I just got his Tillandsia. THe whole thing is just about the size of a softball. The vendor didn't have the name but said it was a rare "new to the Philippines" variety which is why it's pricier than the other varieties. It wasn't really that expensive but is it really a rare variety or was that just a sales pitch?? I'me not that famillar with Tillandsias

Two strange native plants

Sorry, maybe a little off topic, but here it has more visibility (please remove to´´ tropical looking plants´´ if necessary) Last holyday I went to my cousins farm in Tibagi county.. He has some agriculture on better soils and zebu cows on +- 100 hectares of somewhat poor soils with planted pastures. There is also a little remnant (+- 5 hectares) near the river where the original campo and campos-cerrados vegetation is still alive. I´m always amazed about the richness of species in the campos and cerrados, from orchids to cactus, bromeliads, lilies, allkind of grasses,palms,mirtaceas...Walking through this campos-cerrados I saw the usual plants but also two strange species loo…

I just picked this baby up from Lowes today. It is magnificent. A nice sized plant and caudex for only $24.00. Now, I'm wondering if this cycad was labeled correctly. The jagged edges looks like a Dioon rzedowskii or Encephalartos arenarius .

I made my twice-a-decade jaunt up to Ojai over the weekend, visiting Australian Native Plants nursery (www.australianplants.com). They are one of the top, if not the top, grower of Australian and South African proteaceae in Southern California. I have a list of plants I wanted, and cross-checked that against their availability, and went up with a long list of plants that I thought would fit in the back of my VW hatchback. Thankfully, most of the plants were 1 gallon plants, which are smaller, cheaper, and tend to acclimate better. In the end, I got over two dozen plants, mostly Leucospermum, Hakea, Banksia, Isopogon, Grevillea. As I was on my way out from the r…

Agave and Aloe IDs

For the first time this year I was able to drop by ritzy Cape Harbour to have a look at how its landscape survived our awful winter. Overall, the palms looked pretty good but I saw some empty spaces where the Veitchia joannis palms had been. I suspect many of them croaked, just like my V.j. Makes me glad I harvested a passel of seeds last year. The Satakentias had minor leaf burn, as did the Acromia crispa. The Acromias had dropped some of their seeds but I don't know if they will be viable or victims of the longterm lows. But the understory plants really took a hit. The lush garden floors had big gaps onece filled by heliconias and aroids. Some of the bromeliads looke…

Satsuma Mandarin orange advice needed
by NBTX11- 6 replies
- 1.1k views
Hey guys, need advice on my satsuma trees. I have 2 trees in ground that are about maybe 3 ft tall at most. Last year I got 10-15 oranges off each tree. Well, we just had the coldest winter in over 20 years. Got down to at least 16F, possibly colder They completely defoliated. I thought they were dead, all the branches appear brown, with no life in them. Anyway, I went out there today to look at them, and guess what! They are growing new growth from the base of the trunks. Kind of like suckers shooting out of the base of the tree. Question, will these suckers grow into a new tree. They are growing right from the base of tree about an inch or two off the ground. All of the…

Groundcovers
by MattyB- 21 replies

I'm going to be getting into an area where I want to use some ground cover. I don't know much about them. I'm contemplating using an agressive spreader like an ivy to hold a hillside and cover a lot of ground. I've read that Persian Ivy, Hedera colchica is less of a water hog and can tolerate full sun well. That sounds nice to me. Can you guys show some pics of your ground covers and give some info on how they perform for you? Thanks. I hope Joe Palma responds with some pics of his Red Apple ice plant. It's very nice. Thanks all. -Matt

For those who don't know, the University of Miami's arboretum, a small but very diverse collection of plants, is scheduled to lose nearly a quarter of its plants due to the City of Coral Gables plans to put a new road through the exhibit. I just received this letter from Carol Horvitz at U of M today. It sounds like they could really use an experienced arborist to evaluate trees that are to be root-pruned on April 1, less than a week away. (This letter is being copied as is. I have no vested interest involving U of M, the City of Coral Gables, or any contractors involved in doing the work. I share only with regards to the trees that cannot speak for themselves.) …
