Mystery Cycad.

Here is a Cycad I got a while back that got neglected. I got several at the time and realized I was ignoring them because I thought I had so many. (dumb, I know) Anyway, I finally potted the last two survivors up and this one just threw a leaf. It was labeled "Macrozamia hybrid" which I knew was wrong. Considering where I got it, it is very possible it is a rare one. Not saying it is, but don't rule it out. pics with flash and without

Mexican Bamboo
by Gbarce- 25 replies
- 4.3k views
THis looks like an ordinary clump of grass but its Mexican Bamboo. I've never seen a large clump of these-- only short bushy examples like this one. I have been told that they can get up to 20 feet tall on pencil thin stalks and the leaves are very whispy when mature. There doesn't seem to be any information on the net about it. Anyone have any information on this bamboo? Pictures of a mature specimen perhaps?

What fern is this?
by Gbarce- 4 replies
I bought this plant a few weeks back thinking that it was a fern but Now I am not sure that it is. Though the leaves are weirdly shaped (which was the selling point) the overall structure of the plant resembles a maiden hair fern. The roots are very fine and dark colored and the new shoots coil out of the ground from a very thin rhizome. BUT...

Neoregelia " Norman Bates "

My friend took me with him, to the Brome nurseries today, he went to buy Guzmanias, so when we got there, I asked the owner to show me anything unusual, that he would consider parting with, and one of the things he showed me, was this cross between Carcharodon " tiger " x " Hannibal Lector ", called " Norman Bates ", I did some fast talking, and came home with it, I really don't think he wanted to part with it, as it's the only one he had, it matures to a size of 2' x 4' like the Carcharodon Tiger, but has even more strips than the Hannibal Lector, Ed

Ficus macrophylla
by Austinpalm- 4 replies

I purchased the plant shown in the spring of 2008 as F. macrophylla. However, some discussions on another website have led me to question if it is indeed, macrophylla. It has grown well since then and handled 28F without any problem. Any thoughts?

Stemmadenia Litoralis Flowering....
by epicure3- 2 replies

So, I cut down my 20+' Michielia x Alba, a bitter sweet job. Kind of like seeing your Ferrari going off the pier into the Pacific with Osama bin laden in the driver's seat. Anyway, I planted a 5' Stemmadenia which I didn't think had a chance to throw a flower 3 months after planting. However, the Southern California weather gods were nice and threw me a bone. The scent is rather nice, if not very strong. Kind of a sweet, baby powder like smell. I picked the flower for the wife and it has lasted for a number of days (unlike others I pick that last for hours such as Brunfelsia Americana, Radermachira, or Passiflora Alata). Here's a pic of the flower and tree. Very nice loo…

Cycad problem again
by fiji jim- 7 replies

Hi All, We had this problem last year. It was much worse then but we cured it by defoliating all the plants and starting a spray program. Then I had help from Terry in NC and Jon on the Sunshine Coast in Australia. We are a bit limited here with the choice of chemicals available. We used two different systemic insecticides a week apart and nearly every week sprayed with Neem oil also. Their advice worked and we have kept up the same spray ritual since. But it starts again. The pics show all. What else can I do to avoid stripping them again? Jim

A recently planted, late Feb., 25 Gallon M. Champaca here in S. Fla. is experiencing a serious bout of leaf drop. Is anyone familiar whether or not they are semi-decidious? Or maybe just shock? I've read that they are evergreen. Has anyone experienced this? Thanks, Rob K.

My Tillandsia beutelspacheri throwing some yellow spears. Billbergia 'Arribella' in rare form. This Aechmea looks like 'Little Harv' but it is spineless. So, I nominate it's name as Ae. 'Smooth Puss'.
