What to do with all these volunteers. They’re everywhere, and I hate killing them. Even under the house.

The palms will be put to the test here soon. I hate seeing temps this low and worrying about palms. I don’t protect palms because they need to take a winter head on. Only the strong survive but seriously here comes the burnt foliage.

I've got 2 relatively small palms. Both under 5 feet that are showing blooms for the first time. One is supposed to be S. birmingham and one a S. brazoriensis. I thought they didn't bloom till much bigger? Are they some form of minor instead? birmingham??? 3-4' tall brazoriensis??? 5' tall large fronds

Chamaerops Problem

Any ideas on what the ailment might be? Interior spears have a fair amount of yellow...one of the fronds that did open up is quite small and blotchy green and yellow...otherwise, the fronds exposed to the winter look great...I sprayed some copper fungicide this evening...tried giving the inner most spear a pull but the palm threatened to rip my hand to shreds...any experience with this specific malady??

Sabal Palmetto Siting

Hey Palmtalk! What do you think about this spot for my potted Sabal palmetto to be planted come spring time? This location is south facing up against my house. Full sun all year round. It can get pretty hot in this spot, over 100F many days in the soil and rocks. My grasses have gotten burnt here. Will this fry the palmetto’s roots? The rocks radiate heat in the summer and winter. The soil beneath is sandy, typical of pine forests. Full protection from wind as well as overhead protection from frost. I’m willing to protect it during extreme cold snaps.

Should I get rid of these millipedes/centipedes?

Hello guys, So I took some soil we had left in our garage and added it to a few palms (they lost some soil during transportation). And only then I noticed the soil had these: What do I do now? Should I get rid of them? I'm not sure if these are millipedes or centipedes. I read that centipedes are not harmful.

I'm sure this may be a controversial topic but I would love to hear your thoughts, but more so than thoughts, experiences. I've heard for years spear pulls on Sabals are immediately a sign of death, don't bother. I've had spear pulls happen and I then pull that palm, throw it in a pot, and forgot about it for a while. Low and behold, they grow a new spear surprising me... This isn't 100% rule of thumb, but I don't like to give up on palms while I have the room. It' low effort for me, so why not. What are your experiences.. Let's hear them.. controversial, or not!

I was tree shopping today and came across these at a local landscape center. They were labeled Chinese Fan and the owner told me the same but they definitely don't look like Chinensis to me. Saribus maybe? They were all pretty stretched out and top heavy and he was having a hard time keeping them upright. If they're Saribus I might consider one to help fill the empty fence line left behind by my frozen oleander. They're potted now but they were definitely field dug and he just stick them in pots.

Date Crop Outside the Sonoran Desert
by ahosey01- 1 follower

I am starting this thread out of a curious thought that came from a discussion in the climate forum. I am wondering if there are any commercially viable date growers in California or other areas, outside of the normal Sonoran Desert range. Typically, commercial date crops are harvested in four places in the United States: In the Hyder Valley in eastern Yuma County, AZ In the Bard Valley around Yuma In the Imperial Valley in southeastern California In the Coachella Valley (the big one) in eastern riverside county. Most likely, dates would also grow just fine in the Colorado River valley just south of Bullhead City, and in the Palo Verd…

Oregon Coast Palm Experiement

Just writing out some of my thoughts. I noticed that Lincoln City, Pacific City and parts of Seaside fall under 9A designation. Would it be feasible to guerilla plant a few experimental palms around those areas to confirm any 9A long term viability? I know by looking at some of the Cordyline australis's (australii? australisies?) in those parts that they seem to grow large, full sized trunks indicating some hope... Just curious if anyone else has had this thought and what plants you would like to recommend? (In other words, can we somewhat replicate Brookings OR as far north as seaside?)

Advice for Med Fan planting
by earthworm73- 2 replies
We are supposed to get 80F (26C) at my house tomorrow and thought it was time to put both of my Med fan palms into ground since they both are very root bound 5g. i will be putting one in a raised bed. That bed is about 20 inches deep and when I filled it with soil a couple years ago I used a 3-way of compost, sand, topsoil. It appears to be well draining and though all of the rain storms during the rainy season there never has been any standing water. I usually add compost and used coffee grounds in spring. Should I add sand to the planting hole when I put in the chamaerops in the raised bed for even more approved drainage? The other area the var. argentea will go an…

A true safe bet for zone 7 palm growers?
by Subtropical LIS- 13 replies

I was taking pictures of my palmetto a few days ago and also snaped a pic of my needle palm. This palm has been in the ground for more than 5 years here on the Connecticut coast of Long Island Sound and is flawless. It grows like crazy, and after the 2nd winter, very few of the fronds ever show cold damage (maybe a few tips that turn brown) and puts out 5 to 7 fronds a season. It has taken 4 F (my coldest temp in 6 years) like a champ. My guess after half a decade is that for those in zone 7 Needle palm is a pretty safe bet. My only complaint is that when we get snow on occasion here on the coast (normally wet and heavy) some of the fronds get a little beat up. …

- Can a mule palm live well in partial shade? Sun from 1:00 p.m. - Does this palm tree need much more water, than for example a W. filifera? - Does the soil pH, type of soil, affect yellowing of the leaves? In my area, about 6.5 ph - Does a palm mule over 2 meters (total height) withstand low temperatures outside? Thanks!
