Here is our mango R2E2 growing in the garden and also 2-pics of ripe fruit from the tree being held by grandchildren. I was told that the variety R2E2 was a seedling tree from a Kent mango growing in Australia. The fruit is quite large, sweet excellent flavor and is fiberless.

mystery spotted plant
by Al in Kona- 6 replies

A friend brought me this unique plant and said the nursery where it came from did not know what it was either. I have no idea how big it might grow tho right now in its tiny container it is about 20cm (8") tall and about 30cm (1ft.) wide. Almost looks like a small rather soft thornless Agave, but that's just a wild guess. Probably not that at all. Anybody know or wanna take a guess at it?

Here is a pic of our Australian Grass Tree flowering in the garden now. It's been a rather slow grower but guess that's normal from what I hear. Have no idea which species this might be. Anybody have any clue just by looking at the pic?

Brownea seeds---when do I harvest and plant?
by metalfan- 4 replies
My Brownea grandiceps bloomed and now I have a seed pod. I want to harvest and plant the seeds but I don't know when to do it. Should I pick the pod now while its green? Or should I wait til it falls off, or turns darker or dries out?

A relative of mine lives in Kingston, Jamaica and she wants a fast growing tree that will provide dappled shade. The proviso is that Kingston has a pronounced dry season, so the tree must be able to withstand long periods of drought. Suggestions welcome!

Begonias
by John Case- 1 follower

My wife has convinced me that begonias, primarily cane and rex, will be the perfect understory for the palms..... While they add a lot of color and interest to the eye. I am not certain that they are necessarily compatible. I haven't seen many begonia photos here...am I just being suspect? They seem to be very easy to grow here, I have propagated a number of ours into pots. I'm looking for some response to determine if this makes sense...... Thanks, John

I was excited to see RPS had these on their latest list. This very large aquatic aroid has been on my wish list for some time. From what I have been able to find ,the seeds will germinate in a few days in warm water and then can be potted up and grow quickly depending on pot size ,water temps and fertiliser.Any advice on germinating this spectacular aroid?

Fern Help.
by OverGrown- 2 replies

Can someone tell me what might be going on with my fern? I recently moved it indoors since the weather is getting cooler. Location is Brooklyn, NY. Root ball stays adequately moist, I've checked for root rot but there is none. The browning/black edges started outdoors on a few leaves once the new angle of sun started to hit it, but never for more than an hour or two. I've since cut those fronds and now the problem still persists with holes starting to develop on the leaves. As it sits now (southwest facing window)...From left to right, Variegated Lace Fern, Dypsis cabadae, & I'm not sure what variety it is but its the last one on the right. Cl…

new cycad addition
by SFloridacollector- 1 reply

I reworked a section of the garden today to include a new cycad. It's the middle plant. I hope somebody can give me confirmation on the identity. I've had it about 6 weeks and have been getting it acclimated to harden off a flush before planting it out. I'd enjoy seeing what others are proud of in their gardens. Hecklers can skip the innuendo and go on outside to snap a photo of a plant. Thanks, Chip

Magnolia 'Pure Joi'- a variegated tropical hybrid Magnolia
by Eric in Orlando- 7 replies
- 1.7k views
This is our Magnolia 'Pure Joi', a variegated hybrid between M. champaca and M. bailloni, both SE Asian species that were formerly placed in Michelia. It hasn't flowered yet but is about 6ft tall now and should in the next year. Often the leaves come out solid green and develop variegation or come out solid cream and develop green coloring. This will be a beauty as a mature tree full of fragrant white flowers.

Lets talk about lawns 1 2
by Bags- 41 replies

I am finding it can be difficult to find the right lawn for various conditions. I have a dog and various shade and sun parts of my yard that are creating different challenges. My front yard has a bermuda hybrid that looks good and never gets any burn from my dogs urine. It is a creaping grass that will cover any bad spots quickly. The problem with this grass is it goes dormant when the weather gets cool and it will only survive in full sun, so this may be a problem as my yard fills in, but for now it is great. In my back yard I have Tall Fescue. It is north facing so is full shade in the winter and full sun in the summer. It also stays very wet in the shade. …
