Hey Gang :), I have Windmill Palm seeds that have sprouted, and are doing good. Half of them haven't , and 5 of them have already starting to rot. Despite my efforts I think it might be time to throw the seeds out in the compost :(, The photos are the seeds that haven't even begun to germinate and the other one obviously have :P, They ones that haven't germinated still are hard as rocks and sink like stones when put in water...are they dead or what? I started them around mid January.. Thanks a lot

Me and the family are heading to Orlando on the Oct 25th. We’re going to stay that night in St. Augustine. We're staying 5 miles from Moultrie Palms. Was curious if anyone from here been there. Read great things about them. We won't have much space but would love to get a couple seedlings. Thanks for any info.

Should I cut these yellowing fronds now or let them be to let the palm use them during winter? Thanks in advance.

Which of these two Washingtonias has more filifera in it?

Some background story: The last two winters were probably 10a (haven't checked the thermometer this year, but this winter most certainly was even milder than the previous one: -1.0°C/30.2°F). Therefore I even thought about planting much more marginal palms like for example Dypsis robusta. But after listening to some horror stories from a local who has witnessed olive trees dying back in the winter of 1985 and another person living nearby who claimed to have measured -8 °C with his car thermometer in early 2018 (local meteo sites say -3°C, some -5°C) I got disillusioned. Back to the question: The two palms depicted are Washingtonia "robusta" raised from rps seeds. But…

T. fortunei from seeds question.

Hi I am in a zone 7 (Atlanta-GA). I have acquired fresh T. fortunei seeds. I am going to plant 25 seeds in 2 large bins (made to grow vegetables) (Total 50 seeds). I was going once they reach decent seedling size to plant a batch in my yard and keep the other batch in my garage over winter to plant in the spring. I keep plants in my garage over winter every year and they do fine so I figure the seedlings should be fine too. Now for the batch that I am going to plant, I am a little nervous as they should be ready by the fall but by the time winter comes they might not have developed enough roots in the ground to survive. Need your thought about that if yo…

Thanks to @ZPalms we've exchanged seeds. The seeds he forwarded arrived today. They are Washingtonia filibusta and Sabal palmetto from his post on them in Fayetteville, NC. They're the one's featured on a lot that is up for sale and maybe in danger of being removed / destroyed when development begins. I sent him some, fresh off the tree Trachycarpus fortunei . Hopefully they arrive soon Dylan.

Where to buy a 2-4ft CT Dactylifera

I’ve been searching the better part of 6 months and can’t find them anywhere. I know they aren’t truly cold hardy but a local meteorologist in the Dallas area has one and I wanted to give one a shot. Any ideas? I would even take 4-6ft overall with no trunk if I could find them.

Watering mid fall into winter.

Had some nice growth on a Trachy f. planted the second week of March this year. It’s planted in a part of my yard that gets both long direct sunlight during the summer (nearly 8 hours total, from early morning to mid afternoon), and the first sunlight in the morning during the winter (about 5 hours total, from early morning to about 1:30 PM or so). From the start, it put up new growth quickly: at the peak of summer, it would grow a new frond to completion roughly every week and a half or two weeks. Obviously, things are slowing down now, but it is still pushing out some new growth. My question is: How much watering do I need to do now and into winter? Do I …

My Butia odorata is taking over the walkway . A picture from inside the house . Pretty big Minor volunteer . It's an NC ecotype . Sabal Louisiana . Lots of seed ripening . My largest Needle Palm . It's about 7-8 feet to the tip of the highest frond . This Citrumelo will look like this throughout Christmas and they start falling off in early January . I get more people asking about this tree . I've gotten to where I don't answer the door anymore when I think someone is inquiring about it . Will

Some recoveries some failures, too many to mention. But here are some pictures. Austin had 25 earlier this month. A fair amount of damage. 10 maybe 12F last February. Very warm spot south of the Skyline of Austin. I have grown to love their hardy cycad collection.

Chamaedorea microspadix
by ahosey01- 4 replies

I am looking for a palm along an east facing wall in the lowest, coldest part of my yard (9a). It is under filtered light from a mesquite tree for the first 4-5 hours of the day, direct sun for maybe 30-40 mins, and shade the rest of the day. This is the area I am referring to: Was thinking Chamaedorea microspadix. Any experience with these in dry climates? I’ll water it plenty. If that doesn’t work, any other suggestions? Must be cold hardy, shade tolerant and not get super tall.

7B-8A Chammy cerifera

I say 7B-8A zone because even though my 30 year average lowest winter lows average a little above 12F , I still get enough 7B winters to where I feel like 7B-8A is more indicative of my area than saying 8A . Officially I'm 7B . This has been in the ground for 7 years and I'm pretty pleased with it . It's to the right of the Agave ( I think that Agave is going to flower one of these years soon ) . Cerifera all by itself .

Palms planted in March vs May (Z6)
by ColumbusPalm- 11 replies

Just wanted to throw out some observations for the colder climate folks. I originally asked when to plant my 3&7g Sabal minor and 7g Needle palm back in March and ended up planting all 4 then. They are all growing quite well now and I wouldn’t be surprised to see 3 new fronds from each (except the 3 gallon minor) this season. They’ve all pushed out 1 and the 7g are all starting to flower. Seems it has helped them establish quicker even though they saw some 20F nights after planting. I planted a Sabal Louisiana in May and it has done nothing. Wondering if July/August will treat it better but I’m surprised. All of my potted palms from May are also going real…

One of my favorite butia in town. The slim trunk and open crown really made it look tropical imho. Sadly, it had not pushed out a spear by the end of july, and was removed. Another victim of the harsh winter event.

Sabal 'blackburniana' update/growth

To anyone interested, my original thread is located HERE. I thought I would give a separate update on how this palm obtained from Phil at Jungle Music has performed here in its first ~1.5years. Last year we had a pretty rough blast (compared to the norm) as did most of the country. Our low was 15F and 36 hours below freezing. Since this was the first winter in the ground I threw a layer or two of cheap (green) frost cloth over it with no added heat. There were some strange discoloration to the frond leaf tips but nothing that lasted for any length of time. Anyway, here is an update of it in the ground now for almost a year and a half. On March…

Palms in Norfolk Virginia

Sorry no photos. I recently spent 4 days in Norfolk, Virginia and saw several large palms. I was quite surprised. I thought they were contained primarily to Virginia Beach, but this was Norfolk, not VB, and it was also away from the coast a couple miles. I saw several large trachycarpus that were quite tall, maybe 15 or 20 feet tall that had healthy looking crowns, well inland. Near the Beach in Norfolk, I saw Sabals and some type of feather palm. It was quite far away, so I couldn't tell for sure, but the crown sure looked like a phoenix. Maybe it was a Butia, it was quite far away, but the fronds were not curved like a Butia and from a distance it appeared to be …
