Two Little Seedlings
by Fouquieria- 3 replies
- 548 views
Here's a pic of some little seedlings I started this winter. The larger one is Stereospermum kunthianum and the smaller one is Fernandoa magnifica. Out of the batch of seeds I planted, I got about nine Fernandoa and about 14 Stereospermum. The Stereospermum were much more vigorous and came up faster and are larger. I also have a two year old sapling of Fernandoa madagascariensis which did fine outside in a pot last winter and this winter. I also got a Fernandoa sp. from Peter through the Huntington which has been in the ground for about four years now. It's about six feet tall. They seem to be quite drought-tolerant and though they lose their leaves in the winter, …

Ficus destruens-Destroyer Fig
by Eric in Orlando- 5 replies
- 1.1k views
Here is an uncommon Ficus species, F. destruens from the rainforests of NE Queensland, Australia. It typically starts out life as an epiphyte and becomes a large strangler type fig. The species name destruens means "destroyer". The leaves are fairly narrow and pointed, dark green on top and with a rusty pubescence on the undersides. From a distance it looks like Magnolia grandiflora 'Little Gem'. Wasn't bothered by 29F this winter. Here is our young specimen;

Dear Friends Let me welcome you all,to another intreasting thread on 'Dragon Blood Tree' which is also called as Dracaena Draco.This lovely plant came to me as gift from brother M@x,Italy.And i must say it has grown considerably big for its small pot.So i thought of giving this baby a bigger home for it to flex its muscles a bit.. And to my surprise,this plant has survived without getting rot or fungus problem inspite of experiencing heavy monsoon rains for the past 2 years..Since most of our members had hinted that this plant is more suited to be grown in drier & bit cooler regions of the world.So i had my doubts wheather this palnt will make it till this day…

Coral Reefs
by bubba- 8 replies

Southeast Florida from around Stuart through the Keys has tremendous Coral Reefs that attract many scuba folks from all over.Not long ago,there was a great deal of concern about the bleaching of a number of Coral Reefs and that was attributable initially to rising water temperatures. I have not read much about this in a number of years.The only recent developement that I am aware of is the new variety of Staghorn Coral that has suddenly appeared in numerous locations in the Keys and Palm Beach County.There are numerous efforts to support this new Coral because of the variety of different tropical fish it attracts. Does the West coast of the State of Florida in the Gulf…

Sophora secundiflora

I got this plant about this time last year and planted it out immediately. I know this plant has a reputation for being drought tolerant but this was that way from the get-go. Anyway, this is the 'Silver Peso' form. It rained all night so the leaves are still wet and the green shows through but normally it is silvery grey because of all the fine white hairs on the leaves. This plant got fairly battered a few weeks ago with all the high winds but it still kept its little buds fine. There are about 10 or so clusters of buds on this 30-inch plant. It is supposed to be slow growing and eventually becomes a 12-18 foot tree.
