Phoenix Theophrasti seedlings
by JeskiM- 2 replies

I sowed (gang planted) ~ 20-25 Phoenix Theophrasti seeds into a single 5 gallon pot several weeks ago. Looks like I have ~75% germination attm, My question is: How long should I plan to keep them in this community pot till I separate them ? My thinking is to leave them in this pot for the 1st year and transplant into individual pots in early spring next year. What do y'all think ? -Matt

Phoenix x (palm ID)
by Estlander- 3 replies

Anyone know what cross this might be? It’s obviously Phoenix of some kind. What throws me off is the thickness of the trunks. It’s a suckering one so I’m thinking Phoenix Reclinata, but leaning heavily towards Canariensis. Normally Phoenix Reclinata crosses have thinner trunks. It’s in Destin (coastal FL panhandle).

photos: suckering Canary Island Date Palm! 1 2

Attached are two photos of a suckering Canary Island Date Palm which I drove past recently in the village of Madison, northern Florida, just a few km from Georgia. It is obviously very old because the house appears to be at least 100 years old. This tree must be a hybrid with phoenix reclinata for it to be suckering like this, but I don't see any reclinata in it. Do you? I have a few more photos of this tree coming in a moment.

Just picked this guy up from Xlb palms. My seedlings and others I have will take years to get this size so I thought I’d bridge the gap. Might even plant this one in the ground next spring

Passion flower vines are jumping into high gear- looking forward to some outer-space flowers from these! Good to see this tree Opuntia flowering here- to bad I had to cut it in half. <a href="http://s297.photobucket.com/user/orbea641/media/Iowa%202014/100_9357_zps0b4904ff.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm220/orbea641/Iowa%202014/100_9357_zps0b4904ff.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 100_9357_zps0b4904ff.jpg"/></a>

Pictures of my Trachy...looking healthy or not?
by jfrye01@live.com- 6 replies

Here's some pictures of my Windmill...I've been putting it outside when weather permits, bringing it in when temperatures drop below freezing, as I don't want the roots to freeze in the pot. Today, I kept it inside, as it was very cold until about an hour ago. I am planning to plant this little palm in the ground in mid-April...anybody with Trachy experience, does mine look healthy, overwatered, underwatered, or other? Thanks:)

Pictures of Trachycarpus ‘Bulgaria’
by JDH23- 1 follower

Hello all, Ive recently fell down the rabbit hole of exploring/learning about Trachycarpus ‘Bulgaria’. From what I’ve looked into, there are allegedly 4 original palms that were planted at the history museum in the city of Plovdiv. Out of curiosity I tried to see what the palms look like, however, for the life of me I cannot find a picture of any of the palms at the museum. I’ve seen pictures/videos of presumably Trachycarpus ‘Bulgaria’ palms planted in areas of Bulgaria, but I have not seen a picture of the original 4 plants at the museum. Additionally, I’ve seen people claim to have seen these 4 plants both in person and in photos, so this suggests to me there are …

Recently saw a fairly tall palmetto for piedmont standards while fishing Hyco Lake in NC (about 75 miles NW of Raleigh) There was a smaller one growing nearby I saw tons of trachys around this lake but these were the only two sabals I spotted

A few pics of my front yard, focusing on a couple palms (Butia capitata, Trachycarpus fortunei), + large yuccas, large agaves. The agaves are about as tall as I am, the yuccas mostly taller lol. The front garden view shows trunks of tall T. fortunei and a large Yucca schottii in background, with blue Agave parryi in front, and A. salmiana var. ferox behind (large, dark green).

Pindo Palm for Zone 7
by Cosmo- 11 replies

So I have one more slot in my pool landscape for a specimen planting. I have narrowed my choices to either a multi head Thompson yucca or a Pindo palm. Both are similiarly priced. I know the yucca will laugh at our winters but what about the Pindo. Yeah, verily I may live in zone 7 according to the USDA charts but we know that is always just a good story. As a lazy palm grower would I be better going with the yucca. There is so much conflicting info about hardiness I thought I would get some real world experience and expert opinions. Thanks

Pindo Palm Frond Issues/Disease - Any Ideas?
by Skimfizz- 2 replies
- 1.8k views
I've got a 6 year old Pindo in my front yard with frond discoloration and premature drying (I think....compared to my neighbors that are all green). All the plants in the same bed under the Palm are doing fine. The Palm is even fruiting. It's in full Sun in Charleston, SC area. I feed it Espoma about 3 times a year. I water only when we don't get an inch or so a week. Can you take a look at the pictures and tell if I have a bacterial/viral issue, or is it something more related to things I can be doing better to manage it ? Thanks!

Pindo Palm growth rate?

Hello guys, How long do you think it will take the Pindo Palm on the left to reach the size of the Pindo Palm on the right? The left one I ordered from Home Depot, it came from Brighter Blooms. HomeDepot listed it as 3 gallon pot and it came in a 2 gallon pot and looks a little smaller than on their generic picture (this this the issue with HomeDepot, they give great prices, you can find great deals there, but no guarantees on what you'll get; usually I got good plants though). It costed $65. I wonder if it it's too much for this size and if I should return it and reorder somewhere else. The right one is 7G from FastGrowingTrees.

Pindo Palm shedding it's boots
by Ponds & Palms- 12 replies

My brother in law has a pindo palm he got about 3 years ago from a local dealer in North Carolina so we don't know how old the palm is. We live in zone 7b and for the most part the tree has been fine. He wraps the trunk and bottom fronds in burlap in the winter to keep it warm and with a pretty mild winter this past year all the fronds were still green unwrapping it ! Now it appears that the bottom boots are falling off (see pictures) the trunk exposed is rock hard so it doesn't seem rotten, so what is going on? There are no signs of bugs and the center spear has put out about 4 new fronds this summer.

Pindo palm success in zone 7b?

I live in Raleigh NC, in zone 7b but just over the line from 8a. In fact, some of our region is in 8a. I only see small pindo palms here, most likely planted in the last few years. So I'm wondering if anyone has had any success growing in a pindo in a similar zone on a longer term basis? I've read online that some people have been growing them around here for years but I've yet to see any large specimens. I've also read that Butia eriospatha (Wooly Jelly Palm) is the hardiest of the butias. But I can't seem to find those anywhere. Only butia capitata.

Pindo Palm. Yellow growth

This pindo palm is about 6-8 months old. It is in a pot and did great over the summer and fall. I heat tape surrounding the pot and strewn through the fronds as well as burlap protection. The last 6 weeks I noticed yellow droopy growth. We we live in Vancouver BC and only got down to -4 over night a few times so I don’t think cold has anything to do with it. Any thoughts ? ryan

Pindo questions:)

Alright, going out on a limb (frond?) here:) I am planning on planting two pindos in my yard this spring, despite being told it can't be done in zone 6b...However, for winter, I do plan to construct a small, temporary, sturdy greenhouse from PVC pipe and plastic and place lights on a thermocube inside. I plan to do this for all my palms, even the Trachy and S. Minors...Anyway, I was wondering, where can one buy a pindo palm? I'm wanting one with a small amount of trunk. Also, how many years do they take to fruit? How tall are they usually before they begin fruiting? I can drive to Dallas if need be. I've heard others mention the Dallas Farmer's Market, but I was wonderin…

Does anyone know if many pindo palms survived after the big freeze in Dallas or Austin? I'm in Raleigh and I planted one in my yard a few months ago. We don't typically get as cold as it got in both of those locations so my thought is that if pindos survived that, mine should do ok. And I do expect to have to protect it a few times a year.

Our pineapple pine was transplanted last July when new landscaping was put in and now its showing some funky brown stuff on it and leaves are turning brown. Is it dying? or insect infested? What should we do?

On a few of my pinnate palms this year I have noticed that when the spear is pushing that the individual leaflets aren't opening/unfolding creating a droopy looking frond that is rather flaccid looking as it pushes out. I have seen this on a butia, mule and queen. Any thoughts on the cause?
