florida it is the transition area for tropical and temperate trees and often can grow them side by side. Here is an example; on the far left is the Silk Cotton Tree, Bombax ceiba (tropical) and the far right, Ginkgo biloba temperate). In the background is Magnolia grandiflora 'D.D. Blanchard', a warm temperate tree species. another with Ginkgo on the left and Bombax on the right back

Ficus Religiosa
by Kumar- 1 reply

I saw this very graceful looking Ficus religiosa on Sunday. We call it the peepul tree and the fluttering of its heart shaped leaves on a hot sunny afternoon can be very soporific. The bark is pale white and the roots are very spreading and destructive. This is more common than the banyan (F. benghalensis) due to the lack of aerial roots but nevertheless the spreading branches are very heavy and extremely dangerous to be under during a thunderstorm. Most peepuls are decidous and this one is just regenerating its leaves before the rains. The base is covered with money plant or Pothos

The person working there said the last one she saw like it was several years before... anyway, the flower was very different, the leaves kinda average... Sorry for the poor old pics...

A year ago we bought a dutchman's pipe vine for out latest arbor. It struggled, mainly because caterpillars chewed on it relentlessly. My husband got frustrated waiting for blooms that never materialized. Then, Saturday we found a fabulous speckled maroon flower and another fixing to open. Dutchman's pipe and passion flower with my husband's hands for scale. Unopened pipe

I bought this scrawny little Brownea Sp. seedling a couple of months back. I placed it in the shadehouse to let it strengtheen up and get more vigorous before placing it somewher sunnier. A lot of its leaves were sort of beat up and dried out when I bought it in a plant show and a few days ago I noticed that a lot of those leaves fell off already

Harpephyllum caffrum--Kaffir Plum
by fastfeat- 17 replies

OK, I'm not advocating the wholesale planting of this species as a street tree again, but I find it interesting to occasionally indulge the thought processes of arborists and landscape architects who came before. And also, I like to shine a little light on trees that are on the verge of falling out of the trade because they are no longer planted in quantities once demanded by post-War builders. I've always despised the old nurseryman's circular sleight: Customer: "Well, why don't you grow it anymore?" Nurseryman: "Well, nobody plants it anymore" Customer: "Why doesn't anyone plant it?" Nurseryman: "'Cause nobody grows it anymore!" So for you young folk…

nice pair of well-pruned Ficus rubiginosa
by fastfeat- 7 replies
- 1.5k views
Across the street from Crystal Cathedral (Chapman Av, Garden Grove) was this pair of well-maintained F. rubiginosa. These have heavy tomentum, may be cultivar 'El Toro' or 'Irvine'(?) This type is perhaps the best fig for smaller SoCal yards and parkways, as they tend to be slower-growing and usually good branching habit. (Similar trees have been growing throughout Fashion Island parkways since the '70s with relatively little concrete destruction.)
